I love the song but hate the singing. Totally off.

I also always thought he said "I am the boy you can enjoy" for some reason, but recently found out that isn't so. It's just dodgy singing and pitch which is such a same on such a cracking tune.

I don't really understand the lyrics, but I love the song!

Are you sure it isn't "I am the boy you can enjoy"?

There's something vaguely sexual about the lyrics, but knowing Barney, it's about something utterly mundane (if anything at all).

I'd put the Factus 8 EP forward as one of the best things the band have ever done.

FACTUS 8 is probably my favourite NO release... When it all fell into place... Always heard the lyrics as "I am for you can enjoy", although that doesn't make much sense...

Love the singing meself (favourite song - so I would!)

The 'well i should hate this' parts I always thought referred to their enjoying doing a full-on dance track, when they had always been seen as doom&gloom up to that.

Then the 'no more mistakes' parts - thats Barney taking the piss out of himself (second one is something like: "This is the boy you need to, Whooo,

The drum sound is really the business on it. It's also got that vocoderised vocal count-in on the intro which strangely reminds me of Ralf Hutter's crisply spoken "Eins, zwei, drei, fia..." on Showroom Dummies. The change between the intro section and when it really kicks in is just genius.

Then you've also Barney's all-over-the-place vocal with the whoops etc creeping in. Sometimes he hardly completes the line he's supposed to be singing and just whoops instead!

Magic. What's it about? Fuck knows really!

Good point about the intro - it's absolutely magnificent. Sadly, I've always thgought that song itself doesn't live up to it's promise and gets boring quite quickly.

The intro, with Hook, is brilliant, but you can tell they are learning dance music, and the changes are a bit rough and predictable as the song plods on... and yet it hints us into their future ("this is for our future" "no more mistakes like the last one"... i.e. curtis, being gloomy sucked, and now it is fun time... they laid out their plan to us in this song ),

and has to be one of their most underplayed, the type of song a dj could play in nyc tomorrow night and everyone would think he was insane. "what IS that?"

and i bet it shocked Manchester in 82. death disco. (that curtis summoning near the end is nuts... "why don't you hate this?"

and i always thought it was a song from a drug's point of view.... "i am for you will enjoy, i will take you.... "

This is another track that suffers from being edited for Substance. Stick with the original 12", the Canadian Factus CD EP or virtually any of earlier live versions.

The lyrics don't seem to be the point of the song -- it's just a propulsive rock-out. I love it. The off-rhythm county-off, the subtle electronics, that big blasting snare sound, the rhythm, the processed sound -- somehow the whole processed feeling of "Hurt" is what I like the most, as if it's all coming out of a computer or even a lab where some kind of invention is taking place. That and there's so much cheesy 1982 music and "Hurt" is so dark and heavy and cool by comparison (or even without comparison).

I absolutely love this song - one of those top 10 deals, the way it builds up in urgency and the singing alternates from whispery to screamy - ah, great song!

Even if it sounds tinny, still great. Wore out my first ep due to the constant playing of this and Temptation.

This is a brilliant song, its probably my favorite New Order B Side, along with the Thieves Like Us Insturmental and 1963.

For the record, I DO play Hurt at the Nightclub where I DJ and it always goes down well.

Ok - this may seem odd - I've always heard the lyrics as "I am for the kind-of joy, I can give you". Which makes it seem quite dirty, which is lovely.

I'm likely completely wrong...but that's alright.

I adore the song, regardless of the lyrics - it's in my top 3 NO songs.

My fav B-side has to be Lonesome Tonight, in fact it's almost my fav New Order song behind Ceremony

I love this track too because it's New Order at their loosest and most shambolic. It actually sounds like a car crash of a record....manic rattling sequencers and heavily synthesised drum beats all fighting for space and a real mess it is as well. This song is also special for being the first instance of Barney whooping and sounding like he's letting it all go and couldn't give a fuck how badly out of tune he is singing cos he is simply enjoying himself too much. I have this vision of them all on speed playing this - tanked up to the eyeballs - trashing the instruments in the studio creating this huge fuck-off racket....and getting more demented towards the song's climax.

Funnily enough it's still a joy to listen to now cos it always cracks me up! It almost sounds as if they recorded it in one take as well.

It seems as if all the live shows with prototypical versions of songs were the "takes", so to speak. Maybe that's why there was such an edge and power to songs on the album, compaired to nowadays. Older, dyed-in-the-wool monster songs live worked equally as well on the record, but their newer songs (Close Range, HNWYD) sound neutered in live settings.

For some stupid reason my post got lost. Anyway, I'm very close to you in the interpretation.

I hear it as, "I am for/you can enjoy", and I always interpreted as a song about role playing and dominance in a mild S&M relationship, kinda like a precursor to Sub-Culture. Of course I could be wrong, I thought the wind and eagle bit from Thieves was actually, "Love is the id/it supports the ego", and I misheard the opening of BLT, as well as the concluding lines of Temptation which ive misinterpreted 3x over plus I thought Leave Me Alone might have the Falklands actually tied in :D. I'm always all over the place in terms of interpreting New Order lyrics.

BEMN I know exactly what you mean about Hurt, I imagine them all off their tits, somehow stumbling upon this great song by accident, and just going crazy...

Perhaps - and we never know! - this was the very FIRST New Order track where they were completely off their faces on drugs and decided to actually record a song whilst under the influence?

I mean, someone said on this forum ages ago that the A-side "Temptation" had a bit where Barney has a snowball shoved down his shirt and you could hear him yelping or summat - maybe this flip was the logical extension to the tomfoolery of that first song. ....perhaps they had a BALL recording this single - knowing that they were fully liberated from the dour New Order sound of old?

I dunno if I'm talking sense or just bollox, but that to me seems a perfectly feasible theory.....
