What kind of instrument is this that Bernard plays (see photo)... i forgot what it's called. I'm a true fan really ;) I would love to buy one.

A melodica. Either a Hohner Soprano or a Hohner Alto according to JD Central

I can learn this, as I played a bit of keyboard. I always wanted to play bass or guitar but could never get the hang of it for some reason.

Our high school music department had one which I used to jam on. My only regret is not pinching the damn thing when I left!! I think it was a Soprano model but was a different coulour to Ian/Barney's old one.

I have an instrument that is similar, but has a piano keyboard. Like the melodica, you blow into it to strike notes. I thought it's called a pianomonica, but I'm not sure. BTW, the brand is Yamaha. I wish that I could post a picture of it, but it looks like I couldn't find my USB port to transfer the photo.

There's a couple listed on Ebay as we speak in the States, about $6-$7 each at the moment(both Soprano models)

I have several. Which one to use depends largely on the sound you want. Soprano contains higher notes than the Alto (as per the singing voice). The newer Hohner Piano 25 and 27 contain a wider range and more piano-like keys, and they are the ones that Bernard uses now.

Soprano is green, Alto red, and the Student model is Grey.

Yeah, we used to ahve a red one at out primary school. Never really paid any attention to it to be honest. Meh well, too late now.

have seen loads of bands using these now, but NO were the first. the green ones have changed over the years a bit mind, compare the ones used by barney in your orignal post with the ones by the arcade fire & santa dog below

Hibster, my instrument in question is what Santa Dog uses. I don't use the mouth piece usually; instead I use the tube that is plugged on the melodica's side.
