Now, why the hell can't New Order do it like The Pretenders??

Now then..... have any of you seen the new remastered PRETENDERS titles in HMV this week? (Their first two self-titled albums) I just stumbled across them earlier on today whilst browsing at our local branch and fuck me if this isn't the very same thing that fucking Warners (who are also behind these reissues BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!!) should be doing with the much-requested NO remastered editions.

These remastered albums of theirs come in double-gatefold CARD COVERS looking like miniature album sleeves...with the original artwork. This contains the original album on the first CD - remastered - and then a second CD of live takes and other rarities (of course, done in very similar fashion to all those Universal-sanctioned double deluxe edition remasters that we have so many of these days.)

I know Warners also did the same to REM recently with their back catalogue but released in digipak editions (but these deluxe versions were like the latest Depeche ones in that the second disc is a DVD with audio in 5.1 surround sound and the first disc is a SACD.).

Now why the fuck can't we expect something similar from the New Order reissues in this way? I think it would be an absolutely perfect way to package the albums and have all the artwork lovingly restored, complete with inner sleeves and everything. And perhaps the second CD would feature the single/alternative/12" remixed versions of some tracks plus other previously unissued UK tracks and b-sides all brought together onto CD for the first time.

Every time I see those godawful budget-priced London reissues of their back catalogue albums in any shop I just have to resist the urge to pick them up and smash them on to the floor stamping up and down on them for the travesties that they are (especially the Low Life one with the terrible default font on the sleeve and spine plus the way Brotherhood is usually packaged with that bloody red stripe insert on the front instead of the proper cover.)

ANSWER: All those bands with their deluxe reissue releases are has-beens and were tempted to fall into retrospection. New Order doesn't need all that nostalgic crap since they still look forwards and don't see themselves in a bygone glory.

I wouldn't call Sonic Youth has-beens.

And Pavement is broken up and Matador feels like clearing the vaults/writing Stephen Malkmus checks.

Remastering is snake oil. Big wad of cash to run the old mastertapes ( which will have suffered from gauss-fading and print-through no matter how they were stored) through a oise reduction ( mainly needed to counteract reduced tape output level) an a multiband compressor...and fuck off to the pub for 45 mins.

***REMEMBER*** THEY ONLY HAVE THE STERO MASTERS TO WORK FROM!!!!

You can do the same shit at home if you happen to have some decent plugins.....really...waves ultramaximizer L4 will do as good a job as anything on Singles underwent.

Because they're not on Factory anymore. Tony Wilson would have released something like this 3 years ago. I guess they are just no top priority band for Warners - who knows if the next album, afaik in 2025, will come out on them after the disappointing sales of WFTSC.

you are probably right - NO are a fish in a BIG pond now - no one there seems to care about promoting them properly.

How strange! Only a couple of months ago there was a couple of threads going on about how many forumers were suggesting all these ideas for new remastered / expanded New Order / Joy Div albums and what other tracks they'd like to see fill out the second CD.......and now that I've brought the Pretenders reissues to people's attention and reiterated how I'd love to see the New Order ones done in a similar way everybody appears to have changed their minds and decided that they'd prefer them as they are (with lousy packaging and the rest).

(Mind you, loved Jarvos reply about the OD'ing on Coke and Heroine - rather tasteless but funny as fuck!)

Yeah well, there always seem to be people on here who have to disagree just for the sake of it.

I just want it done properly. no need to add stuff. perhaps on a second disc, but leave the original albums alone. just do justice to the original artwork.
