Irvine, Texas gig from July '89

I've just been listening to this again for the first time in ages and there's some bits on it which I'd never noticed before e.g Barney's Nile Edwards-like funky guitar over the intro to The Perfect Kiss and how he sings the same verse twice on Your Silent Face. I seem to remember that the tour was around the time of the Huge Pernod And E blowout that saw work on Technique all but fizzle out as they were busy crashing their hire car in Ibiza.

As mid-period gigs go though, it's pretty blinding. It also made me wonder this: what are the song or songs which are the rarest-performed? Would Let's Go fall into this category? How much of their output has never been played live (Sanctuary soundtrack album not included)?

Actually Let's Go was played quite a few times. The obvious ones are the very early songs - Homage, Mesh, Cries & Whispers (original version) - all only played a handful of times. Doubt Even Here was also abandoned fairly quickly, only appearing in April/May '81.

I've never seen them play Krafty live.

(I always go for a piss just as it starts).

Sorry, I should say the gig I'm referring to is the Irvine, California gig from 16.6.89. Where did I get Texas from?! I think they do Krafty pretty well live; the bells bit played by Phil slays me every time. I like the lyric too:

"Some people get up at the break of day Got to go to work before it gets too late Getting in the car and driving down the road That's the way it has to be. That's what you do to earn a daily wage..."

The last line makes me smile because it must've been many a long year since Barney was obliged to do that! Ah the rock star lifestyle: rarely up before noon, drugs, women sucking on your cueball noggin...

What I meant was Technique was recorded when they were enjoying sundry pharmaceuticals in Ibiza and later at Real World no doubt so there's a good chance that said indulgence continued with the US tour.

Yup, my mistake! Salvation it is and I haven't had a drop so far today! Ask me in about eight hours and it might be a different story, mind...
