Hi i saw new order at wembley arena this year and i noticed the keyboards where live. When did they start playin live keyboards again as i thought phill was pretendin to play them.
Rrecently they seem too sound so good live. also is that in alonely place that barny plays a bit of at the end of blue monday at there last gig
Phil does play live keyboards. But in 05, when they started to tour, it was noticeable that he was miming his keyboard parts on Jetstream and Krafty. When NO did the Canal Plus show in France in early 05, They played JET, and during the piano intro, it was obvious that Phil wasn't actually playing, he was miming to a backing track. This was proved later on in the tour when Phil decided to play guitar all the way thru JET, because he didnt touch his synth, yet the electronics sounded exactly the same.
There was some speculation that Phil mimed on Krafty as well, but if he was, that seems to have been corrected, as his parts on Krafty are definately live.
Phil always played live keyboards on the older tracks, BLT, TBTHOG, TF, Temptation, LWTUA, YSF, TF, Crystal, ect. he also definately plays live keys on the Perfect Kiss, and he plays a one note drone on the keyboard for parts of transmission.
it has also been speculated that Phil mimed his keyboard parts for the two times that NO played Everythings Gone Green in 2005.
of course, the fact that Phil would even mime on JET is pretty lame. Gillian made mistakes, but when NO played live, Gillian always played her keyboard and sequencer parts live. Phil is a good guitar player, but technically, he is not actually as good a keyboard player as Gillian. Gillian get a lot of flack for her skills on this site, but I actually think that she was an awesome keyboard player.
I think that the live version of Blue Monday at Personal Fest was one of the best, and I also noticed that Barney played a but of In a Lonely Place at the End. it sounded awesome.
Now, I wonder....
WHat do NO use to operate thier backing tracks? Do they have the backing tracks on a computer offstage?

Basically..what is an Akai blah blah hard disk recorder? Is that what NO have thier backing tracks on? Who operates it? is it a comptuer sort of thing or an actual keyboard?

The AKAI DR16 is a multi-track hard disk recorder. It's not a keyboard. You can think of it as a glorified multi-track tape recorder for the digital age.

How pro are NO? When Phil's XP XPired in Bournemouth, they didn;t even have a backup unit to swap in, and instead started trying to reason with it. I mean really, if you've actually made something with a Roland badge[1] crash, it's not gonna come back any time soon.
[1] excluding the tb303 obviously, and any Juno era instrument with a failed memcell...boy are those FUN.
