Another trivial question but what was all that eyes wide shut stuff about?

Perhaps he's had to condition himself into having to do this just in case he falls over on stage? It must be tough playing up there without his zimmer frame propping up that enormous bulk of his.

I read somewhere that in the begining of his singing career he was vwery shy and nervous to sing to big audiences so he closed the eyes and felt better.Nowadays he is probably more secure about it efter all this years...no need to close the eyes...

i'm a singer, and i find (while this may not be his case for the most part. like you said, the shyness factor), but its hard to sing with my eyes opened. its just like a natural instinct. you're singing from another part of yourself, and its a kind of a psychological thing. i have tried not to, when singing in public, but automatically it still keeps happening.

while he doesn't seem to do it 99.9% (lol) of the time anymore, he still does it.

you actually see 90% of singers doing this for a majority of songs at shows. it's also a concentration kind of a thing too. when you're singing and then you see all these people in front of you and lights n shit, its distracting.

When did he ever close his eyes? The majority of old live NO clips I've seen (Temptation, In A Lonely Place, etc), he's usually staring ahead, wide-eyed. To me, it's always been a question of why he didn't close them...

Maybe I just haven't seen enough older material.

that's my possible answer to the original question. in all the earlier footage he has his eyes closed. in the stuff from 1993 they are open.
