Hurry! Your mp3 player requires that you choose one selection from its drop-down "Genre" menu to attribute to all New Order tracks on your computer.

In a perfect world, of course, New Order would be filed under "Top 40." Do you choose "Electronic" (despite "Run Wild" and "Way of Life")? "Dance" (despite "Rock the Shack")? "Pop" might have fit once, before the boy bands ruined it for everyone.

Please clearly indicate your answer, supported with evidence from the recordings (500 words or less).

It's a tie between Christian Gangsta Rap and Negerpunk(the latter just because I have no idea what is)

Why?(in five hundred words or less) BECAUSE I SAID SO!!!

this won't be as cogent and concise as i'd like, seeing as it's only 9:30 on a Monday morning, and my brain probably won't be functioning anything like proper until around 3:30 Friday afternoon... :evil4:

i'd place them under the overarching tag of "Rock." it's an all-encompassing tag, and such subgenres as "top 40" and "pop" and "electronic" as you'd mentioned earlier, along with a whole host of others, fit into it as a broad category.

so too one could argue with the Order's music. because it encompasses so many different stylistic variations and nuances.

but i hate genre-ising, so perhaps i shouldn't even play this game. :D

BTW, Gnu and anyone else interested: some friends and i have put together a mix CD swap. international participants are welcome; the deadline for registration is 10th May 2002, and details can be found here. should be a fun and mayhem-filled time...

We could, but we wouldn't want to.

Funny you should mention, 'cause so much of Husker Du's music is what I'd call straight-up "pop." Fuzz it out all you want (e.g., Jesus and Mary Chain), but they're still perfect pop nuggets of pleasure.

Kraftwerk influence aside, there are tons of reasons not to classify New Order as an "electronic" act.

P.S. What's your middle initial, JNak? (for anagram purposes)

 yes. add all the Big Muffs and various other stomp boxes you want, but a pop choon is a pop choon all the same.

middle initial is "L." and is in fact the start of the only "normal" name i have. ;)

Dammit! I really could have used an "A."

I wish some more folks would weigh in on this "genre" question. I think it's funny that the recording of any nu-metal track on the charts today involved more electronics and computer hardware than any Kraftwerk record ever did.

 do i even want to know what you're making me into an anagram for?

(for the record, via the Brunching Shuttlecocks C.Y.B.O.R.G. game, i came up as "Journeying Artificial Nocturnal And Killing Individual." i think that was fair warning. :violent2: )

and yes, it is indeed funny to consider that particular nu-metal quandary. certainly much more funny that considering nu-metal on its own. ;)

it's even funnier to me to consider the state of "rock" and "r & b" today, and then to go back in time and examine where this rift happened...

(that's funny strange, not really funny haha. :) )

at this point in time, though...i think all the sub-genre-ising and sub-sub-genre-ising has pretty much made the notion of genre-isation rather outdated, to be quite honest. hence, why earlier i went with a much broader category. in a way, the broadness means more in a comparative sense (i think) than the specificity would. especially with a band like the Order, who is so multi-faceted. or at least were, at one point. ;)

plus, i think people should be encouraged to make decent music, period. not decent examples of their "genre." it's marketing department musical ghettoisation, and we don't have to take it! :violent:

...er, sorry. will be over here now, quietly drinking my vitamin water. :D

Perhaps if you have a minute you could explain that to the club community, purveyors of Dance, Trance, Goa Trance, Trancecore, House, Happy House, Hard House, Acid House, Deep House, Progressive House, Jungle, Drum & Bass, Darkwave, IDM, Jump-Up, Hard Step, Tech-Step, Hardcore/Happy Hardcore, Ragga, Darkside, Trip Hop, 2-Step, Garage, UK Garage, Speed Garage, Ambient, Ambient Jungle, Techno, Electro, Breakbeat, Progressive, Big Beat, Disco, Eurodance, Hi-NRG, Nu-NRG, etc.

For example, "I went to the club the other night expecting to hear some Old Skool Jungle and the DJ starts slipping in all this Darkwave shit."

...well, obviously i need to drink something stronger if i'm going to start this debate with proponents of all the various dance subgenres you noted above.

or we could solve this problem another way, you know. :violent2:

:angel2: quite seriously, though...there's a point when it stops being useful for descriptive purposes and starts being niggling pedantic bullshit. i'm still not entirely sure where that exact point is, but with the tracking devices i'm currently using and a few well-placed flares, i should be able to find my way there and back and give a full report at such time as i return. ;)

I suppose Pop/Rock is as good a category as any, although going with Alternative would keep one from mistaking New Order with Aerosmith.

I went to House of Guitars in Rochester, New York quite a few years ago. In the basement they had about 185 billion records and tapes...sorted BY CATALOG NUMBER ONLY. What a nightmare.

...i remember hearing an interview where Barney said nearly the same thing in regards to categorising them, actually.

and as an "alternative" to Aerowank? certainly. but i hate the term "alternative," too. cos it seems so...calculated. ooh, we don't have a name for this! we can't keep calling it "college rock," can we? and it doesn't fit in with our MOR AOR schtuff, our "Urban" schtuff, or our "Oldies" schtuff...aha! :nonono:

that store does sound like a nightmare, indeed. i understand the need for some sort of categorisation and/or labelling in some instances, but like you pointed out with the various splinter factions of clubbers everywhere...there is a point where it just becomes ridiculous.

one of my coworkers knew someone who was an obsessive Factory collector, actually. used to get many Factory releases as they came out, would play each only ONCE (long enough to record onto audiocassette), carefully put each away in catalogue number order...and how would he file each audiocassette?

under its respective catalogue number, of course! no need for any other identifiers, such as band name or title of the work in question...nope.

now THAT is insanity dedication. :nonono:  ;)

That second Sugar album (F.U.E.L.) is such a disappointment to me though, almost like Baab Mould ran out of ideas after Copper Blue. They were also the most terribly boring live band in the history of guitar music. At least Grant Hart live shows were entertaining !

how about EMO? hey, kids are gullible

Porno Groove is the term baby! Why? Because I downloaded some NO song and that is the term that popped up in the description space.

Ask anyone in Factory or New Order and the answer is obvious, they were/are/always will be a punk (or pooonk) band.

I'd like to believe that, and I submit for evidence:

  1. If they're stinking rich, it doesn't show.
  2. They still seem to be struggling to play their instruments.
  3. Peter Hook's low-slung bass is pure punk.

categories are useless once you know how to find their records in the record store and once you don't have to describe to everyone what new order sounds like. categories are only important when you're trying to explain to someone what new order sounds like. but all in all, categories are not an accurate representation of how the music sounds...but it gives them an idea. question, who do you compare new order to (for description purposes) that is not an 80s electronic band? a current band that the younger generation would know?

Exactly. Who gives a stuff about pigeonholes?

(unless you're a deviant with a penchant for shafting small feathered creatures of course....) :D :D

...so would now be an inappropriate time to burst into song with "i feel feathery...oh so feathery...all my plumage is standing up taaaaaaaaaalllll..." ;)

oh, i see. sorry, then. :D
