Ah yes Hooky. we would love to hear the Warsaw live recording from '78. That would be good fun. Perhaps you could persude Barney and Steve to warm up to the idea of mastering and releasing that bad boy. Barney could buy new seat covers for his boat's deck chairs and Steve pay off his credit balence. All this and we could rock out! Love to hear it. And Hooky...don't forget to listen to that CD I gave you at the DJ gig in Brighton the News Years before last. just for the heck of it. Ok..enough from me...

Check out my cool band "Focus Group" at:

I think Mr Hook has got confused. (going off what he said in 'that' recent interview) Warsaw called it a day NY Eve 77 @ L'Pool gig. The changed name to Joy Div. So there are NO Warsaw gig tapes from 78'. The actual Middlesbrough Rock Garden gig he refers to was early Sept 77'. I have my cosins word that 'he was there' and he isn't getting mixed up with the now known 'cancelled' date at same venue from 26/4/80' So a recording obviously exists, i reckon it sounds similar in 'time' to 'At a Later Date' from the vinyl release

I'm quite sure that there will also be the complete Warsaw set from the Electric Circus buried deep in the Virgin vaults somewhere.

Anyone work for Virgin?

Complete set is about 6 songs IIRC.

Somebody I recall tried fairly hard to track this down, but had no luck.

What's the source for this info, first I've seen re length of the set.

No, I wasn't there. I didn't see them until a year later. P.Morely once told me 'about 6 songs'. It was a while back. I'll check if I can.

I also have a dodgy MP3 of "Leaders Of Men" live in Middlesbrough (1978) recorded from a radio show presented by Peter Hook. I can upload it somewhere if someone is interested.

That's the gig Hooky is referring to. It's from 77 though not 78, despite what he said at the interview, judging by Ian's vocals and the lack of varispeed. And the fact they were Joy Division by 1978.

This just in. I asked PM and got this e-mail :

the true mess Virgin made of that electric circus lp becomes more and more apparent . . . a blue ! ten inch ! novelty item . . . i still have nightmares about it . . . yes, newer bands played three or four songs . . . warsaw played on the sunday , three songs i think - novelty, at a later date, warsaw possibly . . . virgin put steel pulse on the bloody thing and they could have put on the prefects instead, if they needed midland guests . . .and also happened to choose the track where barney inexplicably shouted nonsense about rudolf hess, possible due to dramatic amount of pernod rather than any natural sympathies . . . somewhere somehow there must be the tapes but it is interesting that as far as i know there are no bootlegs etc . . .

Looks like it was just 3.
