Sooner Than You Think

Such an overlooked great tune! So beautiful and sad. I love how it alternates between jangly pop and dancefloor style. I love this song dearly, and it is maybe my favorite New Order song, in the Top 5 for sure. Anyone with me on this Low Life gem?

One of my favorites as well,I think its the best thing off of low life. Perfect kiss aside cause of the edit. Sounds like a track that could have been put on techique.

It used to be a stonewall oldmonkey Top 5 entry, but recently it has dipped a bit to the Top 10 instead. Still quality though.

Got to agree with El Jarvo on this, for me STYT the point at which Low-Life goes downhill and along with Subculture the reason Low-Life isn't the most fantastic album in the world ever, merely a great album... It's always struck me as being a weak track, a bit flimsy, dunno why, and listening to it recently, well, it sounds a bit dated... But that's just me... I mean I like WIM!

BTW shouldn't this really be in the Song Review Forum?

Paradoxically again, I actually think this is the lull before Low-Life really takes off again. Think Subculture then Face Up is a mind-blowing combination to close any album.

True, Face Up is a stonking ending, I suppose I've never liked Subculture that much, so after such a strong side 1 - probably the best they've ever released, (own LL on vinyl and cassette, so the sides are important, especially since the cassette also have TPK 12" at the end of side 1), only really loving 2 of the 4 on side 2 is a bit of a let down - probably affects the way I view STYT and SC... It's still my fave NO album, followed closely by PC&L - which also suffer a little from 'side2itis' - really strong first 4 songs, then a couple of weaker ones on side 2 (Ultraviolence, Ecstasy)...

I agree with Beach Boy-this is good enough to be on Technique, or at least very close.

oh aye top tune styt,love the toy piano bit at the begining and they did a good rendition of this on rock around the clock. as for the other tracks mentioned ive actually gone off subculture it sounds very weak and disjointed these days,and although i like face up i think the album version isnt a patch on the live versions but you get that a lot with any band and any song.

I think Subculture sounds like it should be on Technique more than Sooner Than You Think. I was actually singing both songs at work today, and the girl sitting next me asked me "what is you singin'?" as if she was wierded out by the lyrics to Subculture. I think Subculture is stronger than the merely decent Face Up. By the way what is this Peter Saville Show Soundtrack thing?

The Peter Saville Soundtrack is a 30 minute instrumental the band (although apparently mainly Steve and Hooky) released to play during the Saville exhibition from a few years back. It's hard to find on record but you can find cd-rw copies out there.

I love STYT and think its a bit of a hidden gem. Its got some great instrumentation on it. The intro is one of No's best and the ending is pretty cool too. However, it sounds like its still a demo to me and with a bit of more production could have been brilliant. (They could have beefed the chorus up a bit).

For me Low-Life is a great album but apart from the first 4 tracks the vocals suck big time.

Its debut at Brixton in December of 83 is really cool. Almost an improvisational complete with Gillian screw up. Lyrics never used again. Zurich was the second performance. Seems that either the taper was too close or that the drums were way too loud here. But I love that beat. Lyrics almost fully formed.

I think the chorus is great to STYT. And Face up is great too.

Brilliant song. One of the Low-Life highlights

A quality track, loved it ever since I first heard it on the "Saturday Live" thing they did back in August '84 - that's still the best version IMHO, slightly edgier than Low-Life.

An 8th of one of the finest albums ever made.
