live recordings

not sure how well this idea will go down, especially those of you who have spent years collecting the bootlegs! but how about a live download thread where people can post live recordings they have as mp3 through yousendit.com or any other similar site? I'll admit I was primarily thinking of myself when I thought about this, but I've noticed a lot of other bands forums do this and thought it would be a good feature here, it would also be very useful for those who have difficulties in tracking down bootlegs and are unable to use torrents, what do others think?

MP3's are crap.

People start spreading them around then the quality of the bootlegs out there will suffer.

Get yourself into the Behind Closed Doors forum and post a load of rubbish. When you've got over a 100 posts to your name have a closer look at the Forums Contents page.

As long as the flacs are out there who cares if ppl want mp3's as well.

Wanna guess what the first thing I do with a flac gig is? yup, re-encode to MP3, beacuse, sorry, a mic in Digi's hat is not abbey road, and lossyness aint gonna hurt it.

I totally understand the ethos of not distributing mp3...or at least i would if I thought ppl were decoding to .wav and back to mp3, over and over and over....cos that's the only way they will "degrade", it's not yer doubledeck boombox in 1986 now lads.

Look at it this way too....if someone were to make the ENTIRE gig catalogue available as a single bittorrent.....would you want 15-20GB of mp3, or a few terrabytes of flac?

Steinberg cubase considers 320kbps mp3 a professional standard format, for finished master recordings and folks get precious about some barely audible racket taped in a gent's loo being compromised by same?

EDIT: I do keep the flac orginals in case someone precious DOES want them...I may think it's daft, but others don't.

sorry to be off-topic, but how do you re-encode flac to mp3? i've been trying to figure it out for awhile

flac -d ./*.flac && lame -b 320 ./*.wav

I'm sure it can be done in windows too, but unless you have a wave editor like wavelab or soundforge that can open flac and save mp3, you will still be doing it the same as the above, only with mouseclicks....ie using flacfrontend to decode to wav first, then to mp3.

BTW...has the yousendit link expired? I can;t get it to play ball at all. Shame, I need this show as mp3, having stuff the cdda version in a box when i moved house.
