Can someone shed some light on where the fook this song bears any resemblance to 'Leaving on a Jetplane',cos I can't fookin' hear it.In the same way,are The Scissor Sisters going to be sued by Elton for completely thieving 'I'm Still Standing' for 'She's My Man'.It's the same fookin' song!!!! :banghead: :thumb:

Dunno, but the first time I heard Run (the day Technique came out in the US) I thought it sounded like Leaving on a Jet Plane, so there you have it. And a friend of mine once sang the lyrics to Leaving on a Jet Plane over Run while we were listening in the car. The melody of the verse really is pretty similar (though obviously not identical -- it's about as close as the guitar riff in "Come As You Are" is to that in "Eighties," which Killing Joke in fact sued Nirvana over).

I think it's a little stupid -- Run is certainly different enough to be called its own song, and it seems unlikely that they consciously nicked LoaJP -- but the resemblance is close enough that I'm unsurprised there was a problem.

I have read how supposedly the band was sued and that was why Run 2 had to be withdrawn, but that never made much sense to me -- if Run 2 had to be withdrawn because of violation, then wouldn't Technique have to be reissued without Run? (I'm just wondering, I know nothing about the suit.)

It's pretty blatant to me. Not just the guitar riff but the vocal melody which is the same as Denver's main melody.

Technique wasn't their greatest album for original musical idea, was it? Just Like Heaven?

I don't think the lawsuit stated that Run2 had to be withdrawn, just that it should never be issued again - hence why it's Run on The Best Of and Singles and not Run2.

About the same time there was an 'accident' at Factory HQ and the master tapes for Run2 and MTO were 'damaged'. Coincidence?

Absolutely,as much as it pains me to admit that N.O. have plagiarised anybody,All The Way is extremely similar to Just Like Heaven, but in terms of sounding similar,Run & LOAJP are completely sonically different,& nowhere near as copiest as some I've heard over the years  :thumb:

There is some similarity in the vocal melody - but, come on...I'm not convinced that just becasue two songs happen to have the same basic, simple, sing-song la-di-da vocal melody that one is a deliberate copy of the other.

The fact that NO went through the bother of hiring two different musicoligists to try and prove it wasn't a copy shows that they thought they had honestly written an original song.

You don't want to mess with John Denver though - rub him the wrong way and HE'LL CUT YOU!!!

Ok, but the question still stands -- I would have to think that from the point of view of Denver's people that there's no difference between "Run" and "Run 2". So why was Run allowed to continue to be issued on subsequent pressings of Technique and new compilations, but Run 2 was prohibited from being reissued? That just doesn't make any sense.

I think they're allowed to press Run or Run2, they just have to give John Denver royalties.

Run2, the single, I think was always meant to be limited edition and didn't have much to do with the lawsuit.

btw, I know before John Denver died he had some legal problems - he went psycho and threatened to slash his wife with a knife or something. It was parodied on a local show where John Denver was shilling his new album 'Buy My New Album...or I'll CUT YOU!!!!'

It became a bit of a catchphrase. I was just looking for this online but I can't see any mention of it anywhere...I couldn't have imagined something like that...?

Maybe because the lawsuit was brought a long time after Technique was released and it was too late to get it removed?

I don't know, to be honest, sounds like a comprimise was reached.

The only similar case that I can think of is Happy Mondays had to remove Desmond from their first album because it was a total rip-off of Ob-La-Di. Maybe The Beatles' lawyers had more clout than Denver's...

That makes much more sense to me, and confirms my memory of when Run 2 appeared in my local import record store, they put up a sign that said "limited edition".

Now someone needs to go fix the Wikipedia and the footnotes on all the discographies.

I'm sure that's right meself,Run2 was definately only meant to be a limited edition, the lawsuit came about quite a while afterwards.Which begs another point. Why is the Run2 so easily available, even now, when it was supposed to be a limited edition?? A Factory ploy to get a hit? That worked!! :thumb:

If it's so easily available, show me where I can get one for cheap...huh, not so smart now are you tough guy?

For me there really isn't enough difference between Run 2 7" and Run album version exclude Run from the lawsuit.

The film clip to Run is actually Run 2. Just don't go telling John Denver's estate.

It pains me that I actually once recognised Leaving On a Jet Plane which was being played by a pub band merely by the guitar riff.

This is always mis-interpreted. Technique came out with Run on it, Run 2 was released intentionally as a limited edition 12" single (20,000 if I recall), just as WFTSC was in 2005.

It was a while after that the Leaving on a Jet Plane thing happened.

There is still no logical reason why all the greatest hits compilations have never featured the single mix of Run 2 when 'Collection' did on DVD. I'm guessing the lost master tapes tales are true!

Don't think I've ever heard Run2. What's different about it? Never been a fan of the Technique song though to be fair, in fact it is in my NO bottom 10.

Run appears on Technique.

Run2 was the limited (20k) 12" single release with a few 7" promos. (I have the 12" signed by Hooky from defunct CD shop "Compact" in the old Arndale.)

Compromise made with Denver who is now credited as part-writer of Run.

Run & Run2 7" are very similar. There is a guitar riff which is moved up in the mix quite a bit on Run2.

Run2 12" extended mix is more of the above riff & a syn drum intro.

Run2 12" is one of my favourite Neworder tracks - hunt it down & give it a whirl.

Same on Brotherhood - where have you heard the bass riff from As It Is When It Was before?! :evil4:

Has 'Run' been mislabelled on the 'Singles' collection? It says 'Run 2' but it sounds no different to the Technique version.
