A bit of a strange move in the band's history. After seeing the video, I thought it was a bit tacky. The song is catchy and enjoyable, but it's just kind of bizarre the circumstances - being the English Soccer Anthem and the lyrics are about soccer..I dunno what to really think of it.

FFS! Its just something you'll never understand unless you are British and into football.. At the time it was the coolest thing in the world; it made English football anthems cool again. Bands now compete for the honour of doing the football song, and only one has since come close, and they were only a band plus a couple of comedians.

Lets just say its New Order, but its not New Order. But its football, deffo.

As for strange move... well it was a popular and natural move at the time, and made the band excessively cool. Any regular goer of big NO gigs in giant venues at the time, understood the footie game style atmosphere and chanting.

Unless you're a proper footie fan you just won't understand.

It is pretty damn funny/absurd just to think back to Joy Division and Factory, and ten years later they have a silly football pop anthem going to number one... you have to at least appreciate that

the remixes are a lot more listenable thou

Well its not, and wasnt at all over here. As i said, different world. At the time it was extremely cool. 'Silly' it was not. AND it held Elton and Luciano Pavarotti off the Number One spot for a week.

And hell we nearly won the competition

I always had a fondness for this single because it was released about the time of the birth of my first child. Hope and promise of a better tomorrow.

Yeah, dream on....it's never gonna happen unless you get another dodgy Russian linesman and a crooked crossbar.

Song itself is alright for a footie song but crap as a NO tune. For a real class footie-related tune, check out the 'Official Colourbox World Cup Theme'.

Well, Saville did say that it was the first time that New Order "came out of the closet as individuals". :evil4:

World in Motion, to me, seems a bit like a publicity stunt. The song's pretty good, until the soccer team actually start singing along too. One of the only New Order songs I skip over.

At the end of the day, it's essentially a twee Other Two instrumental with lyrics penned by K. Allen.

As has been often mentioned... sub-standard New Order song/half-decent football song.

Such A Good Thing (despite naff lyrics) is much more of a band effort and overall good tune by comparison.

As Ally has just demonstrated, that should read 'English' and into football.

Apart from that, you called it spot on there.

It was the coolest thing to happen to English football ever. It also happened in the middle of the coolest time to be English and in particular to be a Mancunian.

English football wasn't half as embarrassing as it is now, either.

Definitely the best EnglandNewOrder song. :evil4: I actually genuinely love it. Words, piano, surging keyboards during the fade-out, the rap. Funnily enough, the last time I was majorly into football was Italia '90.

Yup. If there was a trophy for just qualifying you guys would be laughing.

And if there was a trophy for qualifying, actually believing that you've got a cat's chance of winning it and then being shown up as the third-rate footballing nation you are by getting f**ed out in the Quarter Finals (again) you guys would have been given the trophy to keep by now.

I like it, however i do prefer Three Lions....

Funny my three favourite bands have all done England songs:

New Order - World in Motion Lightning Seeds - Three Lions Echo and the Bunnymen - (can't remeber what it was called, but it was woth OCS and the Spice Girls  )

just to interrupt the post whoring from the scotch people here, & as someone who genuinely doesn't care how the engerlish footy team gets on (prefer rugby & we're the current world champions at that) was reading stuart macconies book cider with roadies & he says he can be seen in the video for this - anyone spot him?

my better half says that new order doing this made her completely change her opinion of the band, lets just say they wouldn't appear on the sub zero section of the top gear board any more in her eyes

Do you think they might have done it to piss people off? I always kind of pictured it as a middle finger to the goth/indie/punk kids.

A sunny, patriotic, sporty dance-pop song - what could possibly piss them off more?? it was so Un-Punk that it was more Punk then anything - if that makes sense.

'Goth/indie/punk kids' never really formed any significant part of New Order's fanbase though, so why bother?

I think it's a good tune myself. Surprised people think it's 3rd rate New Order. Chop and change the lyrics to be about drugs or make vague references to relationships and I'd have thought most people would've thought it was a classic in the True Faith mega-pop mould. Maybe not, hey?

I like it. And I'm really glad it fcuks off the Jocks!

Up there with the best footy songs. Probably the height of their popularity. I remember, a little while back, being at a reunion from my old job and one of my mates asked the DJ to play New Order for me, cos she knows what i'm like. Normally the reply you get in Newcastle is that they've got no New Order but can play Kylie 'Can't Get You Out of My Head'.

Anyway, he stuck on WIM and dedicated it to me. I was mortified but most peeps were loving it.

Look, the Punk sensibility is not a style of music but doing exactly what you want and not caring what other people think.

They did WIM knowing it would alienate some of thier older fans but they did it anyway because it was what THEY wanted to do. So, yeah, it's not outrageous to say it was a Punk sensibility that led to WIM. "True Punks do dance music" - obviously the band doesn't think that's incredibly dumb because they printed it right in their own album.

So what, exactly, is just so dumb about that?

Maybe you're just having a bad week or something, I dont know - but I can say without any exaggeration I've never seen anybody online get so riled up about something so trivial. Either way, I'm not wasting any more time arguing about a freaking pop song from 17 years ago, FFS...

Having just got back from Rome, had it stuck in my head for the past four days, owing to seeing the Carabinieri evry 10 minutes (on the streets, I hasten to add, it wasn't that sort of holiday!) It's not their best, but by no means their worst, and as a snapshot in time brings back good memories... And it's also NO at their POP! best, any band who can write a footy anthem that good and still retain a degree of coolness mus be pretty special...

Scotland have played at eight World Cup Finals — including 5 consecutive tournaments from 1974 to 1990. They have missed out on progressing to the second round three times on goal difference: in 1974, when Brazil edged them out; in 1978, when the Netherlands progressed; and in 1982, when the USSR went through. Despite playing at eight finals tournaments they have actually qualified on nine occasions but the SFA declined to participate in 1950. Not too bad at all for a country with a population of circa 5 million, hardly, oil and water, more like whisky (a quality single malt) and water!

England on the other hand with their population of nearly 60 million have only managed to qualify 12 times, a mere 3 times more than the Scots despite their huge population advantage!More a mix of cheap gin and water (gin being of course the Dutch national drink, before the English nicked it from them).

And in Euro 2008, while Scotland:bow: were beating the world cup holders France: all England could manage against the lowly Moldavia was a miserable draw! So nar-nar-nee-na- nar! :)

WIM ain't absolutely not one of my NO favourites... It's something i 'd compare to an exercise ... Of course the song is popular, even if u're not an english football 'fan. C'est entrainant, ok but very far from what i like the most in NO material . It's danceable, alright - i really don't like when the ex-football hero sings...Really not - the end is an hymn, if u want, but my favourite NO /JD'hymn has another name : it's called CEREMONY. With a deep impact 4ever.:thumb:

Absolutely - Colourbox submitted it to the FA and it got rejected. Would have been the coolest one ever, but no lyrics, so that fans can't sing along. That was so long ago - 4AD records if I'm not mistaken...

It would still make a great backing track for any event now!

The best mix is the Subbuteo mix "Call the Carabinieri!" sounds like Shaun Ryder.

Isn't there an alternative take with Peter Beardsley rappin?

Yeah I read that Barney had some tapes tucked away with Waddle, Gazza, Walker and Beardsley all doing the rap. Barnes one outshone them all (not surprising as 3 were Geordies).

Only we didn't win it! Johansson, the then Swedish head of UEFA changed the rules and we had to play the game on neutral ground. Strange how Sweden were in our group...?! The 3-0 bye rule was subsequently re-inststated not long after...!

No Holiday wrote: A bit of a strange move in the band's history. After seeing the video, I thought it was a bit tacky. The song is catchy and enjoyable, but it's just kind of bizarre the circumstances - being the English Soccer Anthem and the lyrics are about soccer..I dunno what to really think of it.

J

Sorry for the late reply. I just read the thread now. Anyway...

I love the song! The 2002 single sleeve has been my wallpaper in my PC and mobile for the longest time! Why? It covers two of my passions, New Order and football!

The English noolers here are right. You have to love football (or what you call soccer) to understand how much that song means to the country.

I love football, eventhough I came from a country wherein football is not popular. So whenever international competitions are out, like the world cup, euro qualifiers, etc., as an "outside" fan (my country is one of the worst in terms of international football), my love for this song and of course for New Order, I always cheer for England. Even though I know there are nations who are stronger than England, and more popular superstars (my favorite football players are R. Carlos of Brazil-Madrid and A. Shevy of Ukraine-Chelsea formerly of Milan). Whenever England is up against these countries/clubs, thanks to the song and of course, the artist, I always cheer for England, and... the English Premier League as well.

About calling it a strange move, I call it a brilliant and lucky one. You have to understand that even the band loves the sport.

"We're singing for England... We're playing this song..."

And everytime I watch England in international competitions, win or lose, I normally play the song after watching England perform. There's something magical about this song.

And lastly, about the music video (the original 1990). In my opinion, its not that bad nor good as well. I don't know. I think it would be better if they just showed goals, goals, goals, and nothing but goals of England. Not the band singing with the players. It's just my opinion.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!

Indeed!
