LOW-LIFE RE LIVED

See, this has opened up a can of worms. Feel like I can review a NO album without even being here. I thought Republic was shit hot, what about this classic Low Life? gonna need some time out with this one, the further I delve into New Orders underbelly the darker it becomes, pls don't let me out./

An incredible one, perhaps, but whether it prevents people killing themselves is debatable?

Republic is room temperature shit by the second half of the record but Low-life is a quite nice, it's like a very good record really. PC&L was more life saving for me, or maybe the orange puffy special edition of Republic would help save you in a flooded situation

I had bought LOW LIFE on cassette, and freakin' Love Vigilantes couldn't have sounded more uplifting and relevant to my life at that time. It was the very first time I have even heard New Order...I was already groovin' on Joy Division. Low Life is only a record, but often times music can change somebodies life. In this case it kept me from doing my best Ian Curtis impression. I truly feel it was a God-send in the middle of all the BS I had to go through.

I love Low Life. IMHO, its a far better record than PCL and Brotherhood.

where is LOVE VIGILANTES??

My personal favourite,quality,classic N.O.,& the album I would play to define what they all about to someone who had never heard them before.Almost perfection

Can I just say, if an album that prevented an ICON like ROCKET mick from topping himself it must be ok. If however he said Republic stopped him from 'doing the off' then he might as well have just done it.

Tough to choose between LowLife and Technique. I think Low Life is slightly better.

This is going to seemlike betrayal....

But I dobt care for Love Vigilanties that much,,

Low-Life, the climax of NO. Great albums before and after, but definately their defining moment for me.

Low Life. Great record, could have been much better.

Ditch the truncated Perfect Kiss and add a ballsy version of Let's Go (whether the full length TPK would fit in with the rest of the album is hard to tell, but the edit is not good). Add some better production. Then it would truly be a masterpiece.

^ - Or then compile your own Low-Life from the live versions and there you go.

First NO album I bought

Low Life to me was the album they almost got right, but ended up botching. Possibly the strongest set of songs they'd written in one batch, with four having emerged gradually throughout 1984 (with STYT rearing its then ugly head in December 1983) and the other four appearing at the start of 1985, they obviously weren't happy with it even up to the very end, hence the errors, omissions and bungled edits. I don't mind the shorter version of Perfect Kiss so much (apart from the wide left/wide right panning at the start). I can understand them not wanting two instrumentals on there, and their feeling a need to edit Elegia down to a more manageable length, but Let's Go should have been on there, they should have finished it at the time rather than leaving it hanging as a demo. Let's not forget they also had Skullcrusher available, yet another instrumental! Combine that with some tuneless singing and rather dated production, and it doesn't sound as good now as it did in 1985.

For me, the songs always sounded better live, only Love Vigilantes sounds right on record to me. For me, Face Up evolved too far, from a glorious early incarnation to something I couldn't bear the thought of by late 85. Sunrise got wimped out by the production, they lost the guitar fury. STYT was much much better live than on record, as was Subculture, and I will never forget the first time I heard the sequenced TTON tracks blaring out at the front of the stage, so much more impressive than on record. You need to hear a good soundboard version of this, and turn it up loud!

this was probably the last order album that i grew up with "live " listening to most songs at gigs ,,perfect kiss was great live though hooky claimed the shortened album version was due to wanting to make up the album songs ,which i took to mean it was just going to appear as a single ,not both. this then gives an insight into how they felt about(the quality of) songs like skullcrusher and lets go which they didt bother to compleate .individually all the songs still sound realy good ,,l.v and sunrise especially though cant play the album whole non stop for to long. would agree the production sounds dated , but remember it as realy fresh when it came out .lyrically barney seems to be enjoying it!

and life was just an open book.

I love Loew-Life, but I still have to place it behind Technique and Brotherhood.

I think Technique has more feeling in it than the others. You can tell Barney's pain from his divorce in some of the songs.
To me, Brotherhood is more even than PCL.
All in all though, one could make a good case for any one of the three being their best, IMO.
