New Order too "parochial"??

Anyon else catch the story about the "24 Hour Party People" screening at Cannes the other day? All the poncey euro film critics were gathered for the main event - it's up for the Palme D'Or, for God's sake - only to make a hasty exit because they didn't understand it. Apparently they were streaming out in droves: how fucking punk rock is THAT!!

Same report claimed Tony Wilson spent the entire post-screening press conference hurling abuse at the cast and production team: partly because he's apparently a bit pissed off about his portrayal, and partly (one assumes, this being Anthony H.) to draw attention to himself. Sounds like fun, though.

Speaking of Mr Wilson, I see he has his old job back presenting Granada Tonight. Haven't seen him yet, but apparently last night was hilarious - he kept making offensive comments and cocking things up!

"Parochial": can't be arsed to look up the dictionary definition, but in the context of the story I've just recited it means its all based on a defunct record label in an English northern town in the 70s/80s, on people your average Cannes type has never/will never hear of. And, y'know, they swear a lot, mostly don't have degrees and talk in funny nasal accents. And they make - God forbid - pop music. I guess it was far too clique-y for them: as I consider myself (and, by extension, virtually the whole of the onliners here) part of the outer circle of that clique (hey! We were paying their wages!!), Cannes can pucker up and KISS MY FOOKIN' ARSE!!!!!!!

most such "awards" are all royal heaping crocks of absolute shit anyway. occasionally something decent wins...but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. i don't believe any of them unless i've heard or seen for myself.

'sides. Cannes gave the Palm D'Or to Wild at Heart. of ALL of Lynch's films...why that one?!??! that's one of his WEAKEST!

"Wild At Heart" won because it's so relentlessly clever-clever, and that's what Cannes goes for, unfortunately. Fave Lynch? "Lost Highway" - funny, sexy, scary, beautifully shot and wonderfully atmospheric. An dit does make sense. Er, eventually.....

"24 Hour Party people" should win: after all, it takes on all the big subjects - life, death, love - and all the fun ones - sex, drugs, pop 'n' roll and wraps 'em all up in The Greatest Story Ever Told. And where else are you gonna see ACR on the silver screen??
