shocker! (ic) on topic

well cats, eight months on shall we all take some time out to conclude on what a really average record this actually is? two decent songs to boot and you lot scream and shout about declaring war on radio one's playlist agenda, let's face it, 'Here To Stay' fares even less, mere europop by numbers. those fiscal pressures seem to be taking their toll? are they really back for the sheer love of it ? or are they just plain skint? go on, you decide.

A return to form? As opposed to eight years of silence and dodgy compilations? Yeah, GR's not the greatest record in the world, but it's far better than it has any right to be. When they announced plans for new material I was dreading it, but I've got plenty of time for the new stuff: GR was worth £12 of my money for "Vicious Streak" alone, and "Crystal" was a killer comeback single. "HTS" IS the Order by numbers, but you point to a better single in the Top 40 when it charts.

Sorry to sound so lame, but I'm just glad they're still around. And face it, all the stuff we love(d) about them - the integrity, the perversity, the mixture of genius/amateurism and arrogance/modesty - are all things that they largely seem to regret. Are they in it for the money? What a dumb-ass question: aren't we all!?!?!?!?!?

Both the gigs this summer are gonna cost most of us around £100+ each. They will play "Temptation". Five seconds in, your money will have been well spent.

Whatever. Keep it coming.......

doubt it! someone got slaughtered on this very Forum for havin the very lip to suggest that a parting of the ways with 32 notes was just a touch of a L*I*B*E*R*T*Y. for the tour last autumn. well GOOD CALL, cos the fucker was right!!! c'mon Brixton 1,2 & 3 they were pretty lame. Jarvo calls it right, Man! they have been chasin the frill for far too long now.

Lets be honest, no one could have honestly expected another LL or Technique after the direction they took with Republic.

It is probably with hindsight my least favourite album if i had to choose, and HTS is nothing as special as people want it to be.

They are however NewOrder and thus the greatest band on earth so clichéd as it may sound - there worst is another bands best ;)

remember when Weller use to rant and rave about not letting The Jam grow old and embarrassing? i used to think "shut up you C***, and just do what you do best, man" well that point came home to roost last year, they all look f****** shot, wasted, OLD, how f****** terrible was that TOTP incident? having yer brand new top ten ditty being pulled not even halfway through! i think they falling well short of what has been expected, they no longer hold the special appeal that they once did.

Still enough of an appeal for you to be posting on the site though eh?

In fairness, Get Ready probably wasn't one of their best. But it still produced 3 or 4 of the best tracks of last year. And being as Brixton was one of the only times I'll ever get to see the order I thought the shows were fucking immense.

I think its way to easy to harp on about the old days. Everything sounds better when it happened in your youth.

And as regards looking old...what the fuck d'you expect, they nearly knocking on 50 after all - and it's hardly like they've taken care of themselves is it?

Fair enough if you thought them shite - I didn't but then I wasn't a fan when they were obviously so much better 20 odd years ago. A couple of questions though - why did you go to all three if you thought they were that crap? And whats all this 'sweetheart' shite about? - is it some attempt at an insult or something?

Seeing them full stop is a privilige these days!! so stop ya whining!!!

You would all be wistfully looking back if they had split up from Republic.. now we've had a new album, an album tour, a couple of festivals and a some forthcoming summer dates to look forward to!!

Be thankful there even still gigging, at least we still got the chance to see em live in the 21'st century!! - who would have thought that 10 years ago eh.. ;)

Gotta agree with you Shug, GR is GREAT (although a different style) it is very nearly up there with the one with Technique, and the style of songs make them good to hear live. Ian Curtis go back and listen to the Mission.

Someone agreeing with moi? I'm getting worried now!:evil4: Not quite as good as Technique - but still my 2nd Fave - Technique just runs blissfully from beginning to end, and while GR is great - it just doesn't run straight through quite as smooth. If the buggers are listening - please play Primitive Notion - please?

Just to add another tuppence here: the Olympia and first Brixton show are two of the best gigs I've ever attended. Stunning stuff, regardless how predictable they may be (though I pretty much creamed meself when they did YSF and Lurve Vigilantes in Liverpool). And if the sound was "bad" in Brixton then, fuck me, yer should have been to the first Apollo date when even I was wincing. And we'd been drinking since lunchtime......

Totally agree with yer comments on the Liverpool concert - one of my fave gigs ever:nod: The sound was fucking brilliant (no disrespect to Gillian) - was on me way to the bar when YSF started - nearly had a fookin heart attack!! Got back to the balcony and started dancing right at the back with 5or6 other nutters - Top Class;) Pity the sound is so shite on the bootleg:mad:

Yeah, the Olympia was seriously special. First time I'd ever seen 'em in a "small" venue, the build-up was fantastic (hours chatting with the Order 'ardcore in the pubs beforehand, conversations which began "Yeah, I remember following 'em round Belgium in '84....."!!!!!) and when they came on and opened with "Atmosphere" I was fighting back the blubbing baby that lurks within all of us. Er, especially when your as tired and emotional as I was. And then "Regret", which saw my plan to "stand back and take it all in" vanish in a puff of smoke as we charged down der front to get seriously sweaty for the remainder of the evening. Not one for auto-nostalgia normally, but the whole thing was a bit of a knee-trembler if you knowworraImean.......

Did you go to the Grafton afterwards? Seriously nieve of us (John & Lorraine were there an all) to expect New Order to attend - bastards went to Cream! Met Bez before the concert - he was also in The Grafton - so we thought our luck was in:nonono: Stayed there and got pissed anyway - nothing could've spoiled that day:nod:

...all of this is making me wistful for things i've never gotten to see. pity me, being so young...

as far as GR goes, though...i'd say it's in my top three. ( Low-Life and Technique being the other two, natuerlich. ) i like it a lot as an entire album...it's got weak moments, true, but for the most part it's very, VERY strong. "Primitive Notion" is an absolutely brilliant song...gets me bouncing around like a maniac every time, full of energy that can't be coming from anywhere but the song itself.

truthfully, when i'd heard that the Order were putting out a new album after all this time, i dreaded it. i really had feared it was going to suck. and then i heard (via satellite radio) the radio edit of the Digweed & Muir Bedrock mix of "Crystal" (though i didn't know which version i'd heard at the time...had to go figure that out later! ) so i bought the album...and of course discovered that the album version of "Crystal" was completely different. but really GOOD, all the same. eventually bought both of the UK CD singles of "Crystal" in search of the remix i'd heard...discovered i really hated the long form of the Bedrock mix...and also discovered that the radio edit of "Crystal" proper is a complete hack job.

at any rate, previous to this, i'd been more of a casual observer...a much more casual fan of NO than i seem to have become lately. i'd *liked* them a lot, yes...but i had yet to be pushed over the edge. GR did it for me...couldn't pry it out of my CD player for *months*. which then made me dig out Substance, which i had only had on cassette...and made me realise i really ought to replace it, as it was really worn out. so, off to buy CDs i went. a few other tapes went this way as well, and i soon found myself scampering all over the place looking to replace my poor worn out cassettes with CDs and LPs. and grabbing 12"s i'd never had. and a good friend finally made me listen to Technique, as i'd somehow missed out on it previously...and i was made properly aware of its brilliance...and on and on it goes. the neverending quest...must...find...more! :D

so, uh...long story short, GR pushed me completely over the edge and into The Fandom *smirks*. so it's got to be good for something. other than the doorstop some people make it out to be.

I have to say that Get Ready is one of the best things I've ever heard. I find it hard to compare to the past releases because its, well its quite abit different. But I just think that its a really strong release and some may say that its not as good as their past stuff, but if you look at the charts these days, 90% of it is completey trash. After all these years in Joy Division to New Order and all the side projects, the group are still able to write incredible songs. I can only see the group going back into the studio in September and bringing out something that tops Get Ready or alot of their past stuff!! They seem more enthusiastic than ever !! So who's to say this won't happen ?

new order are the exception to all those others 80s bands that get back together for the money and put out crap. GR had stayed in my cd player for a good two months and that's a true litmus test for a good record. it has a couple of weak tracks, but what record is truly ever perfect? besides, new order's crap always looks like gold (to me anyways) when compared to the crap other bands on the radio are making these days.
