Has anyone noticed in 'Mesh' the main percussive sound apperars to be a schoolboy flicking a ruler on a table and moving it forwards very quickly? Go on, have a listen! Ah the strange things you notice staying up all night attempting to write essays...

i like the noise at the very beginning. is that gillian? it sounds like something barney would do.
The song is actually mistitled on the "Substance" album (where I presume you were listening to the track from). Its correct title is actually "Cries And Whispers".
"Mesh" starts with a Peter Hook bass figure..... 
Hurrah ! At last someone else who know which song is is which.
Cries & Whispers = 'ship sails out to sea...' Mesh = 'Nobody even tries to find out...'

For what it's worth, I downloaded something called "Cries and Whispers" from AudioGalaxy (where nothing is as it is named) and it sounds like an outtake from Public Image Ltd.'s "Second Edition" record.
Time to consult the ultimate resource...worldinmotion.net's discography.
