Me too - agreed. Digital is right up there with my favorite JD song, taking almost 2nd place after "Decades"
Love the energy, love how it got its name, play it at every single gig of mine, I still can't decide which live version I have is best, but the song gives me goosebumps still.

Digital was the first song i heard after hearing LWTUA. i guess i can see where the 'poppy' is coming in. the beginning now reminds me of the beach boys...thanks!

Let me try to explain it to you.
The first song on the first release on Factory and the last song they would perform live. Perfectly appropriate. It brought the label in with a loud brashness that refused to be ignored. And it ended Ian's career not with a whisper, but a scream. he wasn't going to go out any other way.
Yes it's simple. That's the point. There's no nuances of technique to get in the way. Just a loud pulsating beat that won't quit. Kinda like Blue Monday... digital.
And then there's Ian. He sings it alternating between quiet anxiety and loud pleading desperation... day in, day out... on and off. Something that's digital is either on or off. There's no in between. It doesn't fade. Ian is singing of a relationship that has to be on or off. The loneliness, nothingness, is closing in. I need you here today. Don't ever fade away.
The song doesn't fade. It's on and then it's off.
Or maybe it was just named after Martin's newfangled effects box. I like my explanation better, though.
How can anyone deny a song like that? If it doesn't send chills down your spine then you're not really listening.
