How'd these rumors come to be about the meaning behind the song?
The first is about is possibly being about Ian Curtis and the other about Barney's reaction to his girlfriend (or wife) when she told him she was pregnant.
First I ever heard of these ones.

Over the years I have heard that Blue Monday was about Ian's suicide. Supposedly, Stephen said (at least) the title was a reference to that. Since Ian did kill himself on a Monday.
I thought it was about Falklands, too. And given the material of what the first BM video was based on.
Also, what is "get the message" supposedly about?
I kind of thought it might be a reference to Ian/Deborah's marriage falling apart,at least my interpretation of how him killing himself affected all who knew him esp. his bandmates and maybe more so Bernard, if he was closest to Ian as a friend. Or maybe it was just a reflection of a certain time in the progression of music. I'm probably way off with it, but usually try not to gather a specific meaning from anyone's songs, mostly just what i relate to from it in my own perception of things.
Ian killed himself on a Sunday. The band were due to fly out to America on Monday. But the title comes from a biography of Fats Domino that Hooky was reading at the time. The song has nothing to do with Ian.

yeah, but Stephen said the title was a reference to the whole Ian thing, not the Fats Domino thing. Hooky was probably joking.
The whole thing about the "beach" and all, really made me think BM was about Ian. But then the Falklands thing was a pretty widespread theory for a while, and again, with the video, but that could have just been the song later being used to fit the current situation then.
