You cynical bastards! ;) I'm sure he would be the first to appreciate your humour though. His label has released the records of the half of my favourite bands ever, he has been very kind with me at the Apollo 98, so of course I'm very fond of the man and I wish him all the best. The article does not say what damaged the kidney, I respect his privacy but let's just hope it's nothing serious...
What did Tony do that was so evil? I really haven't heard much of the story exactly. Can someone enlighten me?

he was very bad at managing money meaning that NO were short on cash for their drugs/divorces/yachts etc
Also his inability to keep the bands on factory in order (no pun intended) allowing them to go massivley over budget without really recording anything caused factory to go down the swanny.
other than that he's a charming man, that wears nail varnish and is incredibly vain.
we do owe him a lot for bringing us JD and NO amongst other great bands, they would have got signed by someone else but I doubt they'd have had the creative freedom, just more money.

If I had a spare that was in perfect working order, he'd be welcome to it. We owe Senor Wilson quite a lot, despite his undoubted twattishness and capacity for extravagance at precisely the wrong times, if it hadn't been for his love of a risk we'd almost certainly have never heard of Joy Division, and wouldn't be on this website today!
Hope he makes a speedy recovery!Tony Wilson was responsible for getting the band i love now getting WIDE exposure on GRANADA.Also without his money UNKNOWN PLEASURES might not have been made.Those far off days are now part of history but for me remind of great times in my life.Well done TONY.

and being bad at managing money is why the band has such an issue with him and barney saying all kinds of nasty stuff about him?

Basically AHW (and Factory as a whole) had this unfortunate habit of spending lots of money on random and completely off-the-wall things, such as a twat-shaped office table (!!!), financing Happy Mondays' binges, and propping up the Hacienda when it was losing money hand over fist. Allegedly (and I use that word most strongly, as neither party has ever confirmed this) Bernard's beef with AHW is that towards the end of Factory records, Factory (ostensibly AHW) gave Hooky an advance for the first Revenge record. Factory failed to pay Bernard the advance he was contractually entitled to for the second Electronic album, and Bernard was rumoured to be about £400k out of pocket when Factory went under, and he pointed the finger of blame very firmly at the Factory boss. Songs like Liar, Special and Ruined In A Day are all about this.

So there should have been an album between Electronic and Raise The Pressure, shortly before or after Republic? I always thought Disappointed was a one-off single, but if what you say is true, it might have been a part of a wider project which has been completed only with Raise The Pressure? Anyway I'm happy because they made up, or it looked like that in 1998... I'm sure Bernard has understood Tony was more like a showman than a businnessman. Without people like Wilson or Gretton, we would probably have heard Joy Division anyway, they were too strong and came out at the right time to make an impact, it would have happened anyway, somewhere else. But there's plenty of minor Factory bands I love: 52nd Street, early Royal Family And The Poor, Crispy Ambulance, The Wake, even something by The Names... I don't think we would have heard them if it wasn't for Factory's attitude, all heart and no brain, the instinctive approach to things that comes only with genuine passions. When Factory collapsed the magazines said it was the death of indie as we knew it, I thought it was exaggerated because there were still Creation and 4AD, but unfortunately they were right, just look at what happened to those labels afterwards, and what the music scene had become with the anti-indie spirit of Britpop. It has never recovered and we won't ever see another Factory, other bands as brave as New Order, Happy Mondays, Section 25 or A Certain Ratio. My biggest respect to the man who gave us, with all his faults, the one and only Factory in the music history.
