Im just getting round to learning how to play bass. I was jsut wondering how the hell does hooky sort out his fingers to play high notes like he does on ceremony?

It's a six string (probably).

I still think Hooky's a much better bass player than Adam Clayton, or Flea, etc.

(Sorry, for anyone who disagrees. Feel free to throw shit at me. )

Nope, it's a four-string. Playing high notes on the bass is easy, that is, if you play with a pick. If you play with fingers, don't bother working in Hooky's style.

You can do OK with your fingers, but you are defp better trying to get it right with a pick and using fingers later when they've gotten stronger and groovier.

A bass with a neck that's not hugely rounded and thick, as well as not being able to drive a London bus between the strings and fretboard make playing high up a lot easier.

And errrrm...it's hard to play 6 note chords on 4 strings, and I can assure you a standard tuned 4 can't hit anything LIKE the top notes in things like elegia or YSF. Mainly a 4string, but the 6 is never far away.

Fair points, except my 24-four fret 4-string can do YSF no problems (I think, haven't played it for ages)

Ceremony is eaaaasy, although I remember when I was first learning I thought I'd never be able to play it

OK, true I think both mine can do Ysf and all.

Yeah Ceremony IS like that isn't it, it must be learning to hold 2 stroppy strings down at once, and once you can do it....SHOWTIME :D

Insight and 24 hours are big fun too cos you don't have to go so high (if your bass is not conducive to doing so) and you get to make that huge drone string noise.

I find Insight a bit boring to play. 24 Hours on the other hand is the business.

Lately I've been playing Subculture and the outro to Close Range. :thumb:

*hides* (yes, sorry I have to agree with jack here, tanner.)

plus, the whole vertigo bass sound, reminds me a little too much of hooky's. but of course, i mean, adam has out front credited hooky as an influence and hooky's said good things about adam. but there are a lot of JD ripoff's, in some U2 songs *hides again*

also, i think the cure's bassist tries a bit tooo hard to copy hooky's bass style. well, not just bass. lol. take a listen to The Walk (direct rip off of Blue Monday, and BM was before The Walk.. so it obvious the Cure copied, NO. pfff), In Between Days, and uh... Just Like Heaven. lol. and this other one that reminds me a lot of the beginning of New Order's "Sunrise". lol.

but i still like the cure. heh.

It's well documented that U2 were big Joy Division fans and Hannett did produce them as well. Have not the Irish millionaires lapsed into Transmission and Love Will Tear Us Apart during gigs recently?

Hooky began to play higher up because his amp at the time struggled to be heard over the others when playing low down. His sound is quite in your face and much copied. There's been a fair bit of discussion here about his style and how he got his sound. Don't get them started on the Clone Theory pedal or you'll never hear the last of it!

will from echo and the bunnys said around 82/83 that even hooky doesnt know how he gets his sound as all his playing goes in a "bin" gets distorted and the end result come out.. yup magic!

bass king.

Sounds about right.

Not that such things are open to analysis but one could say that the magic of JD and NO is down to all of them being unconventional players i.e Morris played like no-one else did at his first audition, likewise Hooky and even Gillian was chosen for her lack of ability rather than because she was great. It's weird to think that any band now would choose someone who couldn't play hardly because that was the thing they wanted in a band member! They said that they preferred that because then she'd not be able to influence them.

Seeing as they're all quite adept musically now, would that mean that they'd not recruit someone who was a duffer now? Where does that leave Phil?!

After 30 years you could say they should be masters of their instruments.

Yup! They owned up to it quite some time ago, although it could said that their more interesting music came from a lack of technique rather than their later technical efficiency although if you spend thirty years doing a job, it's enevitable that you might become good at it! :)

Hooky played ceremony on a 4 strings bass, of course! And it isn't particulary hard to play. Like all NO bass lines. But use a "mediator"- i don't know if u use the same word in england ?

Good points there. Theyre early work is certainly more interesting, different, less convential. I think Barney is king when it comes to playing on one string!

the songs, chords, may be simple in regards to the music, but its the way that its played. not everyone can just pick up an instrument and put it into color like that. i say that about all the members of new order.

like i've always said, for a band thats had no real training, they can sure as hell, take simple notes and turn them into pure magic. so...

no one does it like the Order. :D or the hookster.

YEAH and it's true ,as well, for any band . U can give an amp and a guitar to any people u want, they can't do exactly what the genuine, former band did, first. It's obvious.

There are bands that choose people in spite of, or even for, lack of ability. Beat Happening is a great example. That's probably the best thing from the punk era that's been passed on: the idea that you don't have to be a wonderful musician to be creative and do things in a memorable fashion. Since the drummer from my band left to focus on film studies, I've had to place ads specifically stating, "no more than four years experience" because too many drummers can't appreciate staying on the main beat.
