The Perfect Kiscography

Ok, Mr. Disco, I have another stumper for you.

I have two UK TPK 7" singles, one with the big 123 on the label of both sides, and the other one with a big 2 on the b-side. According to this (and other) discographies, the one with the big 123 on it is a promo issue numbered FAC 123-7, and the other one is the regular issue numbered FAC 123. So far so good; all that matches up with what I have.

However, here and elsewhere the track listings on the two singles are reversed from what I actually have. FAC 123-7 (big 123, promo) has the 4:49 album TPK and 5:09 TKOD while FAC 123 (big 2, commercial release) has the 3:51 TPK and 3:00 TKOD.

The photos on the TPK page confirm this. The regular UK 7" label says "Edited by Ivan Ivan" (not me, heh). That's the 3:51/3:00 versions. The promo does not say that; it's the regular 4:49/5:09 versions.

So, might the track listings for the two singles be reversed in the discography?

I'm pretty sure the shorter tracks were made for the promo. After all, the 3+ track was the radio standard... I haven't listened to my 7 inches in ages, but I believe I recorded the shorter promo one to CD a long time ago.

Perhaps you could have a mixup of labels. It is known to have happened. What does the groove notation say?

FAC123A says: "That's soul folks!" FAC123B says: "Feel it's a hottie", it also says: "Townhouse"

7FBN123A says: "/FBN 123-A//57765-1" 7FBN123B says: "/FBN 123-B//57766-1"

Chronovisor, can you compare the version of the A-side of FAC 123 (not FBN 123) to the version on Low-life? (It'll be apparent immediately if they're different.) Also, does your FAC 123 say "Edited by Ivan Ivan" on the label?

Big 2 on b-side: (a-side) FAC 123 A3/That's soul folks (b-side) FAC 123 B3/Feel it it's a hottie/Townhouse This is the standard (non-promo) 7". It has the 3:51/3:00 versions by Ivan Ivan.

Big 123 on both sides: (a-side) FAC 123-7-A/LYN-15645-2TH/Z (b-side) FAC 123-7-B/LYN-15656-2TH/Z This one is the promo. It has the standard 4:48/5:09 TPK album and dub versions.

Here's why I don't think there's a label swap: the one with the big 2 says "Edited by Ivan Ivan" on the label, and you can see this in the photo on the TPK page. Those versions (which are very different) don't appear anywhere else, so they seem to jibe with that notation on the label. It wouldn't make any sense for that label to be placed on a single with the common 4:48/5:09 versions.

That leaves us with one of three possibilities:

1. The "big 2" version is really the promo and the "big 123" version is really the standard release. If so, this would be inconsistent with the photo titles and the stock numbers in the discography, as well as my memory of buying the "big 2" version in a store.

2. There are multiple issues of both the standard and the promo. Seems unlikely, but it could happen I guess. I do find scratching on FAC 123A3 curious -- perhaps that stray 3 suggests a third issue or something?

3. The discography is has the tracks on the two backwards. I'm still putting my money on this one, but it would be interesting if we actually discovered that there are in fact multiple versions.

According to TLVs discography www.niagara.edu/neworder obviously two 7"es with the 123 on the flipside label are existing, marked with a *, and yours is the "Lyntone" one, as the groove notation says. I don't have any of these mentioned ones, but hopefully this excerpt from TLVs discography clears something up to you.

My suggestion: try to buy them all, at least you'll know you got both the regular and the promo copies

If it helps, the A3/B3 references mean that both sides are the third cut done. This doesn't necessarily mean they would be the third issue since the first two cuts may have been discarded at the test pressing stage and not issued.

I know for a fact that there were many cuts done for The Perfect Kiss 12", they may have done the same for the 7".

My two copies says the same. Unfortunately, I don't have a turntable so I can't check the tracks. The tracks "look" longer on the Big 123 though...
