Favorite collection of singles

Now, come to think of it, all are good, depends what collection you like to listen to. International has 12 inch to Touched and 12 inch to BM that is remastered, with the thunderous bass heard in my car. Substance is the original 12 inch with b-sides. Singles has the proper versions to Temptation and ceremony and confusion. Best of has some 94' versions (then updated) of some songs. Depends what you like. Now all this talking makes me liking them all its hard to choose.

I think I like the Singles collection out of all. By a small margin because of the proper versions.

Now people dont like International, but I consider it a remastered version to Substance and I like to play it as well.

One thing about putting out a new singles collection, I think it replaces the outdated versions.

I cast my vote for "Substance" for a couple reasons. First, I got turned on to NO after seeing True Faith on MTV back in 1987 and immediately rushed out and bought Substance, which was a great intro to NO for someone first starting out. "Substance" is still my favorite album by any artist. Second, I've always loved the classic simple album sleeve by Saville...it's one of those album covers that stands the test of time. And finally I've had the "Substance 1987" poster (the one with the great black and white photo of them from the Anton Corbijn photo session framed in the center) hung over my bed for the past 15 years. So all that being said...

Out of all the compilations The Best Of the US version gets the nod. Certainly the one most played anyway.

Probably Substance. The original,the others have all been cash-in compilations.

Substance was the 1st album I ever bought but "Singles" is packed with a longer career's work, so get's my vote.

Substance would get my vote if the original 12"s of Temptation & Confusion were on it,not that the re-recorded versions are bad or anything,just would prefer it that way.So would have to go for Singles because it's comprehensive & has most of the best versions. ? Best of? No.Never play it.Personally,IMO,think it's aimed at the pop kids,most of the content being TOTP,radio friendly,fluffy songs/versions.I know it's a '?' title,but how can a Best of not contain Ceremony or the original 12" Blue Monday?

Substance was my second introduction to the band, the first being a vinyl copy of PCL that received some random play as a gesture of curiosity, being a serious JD fan. Substance in turn made me revisit PCL and love it, and I adore that period of discovery three years ago. However, I never quite got over the tedium of tracks 8-10 on Substance, and I prefer their shorter counterparts on Singles. Substance disc 2 does have Cries & Whispers and Lonesome Tonight, but Singles has Here to Stay and that top edit/mix of Round & Round. Hard to declare a winner...

Has to be Substance. Quintessential NO, IMO. Plus, it is how I got my introduction to the band. :)

I quite like the Blondie, ABBA and ELO sets. So many to choose from.

OK. I'll go with Singles.

"Substance" with no competition. "Singles" would be runner-up and "Best of" is actually "Worst of" :)

Actually, I'd say "Rest of" is worst of. Of course, it wasn't a choice.

Substance is great, but I always have to put up with Shellshocked, Subculture, and State of the Nation right between two of my favorite songs.

I never really bothered with Singles since I already had most of those songs on CD.

International is pretty good, it kind of turned me onto NO.

But, Best of... has a lot of my favorite songs (and a lot of them in pretty good mixes). It has a couple misses (Not the biggest fan of World in Motion, BM 88, Ruined in a Day, or TBTHOG) but the songs I dislike on Best of I dislike less than Substance.

None are perfect but Substance for me, although the CD misses Mesh (or is it Cries & Whispers?!?) and the edits of TPK & Hurt are obviously not ideal...

Interesting poll. Just last night I was browsing in my favorite used cd store, where the employees take turns choosing which used cd to feature. I've heard JD, Depeche Mode, and The Cure on different occasions, but never the Order. Well last night Ceremony came booming over the speakers and I thought "wow - they are playing Substance. Righteous!" But no, the next song was the full Blue Monday and I realized they were playing International. I agree with a previous poster that this album basically serves as a remastered version of Substance and it therefore gets my vote (although I must admit that I have the 2cd version of it from France so it does have Temptation on it). How exactly does that classic tune not make it on most of the Best of collections????

substance. mostly for sentimental value, as it was my first NO purchase and is probably my most listened to NO album (especially during my first 5 years as a fan).

though singles is catching up to it now as it does have a better selection of songs.

Voted SINGLES because yeah,it's got the lot! And I prefer CEREMONY 7". But then again SUBSTANCE has got the B-sides as well.. :confused3:

Love Substance, but when it comes to the actual collection of Singles, I would have to say Best of...but that's also because I don't have the other 2 cds....don't see a point in buy cds of music I already have...and the only reason I have Best of was because my wife only likes singles of any musician.

Are the other 2 cds worth getting?

Meh. I have International, but not Singles. The only reason you'd need to buy International, IMHO, is for Here to Stay. Of course, if you don't like HTS, you could save your money.

Substance for me, probably because it was my first NO album. Great tracks - desperate for a 3-disc remaster with the full trackisting and unedited TPK.

Still like Singles though, and 'Best of' for the '94 version of BLT.

Haven't got International yet, but if it has the best sound quality I might have to indulge...

Phhhffww... really hard to compile a favorite collection of singles...

Substance is my favourite. remember listening to it in my student digs in Rusholme, then going out to the International or Hacienda to dance to it. Ahhh, happy days...........

I voted Substance- Still listen to it now from time to time and a lot more than Singles or Rest Of, Best Of. International was a bloody rip off- nothing new on there that hadn't been on a best of before.

However... If Singles had contained all of the BSides, then I would have rated that above Substance (only just).
