Golden New Order Moments

The year is either 1985 or 1986.

New Order appear on Old Grey Whistle Test on A Friday night. Barney is wearing a yellow roundneck jumper.

At a time when every band on this program or any music program would play their new single and a classic, as an obvious promotional ploy, New Order shun both of these options and roar through As It Is And When It Was and Broken Promises (both titles as they were then), songs only just appearing in their live set.

Spinechilling.

I have never seen this footage since but remember it like yesterday.

Anyone remember?

I swear they played As it Is When it Was and Broken Promise. I do remember State of The Nation live on something also. Are we talking two seperate occasions here?

And the jumper WAS yellow because I bought one too!!!

As It Is and Sunrise were played on 3rd Dec 85 live from the Hacienda on the Whistle Test. they did two full sets that night. Bernard trashed his Tokai strat during Sunrise, and the song was dedicated to Gary's birthday, whoever Gary was. As It Is had been in the set regularly for eight months at this stage.

State of the Nation and Broken Promise were played live on the Tube in March 86. Bernard wore that jumper.

I remember them on the tube doing sotn, and barny was wearing a yelow jumper (if you thought it was orange your telly was fucked!), and he had a transparent guitar strap, they might have done whistle test but I don't remember it being on around that time.

there was an interview in a mag shortly afterwards, obviously done at the time when barny said he'd seen paula yates wandering around in her underwear and said "I wouldn't mind fucking that", I take it he was desperate!

My memory is obviously goosed.

I must be confusing those two appearances.

As Jarvo said, in the Tube performance, there is a deafening silence between tracks, broken by Hooky saying 'hello' or 'good evening' or summink. (I just watched it and cant remember, already).

The OGWT video is fantastic with AIIAWIW rolling into Sunrise with a mental Hac crowd. One of those 'wish you were there' clips.

Technique Tour, 1989. Glasgow SECC. Me and the Reilly got rat-arsed on the train up from London, straight to the gig - more beverages, natch! "A guy called Gerald" got booed off stage after 2 songs to chants of "Get yer tits oot" and then they came out... My first time seeing them live - feckin awesome! The whole place was one giant mosh pit for most of the set. We were blown away and on a high for days... Next morning we went back to the venue to see who was about and got told to piss off by the road crew. Quality!

Didn't Paul Trowell once say Gary was his brother's neighbour in halls at Sheffield Uni, or something?

Golden moments..shit loads but Hooky marmalising some gobshite with his six stringer at Macclesfield has always been a stand out moment.

Doing Fine Time as an encore at GMex just before Christmas '88. I'd been to Valley Parade that afternoon to see Bradford City get beat and then went with my Shipley friend on the M62 to jolly Mancland as the rain pissed down and my windscreen wipers stopped fucking working!

Top, top night, ACR and Happy Mondays supporting and made even better by Gillian's Emulator crashing twice during the set and Barney not being sure if it work to play Fine Time. It did and everyone freaked. Awesome.

THE golden moment for new order,the hac 83 . opened with ysf,you had to be there honestly,utterly incredible.

That (Tube gig) was supposed to be 'the 1st time' but we couldnt get tickets, geordie twats wouldnt let us in (after bunking off O-level revision class), so had to make do with local boozer (which we got in!!). Those tight pale blue jeans he wore were absolutely shocking - never mind the yellow jumper his mam knitted him

It was State Of The Nation and Broken Promise because I have this appearance on a compilation DVD and I've ripped the audio from both tracks. It's the only live version of BP I've ever heard.

mmmm, which is more likely? Your memory playing tricks (it was a long time ago) or you had a totally uncirculated outtake VHS?

The program did end during Broken Promise (thanks for that by the way) and maybe they did play on (anyone who was there please confirm?)

My memory is highly likely to be playing tricks, I just have this wierd certainty about them being played together.

All I can guess is that they were maybe the first two tracks on a bootleg or at a gig at the time or something, and my memory is of hearing them for the first time.
