Hacienda Exhibition - Help Required!

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Hacienda, and to coincide with the Manchester International Festival, Urbis are planning a major Hacienda exhibition.

Although they are at the early planning stages, Urbis want to get a feel for available material that may be out there. Does anyone have any footage or artefacts that could be used in the exhibition?

All things Hacienda, including things such as the whereabouts of fittings such as the old bar, furniture, even the toilets as required, as well as they have any personal ephemera from the Hacienda days that could feature in the exhibition?

Urbis haven’t settled on a narrative, chronological or thematic path through what is turning out to be a wealth of material as yet, so really anything that relates to the club is welcomed. One train of thought is to set the story of the club in context of current events of the day as well as exploring how the influence of the club evolved after closure – although this is a fairly broad brief – they really want to get a feel for what is out there before settling on a definite structure.

So basically any ideas, stories, artifacts, photos, scars are welcome.

Photos of unusual factory stuff in-situ could be an interesting side project too – it might be revealing to see the journeys different memorabilia took over the years.

Does anyone remember the fanzines that were handed out in the queue during the early acid house days? Anyone know where there's scans of them? Orignials? Who made them? Who handed them out? Did any of you work there?

And where is the most famous artifact of all - Tony Wilson's photo that hung behind the main desk and made me jump each time I saw it?

The Tony Wilson photo you are talking about can also be found in the New Order tour program (the one with patti on the cover). I think his photo is on the back inner cover. It's the same one that was in the entrance to the Hac.

I've got 2 unsigned (unused) grey membership cards somewhere,bought them from eBay years ago.

What want is a decent list of old Hac tunes,the 2 compilations that have been out are in truth fuck all like what was played there. I've got loads of the old italian house 12"s in boxes,but the music was much more than that.

'Nude' was all american garage and hip hop with ACR and electro thrown in.

I've got the North 12"s.

FAC 51 5th Birthday flyer, like the one on page 121 of FAC 461 but complete and in better nick.

Were the toilets by Saville Stainless? Any relation to Peter (I have read that it's his family's firm).

You come across them all over the country - very distinctive and have a little badge with the name and the cleaning instructions.

Dunno what all the fuss is about the Hacienda, it was just a club and not a very good one from my recolection.

So that's settled. The Hacienda was no good and everyone who remembers it as the best night out ever is wrong?

I have to disagree, I've been to loads of rave/dance clubs in my time, and the Hacienda always had a certain edge over the others.

Mike it was not just a not very good club, it was also a shite gig venue.

Someone at URBIS e-mailed me ages ago about me sending them some photos for a HAC gallery.Never heard from them again. Offer still stands,I've got some close-up photos of the Order on their Low-Life gig,including a very intimately close photo of Gillian! Plus I've got pictures of Thomas Dolby,and Cabaret Voltaire playing there. I'll get them scanned,and I might finally post them on here!

Maybe it wasn't brilliant for acoustics and the stage was in the wrong place, but it was very impressive and I loved it. Had some great nights out there, liked that you could spend all night walking downstairs, upstairs, along the balcony and the food was good - which is rare for a club - amazing hot choc too!

Didn't enjoy walking into the bollards when drunk though!

I'm looking forward to a Hacienda exhibition at Urbis. If anyone is involved in this keep us posted about when it's going to be on as it should be a good one! Cheers!

Hi All, It's taken me a while to get on here but here goes... I'm putting together the exhibition at Urbis and will be sure to keep the forum up to date with what's going on. Big thanks to everyone who has already replied.

We're looking for a late June/early July launch with a number of teaser events filling in the gaps - including the possibility of a special night to commemorate the actual opening in May...more later.

Monty - apologies for no-one getting back in touch with you but I'd definitely be interested in seeing all of your photos - could you mail me some to hacienda@urbis.org.uk ?

If anyone has anything they think could be used in the exhibition - from official mercendise to the fliers handed out in the queue to personal snapshots - I'm interested. It would really help if you could drop me a line (with photos of your goodies if possible)at hacienda@urbis.org.uk so I can keep up to date with everything in one place.

I've got a couple of Hacienda flyers (Christmas '88), Northside (plus 808 DJ's aka Spinmasters and Paris Angels), plus something from the 1990 US 'tour' (Mondays, 808, etc). Probaly got a whole load more (whilst collecting stuff on 808/Gerald/etc, so more non-808 related Hacienda flyers somewhere in my room)! :)

These are the ones in question (I can get better scans, but am currently in Telford away from my scanner until Thursay/Friday):

ive got the official first birthday poster knockin about somewhere,along with fac51 pin badges and paper match books,also got membership cards ect and the first birthday invite along with various other shite. as for the hac being shite? was it fuck.

Also included are two clips that are potentially of more interest - one is footage of the inital building work (set to Video586 by New Order) and the other is a clip of the various non-Factory bands that played there and some regular club night footage from 80's, before it got famous and all the girls had enormous hair and ra-ra skirts (set to Cool As Ice by 52nd Street).

Random memory: a guy running around like a chicken at Flesh. His back appeared to be covered in brightly-coloured feathers. On closer inspection, he'd stuck the fingers from about a hundred pairs of marigolds onto the back of a waistcoat. It looked fantastic!
