les claypool- very good, does his playing with his thumb a lot
robert trujillo- think he uses both a pick and his fingers.
victor wooten- not sure, can't remember
peter hook- don't know, almost sounds as if he plays with a pick most of the time.
gail greenwood- used to be in L7 and Belly- she's pretty decent as a bassist

James Jamerson's work for Motown is highly influential. I would recommend the Standing in the Shadows of Motown book to any bassist.
Andy Rourke (Smiths) and Mani (Stone Roses/Primal Scream) deserve mentions. I like Carlos D of Interpol too.
Melissa Auf De Mar, Darcy and Tina Weymouth all have had good runs on the bass, as did Kim Deal of the Pixies. I have a thing for female bass players I guess

Claypool rules, half his atyle is bastardized banjo technique, sick sick puppy.
Wooten plays with his paws, he has a couple of tuition videos out...watch them, really, do, he's a scary fucker, tho not half as scary as his ugly (OK uglier)guitarist brother who plays a guitar like a bass, slapping and pulling etc, and can basically out do Vic himself.

He's wank though. To be fair he did come up with a crackin opening riff in 1986. Trouble is, he still cant play it properly.

Apart from the Messiah himself (Hooky) Entwistle is my favourite all time bassist.
Not only is his bassline on My Generation one of the best ever, his method of termination (coked up in bed with a call girl) should be an inspiration to us all.

Anyone remember Pino Palladino(?) ? Think that was the name - played on a few albums I had in the 80s - fairly sure he was on some Gary Numan tracks - fretless bass player as was 'in' at the time - i remember him being bloody good at it tho'
Friend of mine Tony Steele is bloody good: Tony Steele based in NewYork these days tho' so I dont get to see him play any more.

people have a hard time getting into rush though, either you think they are the greatest or you totally hate them, i think bith have to do with geddy lee, he voice is very hard to get into, but his bass playing is superb
sting with the police was a great bassist too, i cant take his solo work seriously though
I've always liked Geezer Butler's work with Black Sabbath. And then there's Clapton, but I don't know how he rates as a virtuoso, I just enjoy his jams with Cream and assorted other bands. Geddy Lee.. hee hee... Bill Wyman off The Stones... and Flea off the Chili Peppers.
Last, but not least - Bootsy Collins. Mmmm. Funky.
Errr...strange one, but one of the more technically proficient bassists I've heard is that fella who plays in Rancid. For a punk band of somewhat dubious value, he gets some downright gnarly bass solos at times.

Let's see aside from Mr. Hook A close second is the Roland TB-303(not really alive or dead). I'll also go with the guy from Motown James Jamerson (Funk Brothers) who like Hook has influenced many many many more in various genres. Mani. Glen Matlock. That guy from Rancid - Matt Freeman

You know who's bass sounds really killer on record even though he's pretty much an amateur? Jerry Only from the Misfits. The bass sound is great on the Static Age record. Really aggressive.
Krist Novoselic from Nirvana is really underrated.
Hooky is THE bass god,not for notes per second or technically masterful,for the lines,the style & the aura.& for twatting people round the head with it when they don't stop using a flash camera.....but after the Viking bass god,I agree with Solly,JJ,Gallup,Raymonde & throw Carlos D in there too,'cos there's 'style'....
The guy from Birthday Party/Bad Seeds - pretty full-on sound - rhythmic, hypnotic and heavy. Give them a listen.

Hooky plays the bass like it's a lead guitar. And that's what makes him so fookin fabulous.
