The wonky eyed one has just told radio 6 listners that the worst gig he ever attended was New Order in his home town of Oxford.He did go on to say that they are now one of his favorite bands. So, top of the class for me for being such a great snitch me thinks.

I guess that would have been the 86 Apollo gig? Think this is quite a good gig myself, and i think it's been mentioned elsewhere that this was El Jarvo's (i think) first NO gig and he thoroughly enjoyed himself

I thought Oxford was a cracking gig, real tension in the place and a good set from a band who were obviously pissed off about something towards the second half of the set, but some others didn't like it.

In terms of songs played, those ten were just about perfect for an 86 show to these ears.

Well,for a start they both practically disowned their first album straight after its release. They`ve both had No.1 albums but not a No.1 single. They title their tracks with names that bear little or no relation to the track.

Nah, my 4th. Still don't understand why people even say it was such a bad gig. Don't think some people like being sweared at, if truth be told, and Barney was in full-on potty mouth mode. Ceremony nearly took the roof off late on, lot of pent up tension in that room.

Just because Barney said that,Yorke thought the gig was crap?!!!! Bit of a sensitive soul isn't he?! If I'm right,& Im sure fellow NOOLers will agree,there's many a bootleg from the '80's where Barney & Hooky are being 'friendly'.I was at the Hac' in '86 when Hooky went bananas after a bottle was thrown that just missed Steve.The sight of Hooky stalking & watching the crowd after that made the atmosphere better for me that night. Agree with Old Monkey too on the Ox' setlist,perfect for the time :bow: :clap:

Oxford was a funny one. Something happened to piss Bernard off between BLT and This Time Of Night, and from then on the attitude on stage worsened. Until then it had been fine, they were in great form. They nearly didn't do Face Up, Hooky was all for walking off after Ceremony. There were some dickheads down the front being a bit lairy, not the usual front rows behaviour of the time, and I think that is what prompted Bernard's ironic comments about Cambridge. It didn't have the usual front of stage feel to it, this one. Hard to put my finger on just why. Support band were a local goth band called Chat Show, I do recall, and they were quite good I thought.

That was my second new order show. went to see them in Brighton the next night too, when they did an almost totally different set. those were the days etc, etc, etc. think they did lonesome tonight in oxford, the only time i've ever seen it. Oxford apollo is now the new theatre and is an all seater. great for pantomimes, but morrissey played it a couple of months back so maybe the chaps could play it again to make up for last time...
