I am a newbie but long time fan. Can anybody tell me what is the inspiration for the song 1963 or simply anything about it. it has been one of my favorite since I heard it the first time.

Thanks.

Oh dear. Only the most asked question round here.

This is supposed to be from Barney's pen, but the logic is flawed as Marylin was already dead.

Is there a way to just pin a few frequently asked questions and answers to the top of the board for newbies?

FAQ's only work on the clueful. While it may have helped our friend here, it would still be pissing in the wind for most of them.

To be honest Stephan (and welcome to the madhouse by the way), we don't know a definitive answer, there have been so many permutations. Bernard's "explanation" was in the scan that Ron posted above, but it's typically factually incorrect and the lyrical content is so ambiguous it could be about anything. Given Bernard's penchant for random rhyming (parasites and literacites anyone?) and penning the obscure/nonsensical, it's probably not about anywhere near as much or as significant as people would like to think. The date is probably arbitrary, it just rhymed with January.

Funniest/saddest thing is that Bernard won't remember it either! He'll probably deny ever having written the song, that's the latest one he's been coming up with on other songs, and it's not just him ;).
