good thread - started in 1985 or 86? onward

power corruption & lies brotherhood substance - all on cassette (i didn't have the foresight to buy in vinyl) -

then touched by the hand of god & hand of dub on vinyl - I remember feeling very 'internationale' buying my first imported vinyl, it has a little "made in england" sticker on it - 1987 factory - d'ya think its increased in value? - paid $8.99 for it back then

then the peel sessions 1st & 2nd session on cassette (rec 1981, released 1989)

then everything, when released after that -

Nope...I'm a sad excuse for a moderator, eh?

thinking back...there are only a few things in my collection that I can really recall when and where I got them...

WFTSC was purchased from the Target I was working at on release date here in the States...I actually got my paws on it the day it came into the store, which was several days before the release date on Tuesday, but the bastards wouldn't let me buy it early...but I do recall a certain giddy feeling when I first saw it, sad, but true...

Get Ready-I had already purchased the UK version from some online place, but still picked up an American version on the day it was released...played around with the display at the Target I was working at back then so that it displayed prominently...and it still sold one copy...

Republic-pre-ordered from RPM records in Garland, TX...Randy, who owned the place had it here for me the day after it was released in the UK, and he shit a brick when he saw that it was on London...

Blue Monday '88-I swiped this one from a Wal-mart in Balch Springs, TX because I was flat broke and had to have it...lucky for me I didn't get caught!!! just realized, I haven't a clue when I got it though...

Substance on CD-purchased from the same Wal-mart that I later stole the BM88 disc from...I had it on tape already, and fuck knows where that one came from...purchased it on 2 January 1988, because I had just got a CD player...

and I do remember that PC&L was the first thing I purchased...but I didn't pick it up until 1984...got it on a slab of vinyl at Sound Warehouse in Mesquite, TX...

after that, everything is kinda hazy...

A friend who worked at a record store played me the 12" for Perfect Kiss along with Lowlife in 1985. I liked it but it hadn't quite clicked yet.

Bought Brotherhood on cassette in November 1986 after seeing Bizarre Love Triangle on MTV and being blown away. That winter a friend loaned me copies of Lowflie and PC&L.

Bought Substance on 2xcassette (import) in the fall of 1987, then started going back and buying the CDs. I had Movement, PC&L, Brotherhood, and Substance all on disc by Christmas. PC&L and Brothrehood are both the first run of Factory discs with the car carry case. Somewhere in there I also got 1981-1982 on 12" and the Chapter III bootleg.

Bought Lowlife on CD in London, summer 1988.

Fall of 1988 I figured out who Joy Division were and bought Substance, UP, and Closer all on import CD. UP has the car carry case.

I was all caught up by the time Fine Time came out in late '88, and from that point on I bought everything at the time of release.

How the hell should I remember this?

Something like

Substance (in 1990) Low-Life Technique Brotherhood Power, Corruption and Lies Republic (1993, first new one) Movement (the next day of the Toronto show in 1993) JD Substance Best of Rest of Permanent Heart & Soul Get Ready 20 years of New Order International Still Closer WFTSC Singles

But after Substance I got "Electronic", so...

And I still don't own Unknown Pleasures... because everything on it is on Heart & Soul.

Closer (April '03 when I was 14 and didn't have a clue about NO but my then hero Nicky Wire about the manics recommended it) Substance (NO Jan '04 after being dumbstruck by True Faith) Technique (Feb'05 a year later after a recommendation from an old NO fan on the York City forum) Power Corruption and Lies (Apr '05) Republic (Apr '05) Waiting for the Sirens' Call (Sept '05) Brotherhood (Oct '05) Lowlife + Get Ready (Nov '05) Movement (Dec '05) Substance (JD Apr '06) Unknown Pleasures (Dec '06)

Have still yet to really listen to Republic and Get Ready beyond the first 2 or 3 tracks.

I got all mine in the order they were released, same with the singles. Usually on the day of release too, sometimes before...

Working in a record shop for a while helped
