Steve & Gillian

I was thinking about Steve & Gillian and how amazing it is that they have stayed together whilst maintaining a working relationship by being in the same band. I think this is quite an achievement as there must have been temptations, tensions, and fall outs along the way.

When I think of the relationships in other bands (ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, No Doubt, Smashing Pumpkins, Catatonia) they have always ended, or the band have lost the members. I cant think of any other band which has enjoyed such a harmonous relations as S&G, which to me makes New Order unique.

Now I now that Gillian hasnt been in NO for about 8 years (or something), and posters are bound to reel a list of bands which have had the same common factor but it cant be ignored that S&G are legends. Even more so as they must have had to put up with more that their fair share of tantrums from the more wayward and egotistic Barney and Hooky.

I wonder if they had broken up, what impact this would have had on the dynamics of the band and ultimately if the band would have been forced to disband.

So I salute the best couple in the music business.

It is quite amazing. I was sort of expecting at one point or another for Steve and Gillian to split up while checking up on the bands history, but was pleased to see they didn't.

I agree with you 110% on that. [Which goes to show that, yeah. I may be the resident Steve's Angel on NOOL, but I still think Steve and Gillian are the cutest couple to ever walk the earth.]

Back in January, after I joined and whatnot, for Gillian's Birthday I put together a sweet little collage celebrating the adorable couple...

They are indeed a lovely couple. Its amazing that they stayed together. Steve was quite handsome back in the old days (well, he still is quite handsome today) and I am sure there were groupies on the early NO tours.

Steve must really love Gillian, and vice versa.

In addition, both Steve and Gillian are incredible musicians. I get really angry when people done remember the great contribution that Gillian made to the NO sound.

All those great synth melodies.....Barney didnt write them for Gillian to play you know....

All those great synth lines and melodies in songs like True Faith.....thats all Gillian. She was a pretty good guitarist as well. Witness her lead guitar on Dream Attack and her rhythm guitar on Everyone Everywhere and State of the Nation.

And yes...I know that Barney writes a lot of the synth parts and songs in general....but Gillian still added a lot of her own stuff. Plus, she always looked gorgeous and classy while playing on stage.

Gillian is awesome and NO hasn't been the same without her. Especially live.

Does anyone know if Gillian played on Get Ready or WFTSC at all? I mean....both album were recorded at her house, basically.....is it possible that she would have stopped in the studio and laid down some synth parts?

Not sure about played, but she DID have the backing vocals on one of my all-time favorite Order songs ever...

Was she? All the promo pics of NO for GRE that I saw only had Barney, Steve and Hooky in them, and most of the reviews said that the albumw as recorded as a three piece.

I have actually always wondered if she playe don GR or not......There are great synth parts on a few of those songs. I wonder who wrote and played the descending piano part in the middle of Crystal...

I'm sort of with Sunshine on this one. Whether it is or is not Gillian, I do not know, but it sure as fuck sounds more like her than Dawn.
