New features on NOOL... (updated frequently) — Forum Archive

Apart from one very useless, I was having fun the other day and did that very quickly for fun, it won't probably be used much, but it's a social networking thing like myspace, you can go to a profile and "add to your friends"... yup, useless, but who knows, we might find something to do with that.

But the big one, I spent all day doing this, is the Private Messaging. It's an online messaging system on NOOL, so you can hide your email address and people can actualy send emails to you on NOOL... like most forum systems these days.

You can access it from the main page, and you can send a PM directly to a user in the message area by clicking on the proper icon. You can also do that from any member's profile page. I am considering adding the icons above the forum list when in the forum area, for quick access, though you have some already in the "member centre".

It will be probably very buggy at first, so please do not hesitate to let me know if you see any problem.

Obvious missing feature is a notification when you have a new message... this will be done tomorrow, I'm done for today.

This feature will be enhanced and will conclude my "member center", which will also result in best privacy for those not waiting to give out their personal details.

I have decided to take a break from NOOL v5 to work on the current version and enhance things.

Let me know if you find any problem with it, and if you have any idea on how to enhance it, don't hesitate to tell me.

my only concern is that there should be a facility to turn this off. i know i don't always want to receive pms and then there are those folks who want their privacy and have locked profiles and don't publish their emails. Perhaps it may be a good idea for them not to have a send to facility. well you know that they can send but not receive or only receive from people they choose.

Then just don't read them.

You will be able to turn off notifications, I don't see why it's such a big deal since you can just not check them at all.

Nic, the forums on NOOL are top-rate compared a lot of other sites I have seen, so I'm sure these new features will only enhance the whole NOOL Experience...

Well, I'm working a lot on the "user experience" if you want... I will probably enable blog and picture galleries for all "senior" users, meaning once you will probably reach 100 posts or something similar to this.. though this feature is not used much on here... obviously the issue will be hard drive space at some point, but we're not there.

I am also securing the website. As of today, the database doesn't store the password in the database, which was a clear security hole that was lasting for the last 6 years... this is why the forgot password section changed to a "reset password" section, so instead of getting your password by email, you get a link to reset it.

Let's say I had a training today that convinced me to do it.

One of the next steps will be to enable profile for everybody, but people who decided not do show it, it will show that it's private... there are too many areas in this website you can find a way to access the profile, and obviously it ends up on Google and not many people like that... that and the public email address. Sending an email from the forum will no longer be available, you'll only be able to do that in the profile area, PM will be the primary contact.

I will enhance NOOL a lot in the next week, as I'll have plenty of time to do it... I have a couple days off and nothing planned so far and it's been a while since I wanted to work on it ;)

There's a NOOL V5? Look forward to seeing that (assuming it's not feckin Vista only or something :nod: )

Like the new features, a whacking great button at the top and/or bottom of the page to get to the member centre or direct to the inbox would be handy....somehow that one little bit of the sidebar seems hard to find, well get on screen (or is it just me, I always stare through it :lol: ).

As for notifications, I'd say.....

An "Oi you, mail for ya!" icon ( sod it, use the current mail smiley), that's on by default but can be offed by those who consider PM's to be a plague.

And usual mail notifications, turned off by default I should think.

I mean you could add, skype paging, SMS messaging, telepathy, direct genetic tingling via quantumn paried particles.....and even some strange ways too.....but I think the two above should cover it and be "wee buns" to code.

The site itself runs like a dream these days, in IE, firefox, and especially Opera ( so you must be doing SOMETHING valid :evil4: ) it even looks presentable in Konqueror ( the KDE browser, legendary for having NO idea for what to do when it hits bad code), with and without my "ceremony" sylesheet that I impose on text heavy sites, easy on the eye, though I would not normally use konqueror unless forced at gunpoint these days for any other purpose, yet my brother SWEARS by it and loathes opera.

The only thing is....what ARE those laggy days about?

I am STILL 100% convinced that NOOL is sharing either a machine, or a network storage drive with another, busier site. I have noted on several occassions , faults pertaining to the server simply not being able to respond properly, and/or responding with mere BITS per second and/or...sitting doing absolutely NOTHING for a LONG time, then BANG!, serving the entire page, at once at the capacity of my connection. These things do not seem to cross reference with the number of users online (obviously there are large numbers of unlogged users, but one would assume that the proportion of logged in users to guests is fairly constant so the number of users logged in is SOME kind of guide)...there can be 100's of us and thing FLIES along, r there can be 3 peple and the site is bolloxed. It really does seem like NOOL is suffering someone else's problems.

How much for a better server package?

I did my share of tweaking tonight, biggest is the ability to change your email address is back, but I also put the links to email you on your public email address instead of the one you use to log on, that's one you can set in your profile (it was there, just not used yet)

Let me know if you find some glitches, there are some special features that were not working, such as the custom "ranks", so you'll notice Al Jarvis is now a "Viking" like Johnny Giles and Wenorder is "Art Director" ;) they were there, just not enabled for some reason.

No big deal on that one.

I removed the Community Points, fixed the Member Listing so we actually see the real avatar AND the count of members is now fixed in the stats & member listing (per continent in that case)

A lot of work... but there is nothing on TV and my wife is working, so I'm bored ;)

I resetted the social network (ie myspace hack) thing...it was working at the opposite, so you were sending requests to yourself :p

It's fixed.. well, maybe it is, I didn't test it as much as I should have. One day I'll do the remove part ;)

One feature I want to add is the list of concert you attended... so on your profile, you can see how many gigs you have done, and click to see the list and associated review... maybe friday, another lonely night, tomorrow is hockey time ;)

working over the Holidays! resident 'NOOL Bon Homme Québeçois Saint Nic. Regarding the Hard drive space. If it is an issue why not just set a limit to ie. six- months or 50 pages and erase everything past. If someone is not around for a thread then what is the loss and any questions can be readdressed or answered again. Welcome news for securing the site. Invariably get pharmacy :skeptic: right :nod: offers specifically timed closely to visiting this site.

Another addition...

you can see the youtube button in the message editor, well tag labeled [ youtube ] [ / youtube ] with a youtube URL will transform it automatically in a viewable video.

Ohhhh and whilst I'm here is there a way on the PM thing to keep the names of the people you PM most, easily accessed? I thought it might do it automatically when you add friends but it doesn't seem too....less I'm being a dunce. Cheers

Dunno if it's just me, but I tried viewing a couple of profiles from the Digital Republic forum, via the last message posted by on the main page, and a couple of times my own profile came up, though when I checked it out by opening the thread to view that particular post, I came up with the right profile (didn't try very many of that, but Super Ally's post on the Caption Competition thread came up that way for me). :shrug:

Anyway, all this stuff looks good, tis appreciated very much.
