i'm sure this has been posted a thousand times. there's no search thing to find an old thread so...I was watching that video i had posted in a thread for everything's gone green, live in nyc in 1981 with bernard playing Ian's guitar.or so i think it was ian's guitar.
does anyone know if one of the band members has it or what happened to it? just curiious to know.i wonder if bernard ever plays it or if its even playable still.
It's a Vox, can't remember the model, but it has a shitload of effects and stuff onboard. Mate of a mate used to have one, and could do a very good seagul impression with it so I'm told. Think it still exists (must not have got nicked with all their other gear) as it's seen in 24hpp.

Ian's one was a copy. Not a Vox phantom.Too espensive, i guess. Vox guitars are now very hard to find. U can only find vintage ones. The Phantom appeared in the sixties . Brian Jones used to play one in 1965.

of course cause as i said it was a copy by Eastwood.Today's price for a firsthand (neuve) (new )is around 400 $ or 400€ or 240 pounds. Ian's Eastwood was maybe a secondhand guitar?
Ian did not have an Eastwood copy (did such things even exist back then?). It was a genuine Vox Phantom with onboard effects (something no copyist has ever tried to replicate).
There was an article about the instruments used in "24 Hour Party People" but the movie website is full of broken links now. Luckily it was archived by Wayback Machine.
The bit about Ian's guitar:
It's one of six that we knew survived five years ago - four of which have disappeared. The only one that we knew existed was the one that Ian had. It's a Vox Phantom 6, and it's an extremely rare piece of kit. Not particularly expensive guitar in its day, actually quite revolutionary because it was active, had on board power supplies and things. But to recreate Joy Division, it was almost essential to try either to recreate one or find the original. That took a lot of tracking down.I phoned New Order's management. They spoke to Barney [Sumner] - he had the guitar. He was a bit freaked out, as he put it, because various people had been phoning him saying 'There's this guy trying to get hold of Ian's guitar", through the grapevine. It was the day before we were due to use it, and I'd sent for one from London, but it wasn't a good match - it was red, it was a Teardrop. I got a phone call saying "If you go round to Bernard's house you can pick up the guitar. And if you go on from there to Steve's house, he's got Hooky's bass." So I spent a wet Friday driving round Macclesfield picking these guitars up. And it was just fantastic. And we got it, opened the case and there is was - Ian's guitar.It was the most valuable item we borrowed because, as Bernard said, it's priceless. You couldn't put a price on it.
thx.i'd like to get a custom made guitar one day..particularly in lilac...a bass guitar...i doubt warwick would make such one...but esp and yamaha, i like...
Didn't Ians guitar cause an INCREDIBLE amount of feedback that actually ruined a few bootlegs of the band?
Still, it's a guitar that fit his personality well, being a coffin n all.
Does anyone know if the actual Phantom Copy that Ian had is the one that the actor playing him in 24 Hour Party People used? =]
Ian's Phantom was used in 24HPP - as at least one other poster here has remarked it isn't a copy...look carefully and you'll see both 'VOX' and 'Phantom VI' written on it. Another genuine Phantom VI was sold on eBay a year or so ago for a fairly large sum and Sterling Morrison used a white Phantom which given Ian's love of the Velvet Underground is probably where he got the idea from...
There's a Vox Phantom organ guitar currently in Music Ground in Manchester. No doubt for a frightening amount of money (didn't bother asking).
Also there are some Alden Vox copies there for only £199, they look ok considering the price.
The original Vox guitars are supposed to be fairly poor instruments in terms of both sound and build quality.
I believe KORG bought the rights to VOX in the late 1990's and made a series of reissues. These are supposed to be far superior to the 1960's guitars in much the same way that the Japanese and Chinese Gretsch guitars are better made and sounding instruments than the actual 1960's Gretsch guitars.
There's also a company called Phantom Guitar Works that bought the VOX name and I believe currently make licensed copies. You can get a teardrop guitar I believe for about $500-$600 USD with all the VOX trades, etc. I almost picked one up a couple of years ago on Craig's list but I didn't have the cash at the time.
These Phantomworks guitars are apparently okay for the money but not as good as the KORG Vox reissues...
as i posted in another thread not so long ago, the guy that does the phantom's is in fact the guy who designed the origional, he makes and services all of will sergents teardrops and made a teardrop bass for steve brannan( bass player for echo and the bunnymen ans david potts), ste says its useless for playing live cos it feeds back and sounds thin(probably cos he would have to eq all the bass out to control the feed back), but he says its top for recording on.
