The best club choon EVER? Probably!!

Hi fettlers,

Here at the centre of the universe (Glasgow, Scotland) I found my sweet self tonight in a club (The Shack) with one Cheeky Monkey and one J******* SHH!!, you know who!! ;) Anyways good ol' J gets the DJ to play Blue Monday, and funk my Funky Monkey, is it not STILL the greatest club choon in the world, EVER! The young un's were swingin' it like there's no tomorrow and us auld gits (and I exclude Cheeky Chops from that term) came over all goosepimply with nostalgic pride, recalling how great it sounded in the good old days when we were ourselves still young pups.

So fettlers, is Blue Monday the greatest club tune ever? Or is this slightly dazed Moonbeast just talking a load of old Billy The Fish? You decide. Impressions, opinions and observations below please.

P.S. It's now 5.10 am here and I SHOULD have had my beak at the grindstone an hour ago. C'est la vie!!

Yes, to me it is one of the best club tunes ever!

THE ORIGINAL 12" IS A BIT RAW TO BE PLAYED FOR CLUBBING BUT GRANTED THERE ARE SOME VERY GOOD MIXES...

Indeed, as was mentioned on the board a few weeks back, Erick Morrillo played Blue Monday at Sankey's and it sounded awesome. I'd never heard it played in full on dance club before and it was like finally hearing how it was MEANT to be heard. Fitted in seamlessly to the rest of his set too, which I think shows how timeless it is.

I actually think both the rawness and retro value add to it's club appeal. Even nowadays when a top jock drops it in a 'trendy' club playing the latest dance choons, it still gets a better reaction than anything else.

I did the same thing at a party last week, and the crowds went mad. When it`s played next to the utter shite that we were forced to listen to by the "DJ", it sounded even better. (Although in truth I was suprised that he still had BM in his records box... It was out the same time as him!)

Yeah, we said the same thing last night, it was by no means out of place amongst the modern stuff. Truly the sign of a timeless classic. J was saying he debated about Blue Monday v's Bucks Fizz when he was at school, his argument being that in twenty years time they'd still be playing Blue Monday in the clubs and BF would be long forgotten. How true! I'd say they'll STILL be playing it in another 20 years.

By the way, have you and the Livster sorted out who gets Barney the Breasts yet? That bath of mashed potato is still on standby if you need it! ;)

Haha, am loving the Bucks Fizz-v-New Order arguement Although I can see where J's schoolmates were coming from - Barney and the gang didn't have those fantastic velour sweaters and velcro skirts, did they? ;)

Hold that mashed potato for the moment - I'm not going to be fighting our Liv for ANY fella.....

Saw Erick Morillo about a couple of months ago at Bugged Out in London. Very impressed.

Saw Erick Morillo about a couple of months ago at Bugged Out in London. Very impressed.

Mmmm, his night at Sankey's was one of my best ever :D Ended the evening with an announcement that he's going to be doing a monthly residency from now on - my mate from Leeds (big Back II Basics goer) was not happy! Think he's next back Jubilee weekend - may have to get myself down there if I can find sufficient funds :)

Ah, the minute I saw your thread title I knew you weren't talking about "Afternoon Delight" by Starshine Vocal Band! Yeah, I fucking love Blue Monday, especially in a club setting, though I have yet to make a foray into such an establishment, as most of the clubs near here cater to country and western (I'm reminded of the "both kinds of music--country AND western" joke from Blues Brothers, and how appropriate it is for my little slice of hell). At any rate, I think Blue Monday still has the same power it had in '83, though I'm not saying we need a "Blue Monday 2002" version (and god damn Orgy's souls, their version goes down better with the 'goth kids' who've never heard of Ian Curtis or even the Cure), but it certainly would be most welcome at any club I visit in the future.

I still have the notes and the exact statement I made to the debating society at Bathgate Academy in August of 1983 was as follows;

"...you can take Bucks Fizz out and shoot them in the head because they had/have little or NO current relevance to the world of modern music. They will still be playing that record ("Blue Monday") come 2003. It is a work of genius..."

Here are my top five in no particular "order".

Blue Monday - NO Looking From A Hilltop - Section 25 Rain (12") - The Cult It Takes Two - Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock Erotic City - Prince

"Blue Monday"? Naah - I'm sick of hearing it now. It's like you know all them DJs that do these cheesy discos up and down the land will be guaranteed to possess only ONE New Order record in their entire collection - and 99 times out of a hundred it's guaranteed to be that one. Even the old "indie-discos" we used to sort of frequent back in Gateshead or South Shields as teenagers, we'd go up to ask the guy to stick a NO record on, and it always turns out to be "Blue Fooking Monday"....so because of that - and that only - I hate the bastard now.

And bands that do crappy cover versions of it too deserve a good kicking as well....!

Whilst Blue Monday is one of the best dance tracks ever released I wouldn't go as far to say that it is the best. Here are a few I think are better (in no particular order):

Stardust - “Music Sounds Better With You” The Chemical Brothers - “Hey Boy Hey Girl” The Chemical Brothers - “Star Guitar” Mighty Dub Katz - “Magic Carpet Ride” Underworld - “King Of Snake” Basement Jaxx - “Where’s Your Head At” 808 State - “Pacific” Lil Louis - “French Kiss” Sneaker Pimps - “Spin Spin Sugar” (Armand Van Helden’s Dark Garage Mix) De’lacy - “Hideaway”

I could probably name ten or twenty more but after that I'd be struggling.

Hmmm, I'd say out of those only French Kiss and Pacific State were out and out classics they're all pretty good but we're talking about Blue Monday here.

I've just listened to Blue Monday and I still stand by my claim that it's one of the best but not the best. Musically Blue Monday is excellent although the absence of a high point is a problem (that's why I never really got into Saint Etienne - their tracks started in a certain way and carried on in that vain until the end rather than building up to something). The reason why I think Blue Monday isn't the best dance track ever is because the lyrics and the vocals don't uplift you in the way that other tracks (and particularly house tracks) do. I know Blue Monday's lyrics and vocals aren't meant to be uplifting but dance music at its very best does give you a feeling that lifts you out of the real world for a few minutes.

I think there are three things that make a dance track a classic. The first thing is an intro that builds up the anticipation and then releases it in a huge rush (like "Hey Boy Hey Girl", "Where's Your Head At" and "Born Slippy"). The second thing is a break in the middle that has a similar effect (like "Music Sounds Better With You", "French Kiss" and "Star Guitar"). The third thing is an irresistable groove (like "Music Sounds Better With You", "Hideaway" and "Spin Spin Sugar"). Blue Monday has a few irresistable grooves but it doesn't tease you in the way that other tracks do.

No argument against here! Have only heard it in a club twice, but it was still a grand experience. Hell, I'm still happy when I here BM on the radio!

A Saturday night at my favourite club last October, the last half-hour of the night. What do I hear coming in? Blue Monday! The whole place went mental to it; everyone, myself included, was screaming and jumping all over the place - it was fantastic. So yes, I reckon Blue Monday is the best club tune ever (or at least, one of the best).
