Oh it's the last time (this will be asked, I hope)

OK, as far as I have read on this board, I have not been able to find a thorough explanation of the differences between Temptation 7" and the 12". Are they the same recording, the former being an edit? Or are they different versions? If so, what's different about the 12", aside from the length and fade in with no fade out? Are the vocals better? Bass line more developed? Sequencer a little different, tonally?

Please spare me the criticism of not owning the track yet, because Retro just doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment.

there are some distinct differences, even some of the lyrics differ, but i don't feel up to a full explanation now. i'm going back to bed.

besides some of the lyrics being different, barney's voice is lower on the 7" and it sounds a bit like it was produced in someone's bedroom. i prefer the 7", myself.

in my above post i was thinking of ceremony, not temptation.

anyway, i just gave them both a listen and here's my comparison: the 12" of temptation is a good 3 minutes longer than the 7". on the 7" barney sings some of the lyrics faster, some of the lyrics are different, and the intro is quite different with the 12" starting off with the 'oh, you've got green eyes...' lyrics, while the 7" has a synth intro.

The original 12" and the 7" always sounded like two completely different recordings to me.

Definitely - picked up a replacement copy for my battered and abused original fairly recently for about 3 or 4 quid... It often appears on Ebay as EGG rather than Factus 8 so have a look around...

Agreed. I had to ebay another one because my original was busted from years of continual (ab)use. Bad needles, bad handling, poor record. I picked mine up for about 3$, not including the 3.50$ shipping. Not horrible considering what my local record shop was asking for it(18$). It can be found, and one week in Jaurary I found about 9 of them alone on auction for prices ranging 99 cents up to 5$ US.

That's because they are.

The 7" has a cold start and fades out, whereas the 12" fades in and has a cold stop. The idea is that you can listen to the two back-to-back to experience the 'full' Temptation (or so the theory goes).

They certainly sound like they were recorded at different sessions. The 7" is way more controlled and tight, including Barney's vocals, whereas the 12" is much looser. It alwys sounded to me as if the 7" was an earlier recording but there's no proof to back that up.

The vocal performance usually works as a good indicator. His pitch wavers on the 7".
