Some questions about the Hacienda

Ok, first of all, what was it before it became a club?

I heard the band was paying $10,000 (out of their own pockets) a month to keep it up. Why did they have to pay so much themselves when the money could have been brought in from the shows and services (drinks, etc) each night at the club? Also, the band could have actually made money off the club, too. How did they end up losing so much to keep it up if it had so much business?

Why exactly did it all end?

Just a quick summary. I'm kind of new to this whole end of the NO spectrum... and am interested.

The only people to make any money out of the Hacienda were the drug dealers,and as Tony Wilson once said "they were'nt keen to share the profits"

A Yacht showroom (believe it or not).

The Hacienda did make money but only from 1988/89 onwards, and even then some of that money may have been 'diverted'.

In the early years it would be open most nights of the week and entertain only a very small number of people. Only occasional New Order gigs would sell the place out. Hardly a viable business!

I noticed on e-bay the other day that a certain ex-employee is still trying to make a few quid out of the Hacienda.
