Manchester. Fookin' obvious. London and New York have a parallel as being the big focal point massive population cities of the respective countries. New Order still come from Manchester, whichever side of the pond you are from !

Hmmm...I hadn't considered Seattle, although it was "the scene" in the early 90s, no question. You may be on to something. Was "Singles" our "24 Hour Party People?"

Detroit and Akron, both industrial, spawned plenty of bands, but a "scene?" Detroit is the home of techno, though.

Cleveland gets both "rivalry" and "no respect" points for housing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in which they set up a big-screen TV each year so we can watch the induction ceremony in New York. Not exactly a football rivalry, but equally bitter.

if you're going with Seattle, i'd say "Hype" would be the correct correlating film to 24HPP. and Detroit *is* the home of techno, and is industrial...but can you think of a specific mad "scene" spawned there? and/or an overwhelmingly influential indie label? i think Seattle wins in both cases. and hey, there's always Chicago... ;)

Manchester is like Pittsburgh PA. COme here and I will show you. I once met Ronnie Moorings from Clan Of Xymox, and he said that it was like Manchester here. What do all think? Down in the strip district in the rain. Look at the buildings. It looks like the video from Love Will Tear Us Apart with Joy Division at T J Davidson or wht ever it was called. I have been to London. The food is bland...........

Pittsburgh may not have the Hacienda, but it does have the Smallman Street Diner...and a really freaking huge airport for no apparent reason. If "The Full Monty" was actually filmed in Sheffield, I'd say that's the Pittsburgh of the U.K.

Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean. The last time I went there was to pay a speeding ticket and there some drunk old guy yelled at me. Said I was a "punk kid" or something...

I'm just guessing here but how about this:

London is the closest thing Britain has to New York Manchester is the closest thing Britain has to Detroit (Detriot was the home of Motown, Manchester was the home of Factory) Chicago is the closest thing America has to Sheffield (Sheffield was the birthplace of synth-pop, Chicago was the birthplace of house)

What is Chicago? Oops, sorry, thought I was on Jeopardy. I guess some people say that Chicago is the second city, but I never listen to 'em as they talk too much rubbish.

I don't think there is an equivilant. The US is just too big. If you wanted to go on music scene you can't narrow it down to one spot becuase there's a lot of cities that that spawned a lot of musical movements, Detroit, LA, Seattle ect.

As far as musical mad days like Manchester and the Hacienda, then that would be New York with Studio 54 and Twilo probably.

Nah, it's not a real SAT question. Still, with all of the Manchester hype on the board of late (24 Hour Party People, Great Manchester Band Singles, Liv's move to Manchester, Drinking in Manchester, Any Good Pedicure Salons in Manchester? etc.) I thought I'd see if there was a U.S. equivalent so we North Americans could relate.
