Murder

Always wondered about this one. Released as a single after Thieves Like Us, very odd as it has no lyrics, only samples from a film (2001?), Seems odd that after TLU and the great b-side Lonesome Tonight they released this little number with a TLU instrumental as a b-side It was never played live, so im wondering what the reception of it was, or what people on here think of it in general. Personally i think its an odd, virtually instrumental number, inferior to something like Skullcrusher.

Yes the samples are from 2001 a space oddessy and are from the scene in which HAL9000 is murdered by Dave Bowman ( you'd never know it from the movie, but HAL was innocent)

It also has samples from Caligula I believe "crows crows crows, I hate you".

I think it's a great track, and that's only doubled by the samples from my favourite computer.

It was left over from the Power Corruption and Lies sessions, and obviously deemed good enough for a release. The vinyl of PCL has "Where's murder?" written on the run-off - so maybe it was a close contender for inclusion.

Doesn't another vinyl say "I said....where's murder"? been a long time since I investigated runoff grooves.

I've only just noticed things written on the run-off, recently got transmission and ceremony on 7" and noticed little quotes, can't remember exactly what they said but thought it was pretty cool. Yeah, I'd heard murder had been left off PCL but I wouldn't consider it an inferior track compared to other instrumentals, only elegia would beat it I think

I always thought that Murder was probably a bit too similar to Ultraviolence to be included on the album. It'd be interesting to know when they did decide on what would be on, as the working titles of some of the songs were rather different, I wonder if this is the sort of thing in Rob's lock-up.

Did any promo posters of the artwork ever see the light of day? I've got a Thieves one but a Murder one would look so good in the hall.

it was a factory Benelux release, so i don't think there's any sort of promotional stuff out there. i managed to get one in the good old days.

The third pressing of Blue Monday has the run-off grooves notations "Where's Murder?" and "I said, where's Murder?"... Was Murder intended as the b-side to BM, before they decided to put a remix on there?

Good question! Maybe it was, and in the end they decided that they couldn't do without The Beach as well (which I still prefer to Blue Monday).

Ah yes, I'd forgotten the same notation was used on BM, with the extra emphasis as well. I said where's murder?

Someone was obviously keen to find out!

Likewise... Still remember the first time I heard TB when I first got Substance and thinking 'Huh? Some mistake, surely, this is just BM again' and then realising that it was like the same track but different...

Continuing the Hal / Blue Monday theme, it says in the Complete Factory Graphic Album of the BM88 sleeve :

"...is a nod towards geometric abstraction, the luminous concentric circles reminiscent of the lens of the the Hal 9000 computer in Stanley Kubrick's film 2001 : A Space Odyssey."

Crows indeed. In the lyrics section I think it says "Crawl across" too, but I can never hear that in the song.. :S

It's a strange thing when you hear film samples in a song for years and then finally stumble across them again in the original film in their original context. You get a weird sense of deja-vu then dawning realisation. I had that last year when I saw Caligula for the first time.

I think Performance and The Wild Bunch are the most sampled. (By bands in general, not NO). I remember watching those 2 thinking "Jeez, it's non-stop samples"

I lucked across a copy of Murder when it first came out in 84. Was just getting into the Order and thought all my xmas's had come at once.

Personally, I love the track. Also think the B-side instrumental of Thieves is superb.

For some reason, I always thought "Murder" was a response to The Cure borrowing from "Blue Monday" in their single "The Walk". "Murder" is eerily similar to the Cure track "Splintered in her Head". A case of, "Well if you can do it, we'll do it too - see how you like it!"

Probably not :-) But I want to add I LOVE the cover art for Murder... it's one of my favorites.

Thanks for the welcome :) Technique is one of those albums that I can play all the way through and never get bored, even though i've played it a zillion times. I would love to have a nice new remastered edition of it, though.
