Who does the deep talking bit in "Fine Time"?

Nope, it's Bernard with an effects processor to make his voice go all Barry White on us. I always thought it was Hooky, but apparently not!
Definitely Barney - I remember posting the article when this was mentioned a few years back. Unfortunatley my memory is that bad I have forgotten which article it was.

It was me.
I was on 60-80 red Marlboro a day back then.
Well, I was a student. Lots of spare time on yer hands. ![]()
(One of the first two sentences is actually true. Guess which one!)
It was clear in Toronto in 1993 when Bernard was walking the stage with his microphone then, while Hooky was playing bass without any microphone nearby.
Unless it was playback, it's 100% sure it's Bernard.
It was a backing track when the song was performed live but occasionally you would hear Bernard "sing" along with it (Reading '89, Alexandra Palace '98).
My illusions have been utterly shattered by the thought that it's Barney.
I always imagined Hooky testing out the lyrics on a succession of San Antonio lovelies, wearing a Panama hat and white linen suit, with a bottle of Sol in his hand...

Is it worth adding this to the faq? The question pops up every month or so, and given the amount of evidence we have that it is Barney we might as well cast it in cyber-stone.
I dont understand why anyone would think it wasnt Bernard? Hooky hasnt sang on anything since Movement,Bernard is the singer after all. And on top of all that,as mentioned above he did it on TOTP-although the Bez dancing was cringeworthy!
It's Gillian, stupid! She's put her voice through a modulator. The heavy breathing on the Silk Mix is hers too. Steve weighs in of course at the very end with his sheep impressions.
