I took all the snippets of "The Happy One" from the Substance VHS and put them together in something resembling a song. It's not very dynamic but there's only so much one can do with 20-second bits. ;)

Nice one, doesn't sound bad at all... Still not convinced I especially like it as a track, however it's pieced together... But good job, anyway, fella!

I ask because this song is something of an enigma. There is a version put together from the 'Intermede Musical' tracks off the Palatine Lane promo (Fac303) which clocks in at about 2:30 but has very discernable transitions in the mix. Yours is very good, but there is also the supposedly 'full' version of the track which has a timing of 2:48.
I've never bothered to sit down and time the Substance VHS snippets to see what they add up to.

Just the Substance VHS bits add up to 3:30 (there are 8 parts total, longest being 1:10 over the closing credits). There isn't anything similar to the intro from when Hooky played it live so I know this is probably very different than the original demo from the Technique sessions.
My version is not just the parts linked together, I actually repeated bits and did some editing to make it longer/fuller.
Nice work, it's even better than the version on the Extracts From "Recycle" bootleg which was only 2:50 in length. THO's an inessential track really but obviously interesting for the hardcore fans and completists. I've never rated it personally, just a sort of repetitive doodle which is probably why the band wisely confined it to background clips on Substance 1989.
What's the history behind this track in terms of writing credits again? I get the feeling Steve and Gillian wrote the backing, as it's got that Other Two-ish feel, and Hooky jammed randomly on top. I don't see Barney being responsible for too much here and not just because guitars and vocals don't feature.
We do know Hooky performed it solo on that TV show while the rest of the band couldn't be bothered turning up; must've had a soft spot for it or something?!

This sounds quite good, apart from the obvious crackling, but what the hey.
Maybe somebody with the sort of talent and know-how (maybe you) could try and clean up the crackling a bit (if that's at all possible)

I'm not sure what sort of crackling you're hearing because this came from tape, not vinyl. I recorded it straight into the computer and tried to clean up some of the hiss, but there's nothing so obvious you'd notice it. At least not to me.
From memory.....(cos I watched a trilion times)....
"When they were recording their latest album in majorca[1] last spring. new Order's Manager, Robert Leo Gretton, became particularly fond of a track who's working title was "the happy one". In truly cooperative New Order style, the group sabotaged the song by recording no overdubs or vocals and not mixing it. But it MUSt be heard. It's with great pleasure that OSM now presents this performance by New Order, or at least a bit of New Order and some of their equipment....."

Classic performance that. And thanks for piecing this studio version together, good work. 
...a relative good work (I did some tries on this for myself)... ...but I'm not 100 percent satisfied with the cuts at second 116 and at second 145, it stops the flow of the tune... ...the 'Recycle' version (2:50 mins) still is the best one ever done (I even couldn't do it better yet)...

Superb stuff, I remember Hooky playing along with it at the time on "The Other Side Of Midnight"...
If memory serves me correctly, Barney was out jogging whilst Steve & Gillian had both gone to bed early! 
I remember Hooky playing with all these machines whirring behind him - must have been '89/'90?
