What bonus tracks would you want to see on the Joy Division reissues?

Hi:

I'm curious what the general consensus is as to what bonus tracks (if any) should be on the Joy Division reissues.

My own thoughts would be that they should complement rather than repeat what is on the Heart & Soul set, therefore they should at the very least include:

"Digital" from the Martin Rushent/Genetic session

"Love Will Tear Us Apart (Version)" from the LWTUA b-side

"24 Hours" (live) from the Still LP

"Atrocity Exhibition" from the Picadilly Radio session

"Transmission" and "Novelty" from the first Transmission session July 1979

"Shadowplay" from the Russel Club gig 13 July, 1979

Any thoughts? Do you agree/disagree/have other ideas?

The only thing I would want is for the reissues to be done right! The Singles release was a disaster so I may be asking too much.

I'm expecting there to be a couple of complete 30/35 min gigs on there in all honesty, one from 79 and one from 80, they apparently have some very tasty recordings that haven't seen wide circulation.

Maybe someone would like to storm the Virgin vaults and get the whole 'Last Night At The Electric Circus' performance. Not sure how it would fit alongside either Closer or UP, mind.

Agreed with both Claude (welcome to the site!) and Tim.

Essentially, proper remasters - as has been stated before, the vinyl versions appear to be better mastered than the Factory/London CD's, including "Heart & Soul" - if this is rectified, then that would appease quite a few of the fanbase on here!

UP : a bonus DVD with the 16 Oct 1979 Plan K footage.

Closer : the complete Birmingham gig (soundboard), including a full "Ceremony" and "24 Hours"

Yeah, most people who own Heart & Soul wont really be interested in rereleases - i certainly wont.

Like you said, live albums are the best way to go.

But whatever happens, it'll be done wrong and receive zero advertising

Only bonus I like to see are live tracks from the same time...I don't think we shouldn't add tracks from any other session than the original album. The way it was decided long time ago...

None, I would just like to see the albums re-released on 200 gramme vinyl.

Any dodgy gig thats seen neither bootleg or semi official release. Preferably something shite in content but heavy in historical interest. Barneys first potty mouth comments welcomed!

Doubt theyd bother with Substance,just the original 3 albums. If the did do 1977-1980 where would it stop? Theyd have to do Permanent then too (which would be a little daft!)

Yeah,i suppose. Im just cynical,and think that they 'bonus' material on the 3 re-issues WILL be the singles & b.sides.

I'm not too bothered about bonuses - but I will buy these, if as Hooky has stated, the sound is greatly improved.

What I do know is - I do NOT want sleeve notes included - this surely goes against the minimalist design of the two original sleeves. Sleeve notes never tell you anything anyway - just a waste of space. So NO Tony Wilson or Paul Morley, if you are reading this, please don't be tempted to write another trite 100 word essay on JD! If you are going to put bloody sleeve notes on - why not go the whole hog and include Band Thankyous eg. Ian Curtis thanks his dog Candy etc (only kidding).

However, I would not be against the idea of putting these re-releases in some sort of card sleeve or box. CD Jewel cases just do not cut it. The card on the Unknown Pleasures sleeve should be textured like the original Garrard & Lofthouse printed LP sleeve and the inner sleeve photo "the hand and the door" should be restored.

I've noticed on most of these CD deluxe edition re-releases that have been coming out thick and fast for the last few years from the likes of The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen and Elvis Costello that the second discs seem to be fleshed out with Demo versions of everything - especially all these Cure re-releases. Are there Joy Division demos (and New Order ones come to think of it) tucked away at Hooky Acres I wonder ? Did they record demos to bring into the studio for Hannett to start work on ? Probably not, as I'm sure something would have surfaced by now. It just seems that everybody else who's been going for 20+ years can still drag something out of the vaults.

for my twopennys worth, whatever they do, lets just hope they do it with the requisite class.

The recent Depeche Mode and Cure reissues/remasters (which are released as 2xCD DELUXE edition digipaks AS WELL AS remastered single album original versions) are by far the best example to follow....they are absolutely wonderful, even if you're not fans of their music (I'm no fan but I'm no hater either) you have to agree that in these cases the reissues have been done justice - although with Depeche the second disc is a DVD, which complicates matters a bit cos this is where the extra tracks and b-sides are.

It makes you wonder that were New Order and Joy Division on Universal instead of bleedin' useless Warner AOL, they may well have got this exquisite new reissue treatment by now. Isn't that a fair argument?

The Who have released 3 deluxe editions of key albums: My Generation, Live @ Leeds & Whos next. In each case the orginal albums both kept to the original format and were augmented with live demos, alternate takes etc. If a similar thing were done with JD, then I would be most happy.
