I want to replace my old and battered CD copy of Substance. Does anyone have catalogue numbers of the remastered editions?
And what improvements were made?

substance has not been remastered. as far as i know nothing has been remastered. you may want to check out the new singles compilation. check the discography on this site for further information.
Got the Singles album.
I had heard that when London Records re-released substance, they had cleaned up the cds. They boosted up the sound.
Perhaps they were not remastered but perhaps they were cleaned up?
I think I've been getting some incorrect information from someone who obviously dosen't know better (a friend of mine). Looks like Substance has never been remastered.

Almost everything on it is available in a remastered version except:
Temptation 87 Perfect Kiss (Extended) Subculture (12 Inch, but 7inch on Singles) State Of The Nation (12 Inch)
And everything on the second disc except IALP, Procession, Cries & Whispers and Lonesome Tonight.
The mastering on the London Records (or CentreDate I think mine is) Substance is pretty crap. Suffers from a bad case of low volume levels on all the songs and it's clear they have potential to sound alot better with a bit of proper effort using the original master tapes; they sound sort of "flat" as they are. Crying out for a remaster.

As you say, thanks to Retro, International etc. you can mostly compile a remastered Substance disc 1 sourcing tracks from those compilations (minus Perfect Kiss, Sub-culture + State of the Nation I think) You can't really do the same with the second Substance disc but again, some of those tracks can be found remastered on Retro.
A remastered Temptation 87 is available on the International 5 track EU bonus disc. Definitely a much better (and louder) mastering than the one on Substance... sounds great there! 
Louder isn't always better ! Loudness means compression, and overcompression means sucking the life out of music. "Singles" is already overcompressed to these ears...
does anyone know if the version on DAT was better quality than the CD?
i think DAT'S are sampled at a higher rate than the CD....but then again it might not be that noticeable..

incrasing the sampling rate shouldn't really improve things if the original source is the same. in other words, you can't get something that isn't there to begin with.
Expanding on the original question, has any of NO's discography been remastered? Cause I mean I think their back catalogue could certainly benefit from it.

the original master tapes are probably a much higher quality than DAT's/CD's...
when you resample them, you lose a lot more at 44.1 for cd's, than you do at 48 for dat's...
so thats why i think there's still a difference..
