Thoughts about World In Motion?

A bit of a strange move in the band's history. After seeing the video, I thought it was a bit tacky. The song is catchy and enjoyable, but it's just kind of bizarre the circumstances - being the English Soccer Anthem and the lyrics are about soccer..I dunno what to really think of it.

FFS! Its just something you'll never understand unless you are British and into football.. At the time it was the coolest thing in the world; it made English football anthems cool again. Bands now compete for the honour of doing the football song, and only one has since come close, and they were only a band plus a couple of comedians.

Lets just say its New Order, but its not New Order. But its football, deffo.

As for strange move... well it was a popular and natural move at the time, and made the band excessively cool. Any regular goer of big NO gigs in giant venues at the time, understood the footie game style atmosphere and chanting.

Unless you're a proper footie fan you just won't understand.

It is pretty damn funny/absurd just to think back to Joy Division and Factory, and ten years later they have a silly football pop anthem going to number one... you have to at least appreciate that

Well its not, and wasnt at all over here. As i said, different world. At the time it was extremely cool. 'Silly' it was not. AND it held Elton and Luciano Pavarotti off the Number One spot for a week.

Song itself is alright for a footie song but crap as a NO tune. For a real class footie-related tune, check out the 'Official Colourbox World Cup Theme'.

Well, Saville did say that it was the first time that New Order "came out of the closet as individuals".

World in Motion, to me, seems a bit like a publicity stunt. The song's pretty good, until the soccer team actually start singing along too. One of the only New Order songs I skip over.

Apart from that, you called it spot on there.

It was the coolest thing to happen to English football ever. It also happened in the middle of the coolest time to be English and in particular to be a Mancunian.

English football wasn't half as embarrassing as it is now, either.

Definitely the best EnglandNewOrder song. I actually genuinely love it. Words, piano, surging keyboards during the fade-out, the rap. Funnily enough, the last time I was majorly into football was Italia '90.

Yup. If there was a trophy for just qualifying you guys would be laughing.

And if there was a trophy for qualifying, actually believing that you've got a cat's chance of winning it and then being shown up as the third-rate footballing nation you are by getting f**ed out in the Quarter Finals (again) you guys would have been given the trophy to keep by now.

I like it, however i do prefer Three Lions....

I seem to recall you fretting last year that the Liverpool Summer Pops gig was the night before the World Cup Final and speculating about how difficult transport home would be the next day if Eng-ger-land made it.
