Very interesting interview. I've always had theories on depression and art and what effect drugs have on art but right now I'll just rant...
I look around these days and wonder if it's so bad to feel depressed sometimes. The range of emotions that we all have should be just that... a range. Should we shift this range more towards the happy spectrum?
It might be that Bernard does need Prozac but every where I turn I hear about people on antidepressants. We should always be aware about what the drug companies and other corporations want us to believe.
Maybe we should find the cause before everyone gets over diagnosed for a serious affliction that only really affects a small number of us.
the cause is low serotonin in the brain.
it is like being diabetic or having any other chemical imbalance in the body.
I find it bizarre how some people can pump their bodies full of drugs like alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, pot, heroin, etc, and then get all righteous about not taking anti-depressants...
drugs are drugs.
i agree..drugs are drugs..my previous social worker was taking prozac and i was just sitting there talking to her about my problems and couldn't help but ask her if she was depressed. from what i've seen and know, most anti-depressants are not any good.
never try and have a conversation with someone on speed. oh dear god, that is weird...if they're on weed, they'll fall off the balcony-depends on the person,seen it all ready, acid-i have no idea,heroin-i don't want to know, lsd-don't care to know(i guess they'll just shoot themselves in the head, hunter s. thompson style),crack-cocaine-the worst drug ever made by man,family friend started out as a weed smoker and some girl introduced her to crack-cocaine...she was a childhood friend of my mother's, we all stood there watching her wave a crack pipe around, she was pregnant and still doing crack, and her family knew apparently about this, because how could you miss the smell of that shit,-and almost three months after having her son, her family found her dead in her bed...my father was saying that she had drank cough syrup or something that night.don't know how he would knnow that..anyway, she was dead for 15 hours in her bed before they(her family) decided to check on her. pissed me off...i have anger towards most drug addicts and choose to avoid them all together.

My point might have been missed. I'm saying that regular doctors are freely giving out prescriptions for anti-depressants without a psychiatrist ever getting involved. I find it hard to beleive that 4 out of 10 people have real chemical-based depression. I'm all for treatment of legitimate patients but I think the high stats come from the drug companies who wish to increase prescriptions.
p.s. I am aware of SEROTONIN and the balance or lack of it (my band name)

I agree, many people think that they shouldn't feel bad ever, and often think a few days of feeling low mean they are depressed. It is normal to have ups and downs in life, it is better if we can accept them as a normal process, rather than try and stop them occuring which is impossible.
On the other side if someone does have diagnosed depression they do need help from drugs to start living a normal life, it isn't the same as just feeling low and the two shouldn't be confused.
The Prozac experiment was a bit odd, giving it to people who don't actually need it and just have normal fears and insecurities. Can't blame it on Bernard though, I suppose it was an interesting experiment!
