Observation about Technique

I appreciate everyone's posts for my last topic by the way. Anyways, you know what I noticed....All the dance songs on the album are fantastic, amongst their best work, but their more traditionally structured songs like All the Way, Love Less, Guilty Partner, and Run are for the most part, kind of sub par. I enjoy Run, but they ripped the guitar from John fuckin Denver! And All The Way rips off a Cure song from about a year before they made technique! Isn't it odd that they were so fresh and innovative with their dance music on this album, but blatently unoriginal with their rock music on the same album? HMMMMM????

I don't think New Order plagiarised John Freakin'Denver. I do, however, think that John Denver was an idiot, though. PS: Technique is one of my favourite New Order albums, though.

I still prefer the guitar-based stuff, but the dancier stuff has grown on me too... I think sometimes the genius of NO's guitar-based stuff is that it is simple, perfect POP, not clever or ground-breaking, but brilliant nonetheless...

Well well well, what a can of worms we have here. All The Way is a "direct nod to" Just Like Heaven simply because In Between Days was a "direct nod to" Dreams Never End. You may consider listening to that before building a theory that they are guitar plagiarists!

As for the John Denver thing, that is bollocks. Six notes, that's all it is. Quite ironic that he never got to spend the filthy lucre he took from them. I guess nobody else will write a song about Leaving On A Jet Plane, just in case!

c'mon the central element of Run is a complete rip off of Leavin on a jet plane. Far too much of a coincedence

Isn't John Denver an American? America, land where everybody sues everybody... I agree with you...the John Denver thing is bollocks, and I think most New Order fans, and even people who aren't that familiar with New Order will listen to it and say, "That doesn't sound like John Denver."

of course Run doesnt sound like John Denver.

I've only heard leaving on a jet plane in midi format, and the notes are the same as some guitar & voice parts in Run.

not similar...the same.

The only bit is surely the guitar riff before the verse?

I'll mail the midi Tim.

the notes to 'I dont know what day it is, or who I'm talking to' and 'what the hell is happening' are in it.

I listened to leaving on a Jetplane this weekend... If it sounds like Run then I'm the Prince of Persia!

You don't think that the MIDI may have been done either badly or by someone having a bit of a laugh?

Exactly. Its virtually the same lyrical melody. Blatant rip off. Cant hear the similarity between All The Way and Just Like Heaven though.

if anything, those few notes in run demonstrate what an underrated musician john denver actually was. :thumb:

I love Technique, nonetheless.

The guitar songs are excellent on Technique; the dance songs are a major recovery after the perfidious trilogy* of "Subculture", "Shellshock", and "State of the Nation" (which were already buffered, thank heavens, with BLT, True Faith, and TBTHOG, but more was still needed in my retrospective estimation). I actually heard the first 30 seconds of "Leaving On A Jet Plane" last night, but the kid at work playing it quickly switched to some rap on his iPod so as not to offend his homies who had come into the store. "Run" definitely resembles the track, but you could say the same of the Velvet Underground resembling girl group and doo-wop songs in some instances. It's a shame Denver was so uptight about the track-you'd think sharing credit was enough, but denying production of the single, when he'd be making more money? Kind of self-denying and righteous all at once.

Anyway, back to Technique briefly. I deliberately put off getting this album because I heard "it was the big dance album", and I wasn't a big fan of "Fine Time" or "Round & Round" when I first watched the videos. But when I finally picked up Technique last May or June, I fell in love instantly. That had never happened with a NO album before (although I had a pretty intense affinity for Brotherhood for the first two months I had owned it). I love all the tracks, and have very few qualms with anything on the record. Two masterpieces: Closer and Technique.

*This is a really hyperbolic statement.

Whether it be guitar oriented, dance, or some combination of the two, I've said time and time again the reason New Order is only as popular as they are is because of frequent bad choices for singles. Technique is the worst offender of them all in my view.

are there any other choices for singles in NO's catalogue besides guitar-oriented, 'dance' (by which i assume you mean electronic), or a combination of the two? nose flute?

Love the idea of instantly falling in love with something after sixteen years... It's weird, cos for me Technique has never been a really 'dancey' album, I suppose FT and R&R are actually my least favourite tracks on there, so for me it's always been more about Loveless, ATW, Run and DA...

Simply the best thing NO have done. Enough said.

I'm 20! You made a similar comment when I asked about the original Ceremony sans Gillian.

I think of Technique as an album that is half dance, half guitar. The dance songs are excellent, although none of them really seemed to make much of a hit. The guitar tracks, like Dream Attack and Vanishing Point, are also excellent - far better than most of the stuff on Brotherhood - but "Run" and "Loveless" are pretty weak, compared to the rest of the album.

Vanishing Point a guitar track?

Have to say I think Love Less is great and Run is fantastic.

Thing is I don't consider Technique 'dance' or guitar oriented because there are elements of both in pretty much all the songs. Great album.
