What are people doing ? Any plans ? Just dawned on me I may need somewhere to stay overnight !

If all goes to plan, i won't be staying long enough to need somewhere to stay...

There are tons of Alan Partridge style travel taverns popping up all over the city centre (Corbi trouser press optional), and they're usually pretty cheap. There's a Premier Lodge next to the G-Mex/Midland Hotel - telephone number is 0870 7001476. Also, the lovely people at Manchester tourist information run a service where you tell them your requirements and they'll find something for you, usually at a cheaper than normal rate.
