Always thought it was a case of the telegram being sent in error, and Barney/soldier going home to find his wife distraught at the news... Happy ending... 
Although have also heard thoughts that he was actually killed and travlled home as a ghost? No need to over-analyse - my fave NO tune...

I always thought it was the "in error" thing. However there is also the "romeo and juliet" twist, that the wife, believing Barney's soldier to be toast, tops herself just in time for him to find her body on his safe return.

Actually I believe that she was banging his first mate, and she sank to the ground with the premade telegram, because he came home early. It was theatrics that gave his first mate just enough time to sneak out the bedroom window naked, with his clothes balled around his shoes strategically placed so not to offend the neighbors.

That does make perfect sense, lyrics are close to Vietnam, and they did cover this song. Vietnam however is definately an antiwar song, but I don't think I get that from Love Vigilantes.....could be I'm just hearing what I want to hear or Barney isn't that great at lyrics?

Agreed but its a very over-rated song. I know- it's just me! Everyone else on here seems to love it... I'll walk the lonely road...

In the military "leave" means time off, vaction time.
But I know what you mean. I think there is the double meaning on purpose, so it can be left open ended. Makes the song more fun that way, and allows for it to be argued upon on at fan websites.:D
