My home-town,i remember it well; my sisters b'day and me and my mate Jacko dropped acid for the first time! Crazy gig ,people on stage,Hooky raising his bass to smack one of em'the bogs got smashed as well as the band, seats ripped-up and i've lost my voice[as well as my sanity] thank fuck they finished with "sunrise".Front page of Melody Maker i think? I remember pissing all over some poor geezers legs and seeing my mate puking over his own.Top dollar"anyone care to add...cheers for the memory.

Typical Chelsea. Don't even live in bloody London. ;)

Was up in the front row of the circle cos I had a dislocated shoulder at the time. Gig looked pretty average till Ceremony then it looked like a riot was taking place. Ni-ice.

Remember a little 'mob' of kids, all in JD t-shirts, going around picking on other little kids. And when I say kids, I do mean kids - all about 13 or 14 - cos I was only 17 meself at the time. Thought it hilarious, but bizarre to see children in JD t-shirts.

Long train journey home, and had to get up and do it all again at Brighton the next day. Still, who's complaining?

Readers might well like to know that the final song played that night was "Face Up", not "Sunrise". Both the Chelsea account (nostalgia-enhanced) and the gig guide (incorrect set) are slightly off the mark. Sunrise came before Face Up. Those who wish to argue the toss are welcome to a copy of the recording :)

I'm gonna argue the toss. I'm sure Sunrise was last. Hooky telling us we were 'Lucky bastards' because they were doing one more. Then again, it was 16 years ago. I take it you haven't got the tape in front of you, Zizou, so can't say for sure?

Not sure why this gig went down in the annals of history as such a bad outing? This always gets written off as one of their worst outings ever.

Incidentally, they were gonna play Rock The Shack and Blue Monday as the encore for this one, but then heard a lone Scottish accent in the crowd, so decided to fcuk off to the bar rather than pander to any upstart from the Wrong Side of the Border

I thank you ;)

No, I haven't got it in front of me, but will have by 7pm tonight, and will copy it immediately for you !

I thought it was quite good (well the first six or seven anyway, then the arsehole element in the crowd took over and spoiled it) - been to worse performances.

From the Waterrat transcription of the set......

NO: 27 MAR 86 Apollo Theatre Oxford

Bernard's very talkative in this one. He sounds dead pissed. Another good quality recording, but I can't claim to make out all the patter, but it's obvious that the crowd was adoring our Mancunian heroes (not)

Intro to Perfect Kiss

BS: "Hello B.... like any other(?). This is the Perfect Kiss" He actually says Hello, we're New Order, and this is Perfect Kiss

Intro to Everything's Gone Green

BS: "This is Everything's Gone Green"

Intro to Broken Promise

PH: "Thank you very much again." BS: "I believe this next song is on our next LP even though we

haven't recorded it yet, and it's called Broken Promise"

"If I'm right and you're FUCKING sinful..."

Intro to Lonesome Tonight

BS: "Thank you very much you're all getting into it a little bit now...

(unintelligible muttering)...some acoustic..."

Intro to Bizarre Love Triangle

BS: "Shit you fucking gumps. As Bernard Bonney(sp?) would say.

(muffled, unidentified voice) "At wo here an me"(?)

PH: "Yo"

BS: "Okay, I'm ready"

"Wisdom of a cunt will set you free"

Intro to This Time of Night

BS: "God, you're so fucking boring, understand you can tell why we haven't played here in Cambridge in six years." (transcription assisted by John Barron)

(adopts fake Midlands accent)

BS: "Y'all so wonderful ah y'all"

Intro to Shellshock

BS: "This is a very, very, very, very, very new song, it's called Shellshock, and it's our new song. A lot of people say we can't play, but some of us know better, don't we?"

(song has a synth line that doesn't appear in the release)

Intro to Ceremony

BS: "Well, what a tame audience we have. What a bunch of boring cunts here.

(probably responding to audience taunting)

BS: Boring melodic. You know you want to.

(mutters) "What's the next song" PH: "Ceremony" (cough)

PH: "Don't give a fuck [for us I see]?"

BS: "No problem, we don't care."

(mutters) "You start...fast..."

Intro to Sunrise

BS: (to stage crew) "I don't. Have you got a cord for this?"

(to taunter) "Shut up, you bastard...(bass riff starts)... "No, that was a compliment."

Intro to Face Up

BS: "(unintelligible)the connection for this flute. Few lights when I'm playing on the Casio I'm playing, not like it counts in the state tonight I'm in..."

PH: "Don't seem to be another after that, eh. Fucking A. You lucky bastards."

(bernard is badly flubbing lyrics at this point)

PH: "We might have [dodged death?] as well as that"

Didn't Hooky get hit by a pint-pot near the end? Or one just missed him?

Can't remember why the band were so arsey, but don't think the crowd got silly till Ceremony - but then New Order crowds tend to get a little 'silly' during Ceremony, so what's new?
