Tribute Bands (Off Topic)

What do you think of tribute bands? Has anyone been to see any? Who of, were they good? Is there a New Order/Joy Divison one that anyone knows of?

Last night Kezzie and I ventured into Manchester to see "The Jamm", the tribute band, and were both pleasantly surprised! They were actually bloody brilliant. The lead sing was very Weller-esque (well, i would have done him! lol), he disn't just look like him, and have the bog-brush hair do, he was exactly like Weller, with his head movements and stance. Unfortunately Bruce Foxton was rather like Lovejoy or David Dickinson (off Bargain Hunt) but still, the sound was spot on. They played a right selection of tracks, old faves like "Going Underground" and "Eton Rifles" and some less popular tracks like "All Mod Cons" and "English Rose", not to mention a storming verson of the Batman Theme!

Just wondering if any of you have seen any tribute bands recently and what you thought? I saw a U2 one a while back and they were good, even better than the real thing! (ho ho) - which isnt tough i guess! lol.

Im sat in work again, with "Mr Clean" running through my head... cracking night last night....

I don't mind 'one off' tribute bands .. Where they only do one show. But not really into the bands that constantly travel all over the country making money off songs that they didn't write ... We have tribute bands in Oz like 'Seattle Sound' who do the grunge thing (Nirvana, Soundgarden) but nothing exciting like a New Order tribute band ...

Indeed The Jamm were quite splendid. Not a massive Jam fan myself, but I thought they sounded really good. Good points were the fact that they played Bitterest Pill and giggling at the middle aged blokes down the front reliving their youth, bad points were no Beat Surrender, and, (I don't know if you noticed this Liv), faux-Weller's raging bald patch Spoilt the effect a little bit!

Still, I must have had a good night, cause I'm feeling shitty now! :D

The Manics covers band Generation Preachers were excellent, but the best tribute band I've ever seen is The Beatless, who are so good it's amazing. If you ever get the chance to see them, make it a "must do" :)

Had a look on the Jamm website this morning (quite good actually) and there were some pictures of the band, and the paul Weller-a-like was sooooooooo old up close! I know Weller himself is knocking on a bit, but jeez, some people abuse the priviledge. lol! I did notice the baldy bit, but was in denial....was also quite busy looking at the random bloke stood next to me! lol!

Jarvo....still need to sort out what im going to perform at the NO nighty... havent got the foggiest, dont know if i can actually sing yet! you'll have to put me to the test in Paris and see what you reckon?

There was a NO tribute band called Blue Order who played at Nice n' Sleazy in Glasgow a few years ago. Didnt go and don't know of anyone who did.

I usually try to steer clear of such 'tribute bands' if only because there's a difference between doing a couple of covers and doing A WHOLE SHOW OF COVERS, all songs by one artist nonetheless. That said, I would be intriged if any tribute bands mimicing one of my faves came to town.

Mentioned this before, but I got a big kick out of a tribute band to Wire's Pink Flag, of sorts. When Wire reformed and came back in 86, they didn't want to play any of their old stuff, so they hired a band, called Ex-Lion Tamers, who played Pink Flag in its entire running order, and everybody went home happy.

Here in Middlesbrough we have more than our fair share of tribute bands - some passable, most however pretty dire. There is already a few pretty crap Nu-metal type ones knocking around (always a bad omen), but frankly I'm sick to the back teeth with them - we had to endure a pretty piss poor ska band at one of our rallys once - doing shit covers of old Prince Buster, Specials and Selecter tunes...that pissed a few of the more diehard fans off that's for sure. Me? I just laughed and had a few more jars.... Mostly, tribute bands are just lazy bastards - why don't they write their own fooking songs for a change? :D

Put it this way, no really interesting bands have ever come out from here at all - Bob Mortimer is probably the most famous person (met him too once on their Smell of R&M tour - he's top - a real funny little bloke!), but apart from Middlesbrough FC, there was no other reason for me recommending other people this place as somewhere to visit!

there's a brian wilson tour coming up & his backing band is a beach boys tribute band. guess thats a pretty good endorsement...
