here´s an interview on the argentinian newspaper Página/12 where Hooky and Steve say they should call it quits after Buenos Aires gig!

http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/suplementos/espectaculos/3-4537-2006-11-20.html

New Order might have said goodbye in en Buenos Aires“The last live show ever”** Bassist Peter Hook confirmed what -until saturday- his partner Stephen Morris told Página/12 before the Personal Fest show. They say nowadays they look as the "old guys of the neighbourhood”.

by Roque Casciero and Mariano Blejman

“This might be our last concert ever.” Bassist Peter Hook talks and the show he mentions is the one New Order did last saturday night in Buenos Aires closing Personal Fest´s main stage. The interview in which Hook confirmed their split -at least temporary- to Página/12 it was given right before the band´s gig, in one of the comfortable dressing rooms in club Ciudad de Buenos Aires, where the festival took place. But before talking to the bassist it was drummer Stephen Morris who throwed the first stone when we reminded him that in 2007 it would be the 30th anniversary of the band, first as Joy Division and then -after Ian Curtis suicide in March 18th 1980- as main characters of the crossover between dance and new wave New Order. The drummer said they didn´t think about anything special for the anniversary: "We´re not very good in making plans. The good thing about when we started in Factory (their first label, which is shown in the 24Hour Party People movie) was that you didn´t have to plan what you were going to do. You could write a song and say "this could be a good single" and then release it two weeks later. You can´t do that anymore, you have to write and record an album... But the truth is that we´re not good planning anything, so i couldn´t say what are we going to do do next year".

–So, how´s the band´s present?

Stephen Morris: –I really don´t know. This is a strange time to be New Order... It was good a couple of years ago when everyone was saying we were "god-like geniuses" (New Musical Express gave them an award with that name) and the fans recognized the band. In some point now there´re a lot of New Orders around and we´re the old guys of the neighbourhood, so we should stop for a while and let them take our place.

–But the thing is that you´ve been a huge influence first as dark post punk as Joy Division and then in the mix of dance and new wave as New Order

–Yes, yes. I don´t know, it´s good to be remembered, it´s really an honor. And the influence is positive because we´ve been very influenced by Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie and people like that, besides punk rock, and we don´t sound like them. But the influence goes beyond New Order, there´s like a new "new wave" or something like that. That´s why i´d like to try something different, although is not that easy when you come to certain age. Besides, when you do find something different it´s because you crash into it, not because you plan "hey, i´m going to do something different".

–That sounds like there will be no more New Order

–Uhmmmmmm... I could say there won´t be New Order for a couple of years, but as i said before we´re bad planning things so let´s see what happens.

–Are you going to take another 8 years like between Republic and Get Ready?

–(Laughs) What happened is that we got seven songs left from Waiting for the Siren’s Call (2005) and we didn´t want to make an album that was the rest of another one. Besides, WFTSC wasn´t a successful record for our label to say "yes, yes, yes!" but more like "uhmm, maybe"

–Do you feel like you did your job or something like that?

–No. The trick is not getting attached to what you do because you´ll be repeating the same thing again and again. Sometimes you just have to stop what you´re doing and get ready to learn again instead of becomming a copy machine.

Singer Bernard Sumner declined giving interviews in Buenos Aires, saying that he had a cold that we didn´t notice during the show. But Hook, who apart from walking around his trade mark sound for all the main stage also did a DJ set on the Personal Fest, was as honest as Morris about New Order´s future. “It´s time that we stop and think about what do we want to do”, he said. “It´s wonderful to stop when you have to do it. Sometimes when you´re lucky to have it all you don´t appreciate it as you should. So you need a reminder of how things were when you didn´t have it all. In this moment we do have it all, so maybe it´s time that we lose it, maybe to start feeding again. That´s how i feel.”

–Does that mean that your first show in Buenos Aires might as well be the last time you play live?

Peter Hook: –Yes, it might be our last show ever. It might.

–Or maybe it´s a matter of waiting another 8 years to see you guys together as it happened once?

–Maybe another 17, or 30...

–30 years is exactly your annyversary together next year

–Well, we´ve been 29 years together, i don´t think another year could make any difference really

–But are your personal relationships ok?

–Yes, yes, we still hate each other (laughs). It´s a love-hate thing

–Do you have other plans?

–Yes, i´m full of plans. I´m forming a band with Mani (Gary Mournfield, from Primal Scream and ex Stone Roses) and Andy Rourke (ex The Smiths), that is called Freebass.

–But you´re three bass players...

–Sure, that´s the secret (winks an eye)

–And the three of you will play bass?

–Sure! We´ve already wrote 17 tracks and it´s comming along very well. We hope to finish it soon

–Who sings?

–Neither of us, we have a guy named Richard, from Wighan, England. So far so good because we get along very well with Mani and Andy.

–So Freebass is going to unite the three most important bass players of Manchester´s history.

–The reason why we decided to do it was because everyone laughed at our face when we suggested the idea. So we thought "fuck them! we´re gonna show them...". There aren´t many albums with three singers, right?

–How´s New Order´s involvment in Control, the movie about Ian Curtis, directed by Anton Corbijn?

–I´m pissed about the movie right now because Anton Corbijn seems to be getting too much control, precisely. I would have prefer that he showed more repect for us. That´s what he should do. I don´t know, it´s ok. Anton is too pasionate about the movie but i think he should have a wider view. At the beginning he would say "come everyone to help" but now he closed the doors and sent everyone to piss off.

–So you´re not going to make the movie soundtrack?

–We´re supposed to, but the problem is that he´s telling us what to do. and if we don´t tell him how to direct why is he telling us how to make music? Bernard and Stephen seem to be ok about it but it bothers me a lot.

I'm sure I read a post on hear on sunday morning saying according to tim, new order are no more, or something like that, but then it dissapeared.

If it's true, I'm gutted, but you never know with them, it could be a piss take lost in translation.

BTW, why isn't this on the main forum? it's big news.

well, this is not a translation issue, luckily i met new order at buenos aires airport, last sunday, before they took the plane to UK.

I spoke a few words with Peter, and he didn't confirm or deny that will quit, they just have any show in the schedule, not touring, and not recording.

Stunned. IF there is to be no more......zilch, nothing, kaput, zero, then I am stunned. At the age of 34, they have been a part of my life since I was 8!!!! I am grateful that I saw them at Wolverhampton last month and can celebrate the fact that I was 6 feet away from the stage - a first for me being so close in all these years. So, if true, I am grateful that in 26 years of loving this band, I finally got to see them fittingly in a way I always dreamed of, but had never been able to realise till last month. WFTSC is a g8 album - my favourite. 'They think it's all over'....I bloody hope not - it makes me feel old!!! Damn, what will fill the void?

Ah.. I think you are all over-reacting a bit.

This interview was conducted at the end of a long gruelling (for them) tour, and as i imagine happens at the end of every tour, Barney said 'never again', probably, as I beleive he has done on numerous occasions.

Hooky has Freebass going on for a while, and I imagine everyone wants to spend Xmas with their families etc, and re-group next year to discuss the possible future.

I imagine that state of malaise will continue until the release of 'Control', the praise for which will probably galvanise them into doing stuff again.

On the flip-side though, if Warner announce they are dropping them (having milked the back catalogue for all its worth), then that will almost certainly be a final nail in the coffin. Perhaps the ball is no longer in NO's court, and if that happened I would've thought its 'game over'.

Spooky was going to right a similar post except I am 35.I also went to Wolverhampton and was about 6 feet away from the stage.I first heard N.O at my boarding school and got hooked at the age of 12.I felt mature because most of my friends were in to WHAM:rofl: A real shame if the last ever concert was abroad and I don't mean Europe. If it was Europe and I knew it was the last one I would have saved up and gone....Come on lads at least one more in the UK fittingly I think in Manchester if not the Cliffs Pavillion Southend:nod:

Hooky told that the record label imposed some producers for their last album. I prefer Get Ready much more.

I've posted this reply on Digital Republic because I think that's the proper forum to discuss about a subject which is now about the band itself, not the tour:

So what's happening then? I read a message on the Faclist and just ran here expecting hundreds of comments but all is relatively silent... I've seen the other thread in Ceremony and still I see no comments from those closer to the band, I guess you're trying to check the facts before saying anything?

I don't know how I really feel about this... maybe it would be the right time to quit, before a decline which seems to wait for the band if they decide to carry on. Would we want to see New Order play afternoon shows at festivals? I don't know, I don't really know... I'd just like to go back to 1998 when Bernard told me they were back and would have stayed together after the gig at the Apollo and live everything again (and catch a couple of gigs I've missed too - especially Bournemouth this year!) because I know nothing will ever be like them again in the rest of my life.

I know it looked like they split many other times before, but this time it's different because even Hooky seems to agree, while in 1993 he was totally against the split and in 1998 he told me he was the happiest man in the world...

What I'd really like is if they could do a comeback like Morrissey, who got dropped from Mercury and came back into the Top 10 on Sanctuary which is an indie... but I don't really know if there's time left for something like that...

I just know when last year you asked if we preferred the remaining WFTSC tracks to be released as B sides or wait for the new album I just voted for the B sides because I knew anything could happen which would prevent us from hearing them. When there was all that hype about the Godlike geniuses / living legends etc. I just feared there would be a comedown, they just got used to that and then it was like "What, no record sales? But we're legends!".

WFTSC was an excellent album anyway so any track we're missing could be a lost treasure, I'd really like to have no regrets about them... the ideal thing would be get out the unreleased tracks, play a short final tour (would like to see them one last time), and then if they really do agree it's goodbye.

BTW have you heard Loto's Cuckoo Plan with Hooky? It's fookin' great!

I just hope they were taking the micky as usual. a short break may be benifical for them. mind you a short break. Anything more than a year and i'd start to get worried. I'm still hoping that the new album will see the light of day reasonably soon.

I'm not sure I could face dark days like those from 1993 to 1998 or to 2001 again. :(

I'll try.

This better only be the joke alluded to in the Ceremony forum.

If thats it so then so be it, nothing lasts forever.

in this time, i think only time at last in my heart and soul New Order gives me peace change in my heart, sorry but i'm emocioned.......

I could go either way here...

I would be sad if they packed it in, as I only got into them during the Get Ready era.

But I also don't want them to turn into a parody of themselves, loose their focus and put out a DM-esque slew of piss-poor albums (Ultra and Exciter, I'm talking to you!)

Slightly misleading thread title is it not? :nonono:

Personally, I'm reading an off the cuff phrase of "it might be our last gig" which, to be fair, is very different from "the band is finished and we'll never tour again" as the thread title suggests :skeptic:

Sounds to me like a weary and speculative comment has been a tad oversensationalised by the muso journalist in question. Of course they're going to sound tired, pissed off and disinterested by the end of a slew of gigs; what band wouldn't? They want to get home to their families and back to some sense of normality for a bit and not think about work.

I reckon they'll take a year or two off but will return with something. I'd really be surprised if it's the complete end of New Order especially after such a string of ace live shows where they seem to be really enjoying it all. They have 7 songs unreleased, a film about Ian Curtis about to appear so there's loads to play for once they've had a chance to have a rest.

As I say, this thread could've been titled better.

I guess, it wouldn't be that surprising if they decided to take a long break for a while. Think of all the other projects theiy are working on: Hooky has his Freebass, the Cunningham-lad's going to revive his little Marion again and well... Stephen and Barney, maybe under the name of 'The Wicht Doctors From Zimbabwe' or 'Black September' or whatever else, could work on the Control-Soundtrack. Or Barney could revive Electronic once aigain. Who knows? No one knows...

who knows?

don't think they even know whats around the corner.

they just do what they want when they want, AND THATS THE BOTTOM LINE, coz... and not many bands have that freedom of choice.

never say never with new order.

Seems to me that this is no longer the case....which could be one of the reasons for the frustration that may cause them not do do anything else for a while or ever. hooky says

'Besides, WFTSC wasn´t a successful record for our label to say "yes, yes, yes!" but more like "uhmm, maybe"'

Could that even be the reason that they did the signing at virgin? because the record company are on there backs to sell more?

Who the hell knows? Depeche Mode threatens their fans with "this could be it folks" every interview they do and they're still recording. Then again, New Order is pretty flakey when it comes to schedualling themselves so like I said, who knows?

Yup - I got into JD when I was 8 - 1980. Maybe even earlier. My brother is ten years older than me and he got me into it. I remember playing my cassette player in the garden in South Africa where we lived at the time. So, I've followed them for a lonnnnnnng time. Interestingly, there is not ONE song from any incarnation of the band that I do not like. I love the lot. JD, Electonic, NO, Revenge, Monaco, Other Two, Freebass(I'm sure). They can't fail to impress me.

They said it was over in 1980, 1989, 1993... New Order do what the fuck the want when the fuck they want. They'll be around for a long time yet. DJing, soundtracking, guesting/producing, 'solo'-projecting, the list is long.

Scary thread title, ahhh!

I'm not too worried about this--if anything it sounds like they want a bit of a break. Fair enough. I hope they don't really call it quits though, after finally getting a chance to see them live it'd really be crap not to have any NO concerts to look forward to. Not to mention the new tunes!

Listen to you all.

I posted about this the other week after the Blackpool show and got slated.

They are finished. Yesterday's Men. They ceased to be relevant after Acid House. Technique was the last record that meant anything. Even when Republic came out they had had their best days.

Shrinking gig attendances. Flagging record sales. Mediocre records. Expanding wastelines.

The sad thing is not that they are quitting now, the sad thing is they did'nt do it 15 years ago before besmirching the memories.

This comes from a 36 year old who has been a lifelong fan.

Never mind New Order, are you still firmly entrenched in rose-tinted nostalgia land when everything was just so much better "back in the day"?

Glad that finally there is some vaguely 'official' news on this! Far too much speculation and denial flying around.

The main problem nowadays seems to be that you can't do tour dates without releasing something, but I don't know if that applies to one offs??

I can imagine them coming back with the odd gig maybe when they get bored!

It will be sad if it is finally the end, not just for the band, but all the great people I have got to meet up with because of them

Well, we can only wait and see what's going to happen to our beloved band. I hope they don't quit in 2007 (particularly in Sept.) I will be 21 at that time, and to not going to a club to see NO would be tragedy for me... but if the guys part ways, then I'm fine with that too. I need some time to adjust, though...

I'm surprised that Hooky is pissed off on "Control."

hey, that´s not fair and you know it. it´s true that i did translate it to english from the newspaper which is in spanish. but i could get the original recording of this interview, the journalist himself emailed me. it says what it says, period. if you like it, good. if you don´t then i´m sorry.

and about the thread title, well i didn´t mean they´d split up. it was more like "about the rumour". now that i see it yeah it could be a little over the top. i´ll change it. :thumb:

Sorry, didn't mean to question your translation. I wouldn't be able to do it!

It's worrying but then they took a break from each other for five years so it's not unprecedented. I suppose that once you get to their old age, the romance of touring etc becomes a bit of a bind!

Yes, it would be a tragedy if they definitively called it a day as we'd have no more new music from them but I'd say they'll split for a while until they feel they've rested etc enough and fulfilled themselves in other ways (remember that Hooky especially did just this with Revenge and Monaco and so Freebase is part of a pattern).

Twenty-nine years together is a bloody long time. You can forgive them for feeling jaded creatively with each other. I really hope they don't split for good and take a long break. We'll miss them in the mean time and pine for new music but the music they've created already is eternal.

Ps I saw them on the BBC news last night! Dickie Branson was at some Virgin Megastore thing and the Order were on-stage with him. It was not an Order-related story as Branson was huffed that his NTL bid for part of ITV had been blown out in Sky's favour but it would seem the Order are back in Manchester. What happens now (or doesn't) is up to them.

You guys have no idea what it meant for New order to be playing again. it was a major deal. You need to go on an indie aagain and get away from the demands of a major label. Remember how important that was to New Order's development? Please please please...don't stop the New Order....--Justin beck

Old guys in the neighborhood? So what. So is Herbie Hancock...still hipper than more than half the shit out there. You gotta brush off some disrespectful corporate label's comments and find a new label. You need a NEW LABEL>>>that;s all. You're not that old..we love you..you see how many young people are digging you at your shows..how many cutting edge bands always say New Order NEw order.

Come on guys...don't let silly insecurity get you...you've been called "washed up" before..you ALWAYS show 'em..every time..every time.

The sad thing is not that they are quitting now, the sad thing is they did'nt do it 15 years ago before besmirching the memories.

After having #1 albums and singles - isn't down the only place to go? Do we really expect them to be making revolutionary, chart-topping albums this late in their career?

NOs peers from the 80s haven't interested me at all for about the last 15 years. Yet WFTSC is one of the most enjoyable albums to come out in the last while.

Even putting out a good album now and then that breaks the top 40, still being an influence on younger bands - isn't this in itself exceeding expectations for a band this far along in their career?

What Becomes of the Vikings if that was the last NO Gig?

well it sounds like they are not that into it anymore. in the past you might say they will just go in hiatus for a while, but this lot is middle aged now? they probably wont ever come back for recording, maybe the odd gig

Come to think of it, look at us... We've all loved them all our lives, for many of us since they started out pretty much, and since then Ian topped himself, the whole thing fell apart, came together again, fell apart again, came together again, fell apart again... Need I go on? What can I say, I'm a fuckin fan, whatever they churn out in the future I'll be buying, slagging off then falling in love with it a couple of months later, and posting shite here, getting pissed with the lads every now and then, going back to Mancland on pilgrimage whether they actually split up or not.... And after all we've been through, to get so fussed about Hooky and Steve being funny in an interview they were probably not taking too seriously (no offence) when they got back together after Ian, after Factory, after drugs, after Rob Gretton, after Steve and Gillian's poor baby.... Do we not LEARN? :read:

I am very sad to hear this NEWS, too.. I have been thinking about it all day! I do not want to believe it but even if it is true, Hooky will be doing his DJ! I think!! So, we can still go to see him when we turn 21 next year:)

I agree with some of the comments on here.I think Never Say Never.Watching them on stage, the playful banter, and they look like they're enjoying touring now than they've ever done. If anything they want to fuck Warners off. It's like having a partner who demeans you all the time.Get back to releasing singles when THEY want. My first impression so as I saw this thread tonight was...FUCK.Have I just met them all for the first and last time? Why didn't I go to Wolves? When CONTROL comes out,NO will be flavour of the month again, and WARNERS will be counting the coffers.Another compilation?

Monty, Warner is remastering all JD stuff for Control, not sure they count on NO...

Oh FFS pull yerself together you's lot.

Catch em at the end of a tour totally knackered and ask em what they were doing next year? I really didnt expect a different response.

If they said ' Oh we are doing a joint headline tour with U2, and releasing one single a month, every second Tuesday, during 2007, and we are currently writing 'Ian Curtis: The Musical', before we release a double album 'Off to the Knackers Yard'.

Then you know they would be splitting up.

Too many arguments to rip to shreds here but saying they haven't written anything that meant anything since Technique probably sums up where you're coming from. Regret and Crystal have both appeared since Technique and piss all over anything that appeared on that particular album, imho. Which tracks mean anything from Technique I'm still yet to fathom. But if, as you're 36, that's then possibly your first studio album I can see where you're coming from. Sort of.

Shrinking gig attendences? They've just headlined two festivals in South America and sold out two Sao Paulo shows of something like 8 or 9k. They also played to 8k in Brasilia despite the gig only being announced at 3 weeks notice. The recent UK tour was similar in size to their last sizeable UK tour of the 80's - in the summer of 87 - so I'm not entirely sure where that fits in with your logic either.

Flagging record sales? You'll have to remind me how many units everything from Movement to Brotherhood shifted cos even I can't remember. Don't recall those albums making huge dents in the top 10 but I'm sure you were around to correct me otherwise.

Expanding wastelines? (WTF is a waste-line?). 33 year old blokes are generally slimmer than 50 year old blokes. Well. I. Never.

And "ceased to be relevant after Acid House". What on earth is that supposed to mean? And what had Acid House got to do with New Order other than a silly stab at the genre with Fine Time, which thankfully lasted longer than most acieeed did.

Take off the rose-tinted spectacles, now there's a good lad.

Been a fan since 83 so youa re way off. Been watching live since 85. So sorry, I was there. Regret and Crystal are OK but are New Order by numbers - and 2 of only 3 good tracks in 18 years. Technique is not their best, nowhere near, but when it came out they still mattered as a band

Summer 87 - GMEX Manchester, sold out weeks in advance.Summer 06,- GMEX, one of several bands on bill, only partially opened due to poor sales.Only 600 in Bournemouth this summer. Gig moved to smaller venue.

I can't be bothered to research it but I would bet my house that the mast two albums sold nowhere near as many as the two previous. Nowhere near. Record sales are well down.

This really shows your ignorance. New Order were using synths and drum manchines in 81. Arthur Baker produced them in 83. They were big fans of the New York dance scene in the mid 80s. They played at Paradise Garage in the early 80s. They went to Ibiza late 80s. They were one of the pioneers of bringing dance music structure and texture to rock. Most of the early Acid House pioneers from that era quote New Order as an influnece. They were regulars on the Manchester rave scene. Your comments really made me laugh!

Like I've said, Crystal means more to me than anything they did during the Technique era. I've got a billion memories wrapped up in that one track from all over the globe these last five years.

I still fail to see what's so infinitely special about tracks from Technique, but then admit, maybe that's just me.

My comments made you laugh? I'm not the one reading from the history books without appearing to have the slightest ounce of knowledge about dance music in this country. Arthur Baker produced New Order in 1983? Well, I never. They went to Ibiza in the Summer of Lurv, did they? Again, I'm gobsmacked. You're so insightful. Where did you get this info? Barney attends a party, and this means he's 'influenced' it? Now you're probably gonna tell me Blue Monday was cutting edge and light years ahead of the rest of the field and that no-one in this country had produced a record like that previously? Or that Confusion brought Electro to this country (perhaps six months too late, but there you go). Or Fine Time opened up Acid to the masses (er, a good three months after we'd already had an Acid House no.1 in this country and the top 40 was full of dayglo spaz's jumping on the bandwagon). Sounds like you've swallowed too much of the myth and need a reality check. New Order influencing dance music is right up there with the Curtis 'died for us' tales. Complete bollox.

If you don't like New Order, and haven't liked them for the past 17 years then why fcuking bother posting here and moaning about how awful it is now, and how wonderful it was way back when, in your day? Fcuk me, there's a billion things I liked in 1989 but I'll be blowed if I can be arsed to scan the net to have a whinge about them all 17 years on.

And I'm still trying to figure out what actually happened at G-Mex in the Summer of 87, and then again this year? You've lost me on that one.

Do you have to stop referring to yourself as a fan at some point, if you think they're no longer releasing life affirming material? I'm probably not a fan in some people's eyes. I've never travelled more than 200 miles to seem them and I've got less than 100 items in my collection. I have been listening to them for 23 years and probably will carry on doing so until I die, just not much of the stuff released after '89.

I dont 'love' Modern New Order. In fact, i'm pretty much with Mike, the live stuff is much better. Although the gigs this eyar were mostly rubbish because of that same drawn out set list.

The piss ups are mostly good, and the sets always start off excellently. After that... well.

In all honesty, I would be very surprised if they never do another gig. Surely someone will put together a suitable financial package for them. And we'll all still go, including me, regardless of how much i moan about it.

Bless.

Do Get Ready, Republic and WFTSC mean anything to anyone's lives? They've written some great tracks since but Technique meant something to a good chunk of a generation of people. By the time I got round to seeng them for the first time, it was a 30,000? crowd, a crowd that's supposed to have inspired a magazine that inspired a youth culture. Do the last 13 years honestly have the same impact on your life as the 1st 16?

Those three albums mean a great deal to me, especially Republic and Get Ready and the WFTSC single is a modern masterpiece.

Frankly I'm sick of so called fans dissing this most wonderful band. Especially in a thread commiserating their possible passing. I'm not saying that you have to love their entire output, but please stop making the same inane comments at every possible opportunity. Are you sure you actually are fans?

If you want to live in the past fine. The rest of us love the modern Order.

We don't care that you lost interest in 1989. We still love them.

If you don't care what I think, feel free to ignore it.

Well as long as you post your opinions i think i have right to counter them.

A fan imo isn't somebody who hasn't much nice to say about their supposed favourite band.

Live in the past for all i care. I just don't care about you crapping on the order.

What opinions have you actually countered? You sound like a precious fan boy to me. I make a general point that New Order were once influential on people who went onto be influential themselves and you counter it with, 'well I liked them albums'. Sheesh I'm sure that's a cultural legacy right up there with their God-like genius award. I'd hardly say I've crapped on them either. Releasing Jetstream has done more to crap on their legacy than I could ever manage.

I dont think it makes any difference if they call it a day. They have had they best moments, and is it really worth them carrying on another 5 years in case they write another Crystal or Regret? No,is it fuck. They should just give us a huge 20 disc boxset of what we want then fuck off to live their lives how they want-they've done what no-one else can,got nothing to prove and have done it all their way.

People keep using the word 'they' out of context here, surely?

As if it's New Order here who are possibly calling it a day as a collective decision.

Which probably isn't the case at all, now is it? And any future cessation of activity is more likely down to an individual than as a group united. You know, I'm just saying.. . .

"Precious fan boy" is exactly right.

You have to grow up.

New Order are now just another ageing rock act. Once brilliant. Now no longer.

I was a fan, now I am a grown man who is not a "fan" of any group.

And I stand by what I said. They are no longer important to the music scene. They no longer break any ground or do anything new.

Gig attendances are right down.

Record sales are right down.

They are 50 years old and should be making their living elsewhere.

Live with it, Fan Boy, and stop being so teenage about the whole thing.

I don't often post here, but felt compelled to respond to Blunderer's point:

"And I stand by what I said. They are no longer important to the music scene. They no longer break any ground or do anything new."

Does this mean that any band that are no longer important to the music scene (how on earth do you gauge importance??), and that any band that doesn't break any ground or do anything new, simply isn't allowed to make music any more!!?!?

Surely that make the iTunes online store virtually empty!!

(Seeing as you're obsessed with statistical analysis of an artform, if your rules apply, then the Top40 WOULD be empty)

Bloody 'ell, this is entertaining!

I feel quite shallow in my opinions: enjoying NO, enjoying the gigs and enjoying the company of the people who like them too. I could build up a decent argument about which song/album/gig is best/better/worse, but maybe the enthusiasm for that is a male domain! I accept that what ever people do in their 20's is usually more ground breaking than in their 40's/50's and that'll do for me!

Interesting to read the 'debate' though nevertheless!

Exactly, music is subjective.

You don't have to give a checklist as to why you do/don't or should/shouldn't like it. Same way as you don't have to explain why you've painted yer living room the colour you've got it, or have to bullet point the reasons you're in love with the person you share your life with. Everything is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

People shouldn't listen to stuff just cos the NME told them to, or cos they heard it influenced someone else who was maybe hip. Or just cos that band sell out multiple stadium tours. And they certainly shouldn't stop listening to music just because the lead singer is fatter than he was 25 years ago.

No, read again. My argument is that New Order's past is good and their present is bad. A world of difference to what you have put. There are plenty of bands out there now at the cutting edge. But New Order are not one of them.

And you've still not stated what went on at G-Mex in the Summer of 87, and earlier this year? Certainly nothing New Order related that I can think of?

Well, trainspotter, it may have been 88 when New Order played Gmex. I was there but I have better things to do than keep notes as to exactly what month it was. The point remains the same. Then, they could sell out 12,000 at Gmex in a few days. Now they struggle to sell 3000 for the Apollo. So my initial point, that attendances are down, still stands.

You're just flaming this forum for fun, and I claim my £40.

I am not flaming at all, don't be precious. Read my other posts. I am simply stating my opinion. And others are agreeing.

Oh, and 'precious fan boy' seems far more applicable to you than anyone else who's posted on this forum. Cos you're now dead upset and grumpy that your band ain't doing the stuff you're happy with. So you're throwing your toys out of the pram.

Upset and grumpy? I couldn't give a flying toss! They are not my band, they never were. I have grown up lots from the days when I had "my band". That's what kids do. Have you?

Though, what sort of prick falls in love with something just cos someone else told him it was cool twenty years ago really does need the proverbial rocket up his arse at 36 years of age. Or a good wake-up call at the very least.

You are getting even funnier! It was 24 years ago when I got into New Order, and it was nothing to do with what anyone told me. You know nothing about me, actually. Your assumptions are amusing but make you look a little infantile in your half-arsed attempts to argue

So, want to get back to the original debate, Fan Boy?

My points, in summary, were:

New Order are no longer important or groundbreaking. Their gig attendances are falling Their record sales are falling They are getting old They were brilliant.

Want to have another go? And watch the assumptions this time.....

Blunderer I don't see what the fact that they are getting older and wider has to do with the music that they make :confused2: I think this 'point' has a lot more to do with the fact that you are aging yourself and wish that you could go back to the good old days it seems very important to you to state your age and how long you have been a fan for constantly. I only mention it because you have brought it up...personally I think the age of the band and their fan etc has got bugger all to do with the subject. :skeptic:

New Order no longer important or relevant?

Radio One said this about Depeche Mode in 2001. Their recent album sold over 3 million copies and they've just finished a 12 month world tour regularly playing to five figure audiences. While New Order can't manage those stats, I'm not particularly concerend if they're important or not anymore...so long as they continue to write great music, that'll do for me. Isn't that all that matters??? I don't think NO have been genuinely ground-breaking quite as often as we think...perhaps when intergrating dance culture into rock music and vice versa, but they'd finished doing that by the mid 80's.

Many of NO's finest moments have little to do with being ground-breaking, and a lot to do with simply writing memorable songs.

When was the last time the likes of The Rolling Stones were ground-breaking or important? But they still continue recording and playing to huge crowds because they still love doing it and have a big enough fan base to make it worthwhile. If NO want to continue, and can still write songs that they're happy with (and let's face it, we've all been happy with their quality control in the past), I'm sure there'll be enough of us out there to buy their CDs and trot along to see them live.

Like a few other have pointed out...even at their most 'important and groundbreaking', did NO ever play many gigs that were bigger than they've played these last 2 years? Personally, I don't think NO suite large venues and 20,000 crowds like DM do anyway.

I've played NO (old and new material) to a lot of people younger than me who are more into today's guitar bands (Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, etc), and the reaction was always positive.

They may not be 'relevant' anymore in some spurious, MTV-led view of the current rock world, but NO continue to attract interest from every generation.

So, you now only listen to bands who are 'cutting edge'. Explain to me how that one works. Was Blue Monday cutting edge? Not really. Just a very commercial example of something which had gone on years before. Perhaps Confusion? No, not really again. More of a jump on the bandwagon. Fine Time maybe? Again, no. Perhaps Temptation and EGG were formulating something new, but then everyone was attempting somethign similar in the early 80's. So what do 'the kids' (and you, presumably) listen to these days which is so cutting edge? This should be good.

They didn't sell out G-Mex in days, the gig was announced in September and was over subscribed maybe two months later, before tickets were issued. We're not all thick cunts with no memory. Doesn't make me a trainspotter. Point is, that was their first gig in over a year when everyone thought they'd split up. And it was a one-off gig. And they were at the peak of their powers. And their entire audience was late teens / early twenties. That same audience is now late thirties / early forties. Or should we all run out and go to gigs again quite so quickly. Imagine most of that audience have other priorities these days, don't you?

Upset and grumpy? I couldn't give a flying toss! They are not my band, they never were. I have grown up lots from the days when I had "my band". That's what kids do. Have you?

You're not upset and grumpy? Then why fcuking bother coming on here moaning? There's lots of things I liked twenty years ago but don't now. Why feel the need to whinge?

My points, in summary, were: New Order are no longer important or groundbreaking.

  • And? So, you only listen to music that's 'important' or 'groundbreaking'? You sound like a pretentious teenager with such a comment. Their gig attendances are falling
  • see my comments about the summer of 87 tour. Or the recent gigs in South America. And how many people went to see New Order in huge venues between, say, 81-86 when you of course were following them around and they were so brilliant! Not a lot of people, eh? Their record sales are falling
  • the likes of Crystal made top 5. How may units did BLT shift in its day, pray tell? Or even the Perfect Kiss, which many regard as a stonewall classic. Didn't dent the top 40, did they? They are getting old
  • hardly an argument. We all are. They were brilliant.
  • unilaterally brilliant? I think not. Go listen to Way of Life, Shellshock, Ecstasy, Doubts Even Here, The Him, We All Stand, Guilty Partner, State of the Nation ... and then try and tell me those tracks are brilliant. Bless.

So, in summary, you only listen to music by young, thin blokes who play big stadiums and sell loads of records? But also retain an air of 'importance'. You're really gonna have to tell me who these mighty artistes are? I'm struggling for names.

have just read the posts, firstly, I'm sure New Order will be back. WE'VE seen this kind of thing so many times before in bad times for the band, let alone these good times.

Secondly, these whiners who post about how NO aren't as good as they were, essentially fuck off and whine somewhere else. I am not interested. I've seen NO concerts from the early days through to now, and JDNO are still wonderful.

My thoughts exactly.

Young, thin, innovative, influential, selling loads of records and touring stadiums everywhere?

FUCKING NOBODY that's who. Coldplay? The Killers? Radiohead? Blah, blah and blahhhh.

Jeepers. How this thread has unfolded. For a fan site, you lot do aint half slag the band off at times. I think it's fab that anyone can be a musician and do this for a career spanning 3 decades and hopefully another. I see their name in lights - not yours, so pee off and start another forum if you want to debate who influenced who and what song is great or crap. Oh, do it on another site as well. And to say you're old at 50! I hope you don't feel that way when you're 50. I think it's great they can do it and are doing it. Long may it continue and make people happy.

If it is the end, then so be it. It was also the end in 1989, and 1993, and things seemed uncertain for a while after 1998. In some ways I think they won't quit, but just return erratically and occasionally. It's the way they did it before.

Yes, gig attendances are falling. But the people who were 20 "back in the day" are 40-45 now, with children, mortgages, and divorces. The money isn't there.

The venues on their last tour were no different from the venues they played pretty much constantly from 1984-89 anyway : civic halls, lesiure centres, the odd arena.

And singles sales? Well, "Perfect Kiss", "Bacon Lettuce Tomato", "Run", "State Of The Nation" all barely bothered the Top 40 either, so current chart positions are irrelevant in many ways.

If it is the end, I hope they do the decent thing and tidy up the back catalogue : issue the VHS only shows and Montreux 93 on DVD, and release deluxe editions of old albums with rarities so it can all be put to bed.

Probably not though.

Another point: No's releases have always met mixed reviews and unpredictable sales. Their back catalogue is obviously classic now, but it wasn't at the time.

Low-life is probably the only one that was universally praised. Movement, P,C&L, Brotherhood all got mixed reviews on release. Technique in north america wasn't considered that great either, mostly because at the time the journalists were old baby boomers that didn't have a clue as to the scene it came from and had a knee-jerk reaction against anything 'dance music'.

And as previously mentioned, what are now considered some of their greatest songs never broke the top 40.

It's hard to be objective when you've been a fan of a group your whole life - but I can sincerely say I think their last two albums are some of their best work. The chorus of Jetstream grates on me but I really don't get it when people say their records are becoming an embarrasment compared to their 'glory days' - it's bullshit.

  • I was never interested in Depeche Mode.
  • Record Sales don't prove, if a record is good or bad, only if it's mainstream or not.
  • Same as for gigs.
  • I never expected that New Order would revolve the music the last years again.
  • New Order wasn't the same as in the 80s.
  • They did a very, very good job the last years.

Some very different opinions on this thread!

Speaking for myself having been a fan of New Order for 22 years it is very strange to read that this could be the end. There have been other bands for me; Stone Roses, the Smiths and more but none has held the status for me as New Order.
I have a feeling we will see some more of them, but if they want to call it the day then that is something that´s normal. -Everything has an end, even New Order. Wouldn´t mind though having New Order for a few more years and I regret that I didn´t see them in the UK if this was really their last tour. If they quit we will doubtless hear something from Freebass and guess Bernard will continue doing music.
-The lay low period from 1990 - 1998, with the Republic exemption, gave us Electronic, Other two, Revenge and Monaco which at least gave me a daily fix. - So if at least we get some output from the lads, that´s at least better than nothing at all.

Dunno about you lot but I think that NO are big enough (as people)to be upfront about it and announce to a live audience if a tour was going to be their last. Not to say I think they will - I just think they have the balls to do it and personally I'd appreciate that very much.

Didn't Weller announce The Jam were splitting up before they launched into live set on The Tube?

reading Steve's and Peter's quotes I think they are just quite unsure how they should move on. seems they are now getting bored repeating their formula, with poor sales of WFTSC, and the general mood of being a has-been (in terms of influence and coolness). this just proves to me that they still recognize what's going on around them and that the idea of New Order is important enough for them not becoming a karaoke tribut band.

if they really want to think things over, get motivated and start anew, just look what Wire have done with "send". not that many sales, but what a sound. unheard of before.

Chris owen wrote: New Order no longer important or relevant?

Radio One said this about Depeche Mode in 2001. Their recent album sold over 3 million copies and they've just finished a 12 month world tour regularly playing to five figure audiences. While New Order can't manage those stats, I'm not particularly concerend if they're important or not anymore...so long as they continue to write great music, that'll do for me.

I totally agree with you.

Being a Depeche Mode/U2/New Order fan, I never compare those three bands... they are different. And for me, it doesn't matter if they sold out stadiums, arenas or only 10.000 tickets.

If they keep doing great music that moves me, then I'm a happy girl and I will continue listening to them.

I am thankfull, that I had the chance to see NO live. A year ago, when I started listening to them I said to myself: "I'll definitely never have the chance to see them live"... well, a year later I did, and in my country. I could never ask for more.

Ok, maybe I dare to ask another studio album and a new tour, asking doesn't hurt, right?

Given their recent run at success for WFTSC, touring, interviewing the nine yards I'm not too surprised. It is true how sad this would be...I've been a fan since I was 16 and now I'm 34! but, hey now, what about the material they have written that has not been released. Hopefully there will be at least that album ala "Strangeways Here We Come."

El Jarvo wrote:

Blunderer wrote: Listen to you all.

Bless.

If I ever read another post, it'll be too soon.

Class.

Well I got into new order about two years ago and their new stuff means as much to me as their 'old' stuff. I don't care how old they are. Look past that and listen to the music they are making. Although I understand they have to consider record sales, that doesnt mean I'll be any less upset if things come to an end. I love get ready and i love waiting for the sirens call and the songs on them move me as much as some of the older stuff.

They have by no means lost their talent, been outdated or anything in my opinion. I understand they are older now and dont want to be doing this forever, but these posts saying they are 'past it' are just crap. Maybe nostaligia of the 80s is getting in the way, but as a 'new' fan per se, I see a great band making great music. And if they split before I have the chance to see the live, I will be very upset cos I have missed out on seeing one of the best bands in history.

I doubt it's over yet... Remember that the likes of The Who, Pink Floyd, Madness and even Take That have done exactly the same thing...

Until they appear, as a group, issuing a statement that New Order is no more, it's invalid. NO has always had it's spats, fits, bursts and rests...

Admittedly they must be pissed off that WFTSC was a bit of a sales flop, but a full tour of sold out shows tells them that there's plenty of life in the old dog yet!

They've done a lot of gigs these last two years, the most since 1989, and we all know what effect the 89 tour had on them collectively. Time for them to take a little step back from New Order and do some other things for a while, and then come back in a couple of years maybe (if they still want to, it's a bit different now to how it was when they were 33) with some new songs and a whole new load of people desperate to see/hear them, plus the Viking true faith will still be here. In the meantime there will be Freebass, Hooky DJ sets, Digital and Re: Order for everyone to come along and get pissed together to.

  • Are you older than you were 20 years ago?
  • Can you sell out stadia?
  • Did Community 2 outsell Community 1?
  • Can you still squeeze into your skinnyfit jeans?

Them's the questions.

Absolutely no idea about Will's impotence at all, and no real wish to find out! Jimbo's definitely cutting his hedge this weekend, we had to cancel the rehearsal because of it. I am twice as old as I was twenty years ago, if that counts. I can't sell out Blue Saturday, let alone stadia! Phil won't ever sell out, dunno about the others. You'll have to ask the sales force about Community II, I'm not interested as we're not on it. As for the jeans, I can actually fit comfortably into skinny fit jeans nowadays, moreso than I could ten years ago! The wonders of healthy living eh?

Yes please! New Order sign to Colin Newman's Swim Records! And then play a full world tour together with Githead, put out an EP every half a year with just written "NEW" on the front-cover and surely don't take a notice of what the music press would say about it. This would be fun for us - but surely not for New Order 'cause they are too big in the business as a major band now, i guess.

They never never never would think of attempting commercial suicide. Don't even dream of it...

I absolutely agree. I'm also a relatively new fan and haven't had the chance to see them live, and I've felt absolutely gutted since first reading about this. Even more so after finding out that I was thisclose to seeing them at the signing Tuesday.

No reason at all why you'll be attacked, I think everyone bar one blundering unpopular agrees with you!

No way are they past it, simple as that. They constantly get bigger crowds than they did in the UK during the supposed halcyon days (Bournemouth was very much a one-off, there was zero publicity, and in any case I've seen them play to smaller crowds in the mid 80s). You only have to look at Old Trafford and Finsbury Park in 2002, or Hyde Park last year to see that they still have the crowd appeal, all bigger than any UK gig they'd ever done before (Reading and Glasto being festivals that people were going to regardless of who was playing, rather than being New Order gigs, ok Old Trafford was part of the Move Festival, but it wasn't advertised as a festival first before NO were announced, and Hyde Park was always an NO gig first and foremost). Sure the sales of WFTSC may not have been as high as Warners wanted, but since when have record sales mattered to this band? The band who put out records without their name on, when they want to.....

Neworder are to me, the single most important band I have ever come across in my life.

I am grateful for everything they've given me, even the not so good bits. ;)

They will call it a day someday. Maybe now, maybe later.

They're understandably tired right now. Let them work it out for themselves.

I'll be here waiting if they decide to record / gig again.

In the meantime, there's plenty to choose from in their discography.

Stop typing for a while and get listening. You'll feel better for it.

2002 was 4 years ago. I think people were more willing to give them a fair go but relentlessly persuing the same tired old setlist with the occasional, often badly hashed 'suprise' has killed it for many. Hyde Park was on sale on ebay for 2 or 3 quid in a lot of cases, as touts dumped tickets on mass. As you say New Order were far from the only act at Move and Finsbury park as well.

That's not to say that they've been totally deserted by their fan base but as many on this thread have pointed out, it's often the same old faces in their late 30's and early 40's. Hardly a dynamic and changing audience. It hurts me to read the Rolling Stones called out to show an example of why a rock dinosaur hasn't become extinct or someone's mum touted as an example of their continuing appeal.

Of course contrary views are going to be heckled on a fan site but I think some are merited. It's not like it's something the ones who are barracking Blundere for, haven't often said similar to. Of course it hurts to see your heroes rubbished, especially if you've invested a huge part of your life supporting them but there's a reason dinosaurs are extinct.

Hell of a thread - amazing how so much boll**ks can be disseminated by so many to few , we'll fight them on the beaches ..... enough of Winston

Bottom line from my humble little cave - if they go then good luck to them and thanks for the music, the wonderful , enigmatic , sublime music - music which meant more to me than any other band , group , singer or even Man City beating the scum ( and I am sure the same goes for many people here - except perhaps the Man City bit - fair enough ). If they come back - lovely jubbly.

It will leave a hole in my life ( bit dramatic, but that is how I feel ) - but then there is so much to remember over the last 26 years ( plus JD on top of that ) that they will always be around in some form I am sure.

Final thought - thanks to ipods you can at least carry the whole of NO around in your pocket - that'll do for me !!!

I hope they have finished.

I'm gonna buy a nice pad in South Kensington with the cash I'll save :shades:

It's funny you should say that, because I always felt that they put life in my hole, so to speak. And now, like you, my hole will be vacant.

Incidentally, that's a top first name you've got. Has a really classy ring to it. Dunno what it is, but it chimes like the music of the spheres....

I cant believe they are still as stupid as they were in the past. Unless they are comfortably rich, if they were going to split then surely they would do a farewell gig in Manchester with all the publicity and at least they would go out with a golden farewell.

Blunderer wrote: The majority of New Order fans from the past accept this.

Where? I haven't seen anybody even half-agreeing with what you've said on here.

What you basically mean is "well all my mates from back in the day agree with me" which is entirely different to it being 'the majority'. Can you present evidence the majority of New Order fans 'from the past' accept this? Go on then, you want us to justify our arguments so I presume you won't have any problems justifying yours.

I've levelled this critisism at you before - without getting personal - but how the hell could you possibly know what the 'majority' of New Order fans all around the world think? You were wrong with the "No New Order fans in the 80s were also into DM" and you're wrong now. I'd love to know where you pluck these crass generalisations from. You're like the worst type of football bore, you're not into it for the tunes, you're into it to be 'part of the crowd' which explains your narrow-minded view. I mean, how could anyone possibly disagree with you? You were there, after all.

As Jarvo has asked (at least twice now but you've refused to answer) which bands do you consider cutting edge or hip these days? I'd really love to know as well. People who tend to follow "hip" trends are vacuous wankers anyway.

Sometimes it seems there are no new order devotees on this site. And what does it mean that they arent relevant anymore. What is relevant these days, crap like Fergie and Blue October. Sorry I am just not buying this argument. To me, WFTSC was a great album, and like it or not, its different than most out there. That makes their music relevant to me and that is all that matters to me. These guys breaking up has had me upset for the past week and I can only pray that the rumor is a lie. But don't call them to old to succeed or irrelevant because its simply not true, each of them are musical geniuses. I am sure some of the older people from the UK will have something smart to say in reply, but i just had to ask, what is relevant?

What is relevant?

Maybe they're not on the top of the charts, or their videos are not shown on MTV, but does that mean they are not relevant?

They are relevant for me, I started listening to them only a year ago. And WFTSC is one of my fave albums ever. That album is the reason why I became a fan, so for me they are relevant. As simple as that.

I don't care if they don't win Grammys, or perform in stadiums, coz their music is as amazing as it always have been.

I agree with Daytrippera. NO rules and the last two albums are so far away from almost i've heard in the last 10 years new bands.

I never gave a shit what other people in the herd liked. If my favourite band plays to 800 or 80,000 makes little difference to me ultimately - as long as I can get near the front at the shows. As long as it's relevant to me is all that matters.

New Order are like Kraftwerk in many ways to me, they were from a different plane of existence when i first heard them. The world may have caught up with (or 'copied the fuck out of') them since they started, but it doesn't make them any less original.

You don't need to go to gigs to love NewOrder. I've seen them live a few times and that's enough to make me a happy man.

I'm not keen on gigs, but I'd still be gutted if they said they were calling it a day for good.

I also don't remember them selling out 5 nights at wembly or whatever even in the 80s. They always played smaller places didnt they? I dont know why people would be shocked that stadiums of people aren't turning out, well they never really did, they're not that sort of band. And they are getting huge crowds anyway, o I don't see the logic of that argument!

Face it, although this years tour was, in my book, pretty crap, its always been about the live stuff for years, certainly the 8 years i've been watching them. Thats why, if or when there are more gigs, i'll still bloody turn up even if they are doing the same old drudge.

I have been a fan since 1986 and have seen then whenever i could.

I have been through the dark days of no new new order and don't fancy facing that again .

If I'm repeating anything has said before then sorry but I just thought I'd give my own views on this subject. If this is the 'end' of New Order then naturally I'll be gutted as they've been a part of my life for nearly 20 years. I personally think they've got 'one' last album and tour - maybe in relation to the release of Control, before calling it a day. However as many of you have mentioned if this is the 'end' as sad as this may be for us, life still goes on and we have to face some facts about the position the band has reached and the personal lives of the members within it. With the exception of Phil Hooky, Bernard and Steve are +50 years of age and given the ways in which as musicians they've influenced and changed the popular music landscape over the last 30 years do we really want them to end up in 'ageing rocker' territory with the likes of U2, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Status Quo etc. or even worse end up doing dodgy 'Here And Now' gigs with b******'s one-hit wonders from the '80's. This and likelihood of them being labelled a poor man's Rolling Stones possibly explains the 'old guys of the neighbourhood' comments and Hooky, Bernard, Steve and even Phil's feelings about the future. Furthermore like what many of you mention we don't know what influence (pressure) Warners is putting on the band. If Warners consider WFTSC to be a flop - a No.5 album in the UK which has yielded one Top 10 and two - possibly three if they'd released Turn, Top 20 singles then I don't know what the band would have to do in order to live up to their demands for 'success'. IMO Warners aren't the worst offenders but the 'major' labels have a trigger happy habit of dropping an artist when they're no longer in the Top 10. If they have been dropped they could carry on down the 'indie' route - by themselves or through another label. However as some of you mention they've achieved so much musically anyway and with with the exception of Daniel Miller's Mute Records - technically owned by EMI, is it worth their while given they wouldn't achieve the positioning they currently enjoy with Warners within today's ever shrinking popular music marketplace. I don't think its exhaustion, acrimony or strain after the current tour which is prompting this call it a day talk as IMO they seemed to be enjoying themselves, each other and performing at the gigs I saw them at this year. They do deserve a well earned break from touring and promotion of WFTSC over the last two years and I think this is the only thing they're realistically thinking of doing right now. There have been other bands I've been gutted about calling it a day - for example Leftfield and Orbital, but the 'end' of New Order for me will be a sad time regardless of how right/wrong this may be. However we all thought it was the 'end' in the mid-'90's and I'd sooner see them bow out on a high when they're at the top of their game than continue touring/recording and become irrelevant middle aged parodies of their New Wave, Electro, House and Hacienda youth as a result. My advice is just enjoy what Warsaw, Joy Division, New Order, Revenge, Electronic, The Other Two, Marion, Monaco and Freebase has given/is giving to us - singles, albums, tours etc. and whatever they decide to do I personally wish Hooky, Bernard, Steve, Gillian and Phil all the best for the future. Cheers!:thumb:

Thief Like You wrote: Dunno about you lot but I think that NO are big enough (as people)to be upfront about it and announce to a live audience if a tour was going to be their last. Not to say I think they will - I just think they have the balls to do it and personally I'd appreciate that very much.

You probably don't remember Reading 93 then, Barney saying something like "don't believe what you read in the papers, if we split I'll say it" to a relieved audience... yeah, right, all he said for the following five years was "we haven't officially split, but we haven't plans to meet in the foreseeable future". Even Rob Gretton was annoyed (it had become a phrase more common than Hooky saying "it's like coming home for Christmas"), to the point of gathering them in 1998 and asking "Look, I've been offered loads of money for Phoenix [then moved to Reading], have you fookin split or not??!". And they went like "err, have we? dunno, well... let's do Phoenix, take the money and see what's next...". That's the balls of New Order, and this time there's no Rob to wake them up, though I trust our Andy... he probably won't let them get away with such a finale for their career, I hope he'll manage to make them do a "live and unreleased" compilation, promoted by a final small tour with a last date ever in Manchester, at least...

Mick Aneworderfan wrote: You probably don't remember Reading 93 then, Barney saying something like "don't believe what you read in the papers, if we split I'll say it" to a relieved audience...

Er, wasn't that quote actually:

"Don't believe what you read in the papers, even if I say it".

I always assumed that was Barney distancing himself from the almost-libellous "Michael Jackson played with me" lyric he inserted into the Reading 93 rendition of True Faith.

Don't think that particular quote had anything to do with the 93 split.

Ally you're right about the phrase, it was "even if I say it"... I thought the words were "if we split I say it" but I remember having doubts about them at the time though I haven't checked much lately, just thought the meaning of the phrase was that... I don't know if he really was talking about anything else anyway... I just remember he told the NME they hadn't split and he was misunderstood in some other interview and made a sort of official statement to tell fans to wait for the band to say if they split instead of reading speculations on magazines... that's why I though those were the words even if they sounded strange (but I thought he was just chewing some bits) and I still think the meaning of the true phrase could be referred to that, also because the audience responded with roaring cheers... though that happened with the most of Barney said, he could have said "I prefer grey trousers to blue jeans" and the audience would have cheered anyway... :D

If NO remain signed, it'll be as a prestige act - much like The Stones and so forth - a band kept on for its back catalogue. Sadly, the modern business model of music labels operates in this fashion, and finance and cashflow of labels is all aimed at quarters of profitability. The days of a long term career are gone, if your second album isn't a hit, you're dropped. Quite how a Top 5 album isn't regarded as a "Hit", I don't know. I would have thought that by this point in their career, NO would've got some decent accountants in and become near autonomous.

It has never been more obvious that music is a commodity. Working a few years at Tower Records taught me that. Trust me when I heard about the K-Fed CD I just thanked my stars I was not in the record business anymore.

Quite a few musicians are lousy business people. Remember that NO took a a cut in their normal royalty rate to get owed royalties on their back catalog at Factory. The Hacienda was a money pit-as brilliant as it was. Their profits kept Factory alive. NO created great music, are probably good people, but their track record is that they are probably not great business people

You know, if Morrissey packed it in tomorrow, and Kloot packed it in on Tuesday, and Doves packed it in Wednesday, and Editors packed it on Thursday, and REM packed it in on Friday, and just for a kick in the teeth, Gabrielles Wish and Puressence packed it in next saturday, I wouldnt sit here and cry about it, because i'll find something else!

just why i am justifying myself to somebody who has been alive for less years than i have been a fan. i don't know it won't happen again.

For fuck's sake, boys, give it a rest. You both sound like a pair of prize twats.

And this coming from somone who's life is 90% spent wanking over the thought of Liam and Ron engaged in frenzied naked mud-wrestling soundtracked by "We All Stand".

Have i beenm promoted from "mostly a cunt" to "prize twat" then?

About New Order going back to indie, I don't really know if they'd want to do that, they got used to a major status, I'm sure Hooky would release New Order on LTM, but Barney moved Electronic to Parlophone even before Factory's end (though it was very close). Anyway the main problem could be the back catalogue, I'm sure Warners would let New Order go to Rough Trade for their next album, but no way they'd let them go away with Unknown Pleasures and Technique, and the band wouldn't probably move without them (how could their do the next "best of" without their catalogue?). I think we're just back to late 1993, they won't take any final decision and just do something else for a while (i.e. side projects) until they need the money again, if that ever happens... after all they should have enough to live their remaining years (hopefully many, but hardly more than 50) and the kids are growing up, it's not like 8 years ago... Speaking of kids, is Jack still around? He must be laughing a lot on this thread, it would be nice if he made us know any relevant fact though as I said it's just happening nothing, officially... I mean I don't think they have daily meetings to decide whether they're splitting or not, things will evolve slowly...

Don't think that particular quote had anything to do with the 93 split.

Never heard that theory before. Suffice to say, it was solely to do with the split rumours.

El Jarvo wrote: Never heard that theory before. Suffice to say, it was solely to do with the split rumours.

I thought it might be a likely theory as on the Electronic Ecstacy boot he says it just after True Faith finishes.

But I just checked out the complete soundboard recording (inc Dream Attack + BLT) and he actually says it after Bizarre Love Triangle so the MJ theory seems even less likely.

Ah well  Sorry (both) Mikes!

Maybe New Order won´t release a new album ever. But I´m certain Barney and Hooky will still get wonderful tunes in their head and they will definitely continue making songs out of those tunes. Then in the Itunes world when a global release is just a click away, we will be able to download those beautiful future songs whatever the name of the artist will be. We will still be hearing Barneys great voice on new tracks for many years.

I don't want it to end

If I had thought that it might be the last time i'd see them live, I would have paid far more attention at the gigs I attended in October.

No, you were right, I misunderstood the words, though our Jarvo says I got the meaning of the phrase so it's alright, we can be friends, everyone is happy and New Order won't split. Happy ending. :D No? :confused2: Anyway never ever link my name again with that horror puppet Jacko's in whatever way or a lawsuit will follow...

it would be the very best reason to never release a "best of" again...

I just registered today on this site and it's got be the worst news I've heard. Really hope the Buenos Aires show was not the last gig ever.

Missed them when they were last here in Toronto in 1993, but I did catch them in the summer of 1989. I haven't seen New Order in 17 years. :(

Hey now Exciter was good, Ultra was a great album, also they had to get used to producing an album without Allen Wilder who was very tough in the studio. I Agree though if New Order find them selves in a spot and feel old then hey call it quits.

Someone has mentioned what can we tell from an interview that has been translated. People... I've read the interview in Spanish... it's clear. No more No. ... certainly for a while.

But let's keep in mind that the last time New Order was interviewed by the same newspaper, they said sth like "we aren't visiting Argentina". Ehem..ehem..

Well, they'll do something. At least this takes any pressure off. Whatever happened to the 'so-called' second album from the WFTSC sessions? Yeah, not so prolific after-all I guess. Maybe Barney can hook up Johnny Marr again. Heck, this presents all kinda' possiblities and they can STILL get away with it. There must be a certain expectation being New Order that I can imagine getting tiresome. They look like they can use a rest.

I rather them call it quits now than put out mediocre albums. If they go out now, they go out pretty near the top. How much can any one fan expect? I'm cool with whatever they decide. I thankful for the plenty I got. They delivered big, and often.

I'm still unsure if this is true, like some others. I just got into NO/JD last year... :(

a) as someone mentioned earlier, they've released two cracking albums this decade that piss all over (in my opinion) both movement and republic.

b) if they had split years ago they wouldn't have created these albums or my favourite NO song, here to stay.

c) give them a break! they're 50-year-old men. it's more about having a good time. thank christ they don't do pyrotechnics and light shows like some aging rock bands.

d) hooky's comments to the bouncers at liverpool were far from karaoke. they may play the same songs over and over, but there's bound to be a surprise in there.

and thus ends my opinion on new order.

I thought they broke up in 1983 - damn, you mean I've missed something in the past 23 years...

time to catch up :read:

Good point, well remembered.

Blunderer's very first post here hankered after a golden era when Barney would tell the soundman to fook off, or summat.

Should imagine Hooky ticked that box nicely in Liverpool. And then some.

I really dont think that NO are breaking up...

They are actually quite relevant today. They have influenced an entire generation of new bands. LCD Soundsystem, Juan Maclean, The Killers, The Bravery, Hot Chip, the Faint, everyone one of these bands has been pretty heavily influcned by New Order.

WFTSC sold pretty well, went top 5 in the UK, and I thought it was an excellent album. I read a lot fo positive reviews for it. I loved it! I listen to it a lot, more than any other album except for Technique and Low Life.

They just completed a successful sold out tour of the UK and South America...by all accounts they were great live.

I saw them at Chicago 05, front row. They were brilliant. Just smashing.

I just wathed a ton of pro filmed footage from NO's headlining performance at Personal Fest...supposedly thier last show...

last show my ass! The audience adored them and was cheering hard for them! Look the the footage. Barney is dancing like a madman, Phil is smiling, dandcong, and pmping his fist while playing his Keyboards, and Hooky is giving it his all!

Great show.

How could they quit after that.

They take a year or two off, then theyll release a great album, and do another mini tour. Theyll have a final show in manchester, then theyll call it a day.

I hope.

Im 24. I live in COlumbus, Ohio, USA. Ive been madly in love with New Order since I was 13. They inspired me to make my own music

www.myspace.com/ZacheryAllanStarkey

so they are pretty fucking relevant to me. :)

Zak - That Solitaire tune is pretty ace. You need to sort that daft barnet out, though.

Judging by a few recent interviews, surely the band has taken the "god-like genius" label far too seriously? I mean, it was just an NME (who know good music nowadays, don't you know) award meant to promote the new album, after all. It deliberately gave Warners something to slap on the cover of WFTSC to move some more units. And it gave the NME the ability to look back and say "Hey, we featured these fellas back when no one knew them, so we still have hipster credibility up the wazzoo for championing bands like the Arctic Flunkies." Nothing more.

Here we go again. Close your buttock cheeks, El Jarvo, coz I know this hurts you, but, here we go.....

From the heart of the lion's den.....

From a Lonely Place....

THEY ARE FINISHED! THEY SHOULD HAVE SPLIT YEARS AGO! THEY ARE A SHADOW OF THEIR FORMER SELVES! THE GIGS ARE LIKE KAREOKE!

The majority of New Order fans from the past accept this.

Some of you need to wake up and realise this, you really do.

Does anyone reckon this silly cunt is Fat Bob in disguise?

Nah, I reckon he's a bitter music journo in disguise! Blunderer, please do us all a favour and FUCK OFF!

To get back to the topic of this thread, it'll be pretty shit if this is true. I don't think they mean it, though. I won't be totally convinced until I hear an official anouncement!

Thanks a lot! I put a lot of work into that song, I played everything on it. it usually goes down well when I do it live. TF, as well as Giorgio Moroder, was a bit of an influence on the feel of that song. You should check it out when I get the version with vocals up.

Now, you leave my silly haircut alone. ive had it for eleven years, its part of me....as barney had the same haircut for...well, since 1981. :)

Im really happy that you liked the song. :0

Frankly, I'd prefer some more Electronic right now. Too bad the boys don't have the stamina of the 'Stones.

Greetings :) don't feel bad. There were always rumors of New Order spliting. I was lucky to see them at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. That was their first concert in 13 years! I hope it's not over :( . I went to a New Order/Joy Division tribute party last month, and Peter Hook will be spinning a DJ set Jan. 6th at the Smart Bar. :thumb:

I'm so sad..was too young in the eighties to catch them, they never really came to my city during the Get Ready or WFTSC tour, dammit!

Well, they are right after all. All I wanted is them not becoming ridiculous touring forever like old men resting on their old hits, with 2 or 3 new songs every 5 years; which was becoming the case, actually.

I think WFTSC was an OK album, but with some really useless songs (Jetstream, brrr), which felt like the band was runing out of ideas. It might be the right time to stop, before the legends collapses under the weight of "we-used-to-be-geniuses" albums (e.g. the cure, depeche mode in the late 90s).

And BTW, really waiting to listen to the "3-bass" sound, especially with Hook in the making :)

Like Stephen said, "even the band doesn't know". You know New Order they never know what the future holds for them as a band. That's something I alwasys loved about them. It's definitely the last show for a while.....They'll probably be back in a few years but after that who knows. Next time might be the last time....
