This whole postcode lottery is a disgrace. When my old man had his heart attack 3 years ago he had to get fitted with a defibulator to keep his ticker from going off at a weird rate.
A bloke he works beside needs the same thing but because it costs £20K to fit and maintain and he live sunder a different NHS Trust he can't get one. A disgrace. Especially when, as Wilson stated, there's funding available for so many cosmetic procedures these days.
Would it perhaps be an idea to get a donations function added to the homepage here for ol' Tone? I'd happily contribute a few quid to this instead of another bloody Community album!

Quite right.There are enough people on this board who i'm sure wouldn't mind chipping in a few quid.He has, after all had a hand in giving us some of the best music the world has ever heard over the past 30 years.
My stepdad is dying of cancer at the moment (I'm not being morbid, he has Myloma which is incurable) and watching Wilson on Newsnight the other night was wierd because you could see that the treatment and the illness has done the same to Wilson as it has to my stepdad; made them frail old men.
That being said, most of it is the treatment because it is so aggressive (especially when the cancer was as far advanced as Wilson's obviously was).
The smallest thing can make someone take a huge turn for the worse, but to be honest if you've got cancer then you are still top of the list for treatment in any NHS hospital, and I reckon this isn't the last chapter of the Wilson story. Just yet.
Knew a good friend of mine who beat cancer the first time. Second time around, however, she lost to it. But she never went down without a good strong fight, and even stronger faith. I know she's watchin' over Tony right now, I'm sure of it.
Same with my great-grandmother [RIP Ana-Julia '83]; cancer took her before I even came on this earth to know her. And as Melly said the first time Tony was fighting this:

I've just seen AW on North West Tonight and heard his story and just how shite the Manchester Primary Care Trust are when it comes to helping those most in need suffering from Kidney Cancer. Thankfully Tonys got some kind and wealthy pals prepared to fork out to pay for the drug, Sutent, that he requires to keep him going (touch wood) for the foreseeable but obviously there'll be folks in need who haven't got that. So what I've just thought of is this: A sponsored jog / saunter / drag of yer ass around somewhere like Heaton Park, Manchester with all those takin' part wearing a t-shirt of a band associated with Our Tone' down the years. Imagine a couple of thousand Happy Mondays, New Order, Vini Reilly, Smiths, Stockholm Monsters, The Other 2 etc t-shirts bombing about Heaton Park to raise some money and awareness for kidney cancer? It'd be top and pretty worthwhile. Few beers afterwards in The Woodthorpe? Oh yes. I've been in touch with the James Whale Kidney Cancer Fund to see what the bob moore is but if you'd like to register your interest in the mean time send me a message on here or leave a comment on me myspace or summat. There's something just wrong about a man like Wilson being threatened by such a sneaky thing as his own cells tryin to do him in. I'm glad I didn't see the reports, when my friend had a tumour at the back of his nose/mouth (which he beat ultimately), he looked a bit ill for a while, until they diagnosed it and treated it, then he looked FUCKED! He told me once "Cancer's a doddle, the treatment's a wanker".
Whatever I can do to help should be considered done, and I think I speak for all of us, even the ones who think he's a twat.

I didn't see Granada Reports but I read the early edition of the Manchester Evening News,and was shocked to learn that was our Tone stood next to Leonard Cohen. A bit upsetting to say the least,all the more to learn that the Solent drug might cut him about 11 months of slack. My prayers are with you mate.

There seems to be a fair few folk on here who would be happy to make a contribution, financially. I've always felt that giving because your asked isn't the best way to contribute to charity. Giving because it's something or someone you care about should be what it's all about. Is there anyone from the site who could stick a Paypal donate button up on the homepage?
It would be a nice gesture for the man but remember that at the end of the day a gesture is all it would be. I'm sure Mr W. would prefer it if folk actually got political and did something about the fucked up situation he finds himself in and the people who are ultimately responsible for it.

The very fact that there are such drugs at all is the result of a great deal of Government, private and charity money going into research. This country leads the world in cancer research, and many forms of cancer which were once a death sentence are now curable as a result of the hard work of British scientists. New treatments are becoming available that can prolong and improve the quality of life for people beyond anything that could previously be imagined.
Sadly, this all comes at a massive financial cost, and there is not a limitless supply of cash. It is the job of the people that run the NHS to decide where to allocate resources and they are always going to receive critisism from those who feel that they're not getting enough of the pie.
Another inevitable conclusion of the improvement in diagnosis and treatment of illness is that people live longer. This means that the available resources are spread over a larger, older population.
It's a complete fucker that the NHS can't step in and cure everything that's wrong with them, especially when it's someone that we feel is important to us. But, as GlasVegas says, we need a more informed and intelegent debate than just pointing the finger around at the authority figures.
To accuse the NHS and the UK Government of lacking in effort in the detection and treatment of cancer is frankly insulting to the people who have devoted their lives to this important field.
Do some reading and find out what you're talking about. Here's a good start...
Just so you know, I have lost several people who were close to me to cancer, and a member of my family works in the research field so I have seen this from both ends.
I recently went to a graduation ceremony at ICR and was really humbled at hearing at the work they do there. All of the graduands could earn far more money in other fields, but to a man (actually they were mostly women) they had all chosen to stay in cancer research in some way or other, using their skills to advance the cause.

To be honest, I thought that the general gripe in this thread wasn't about what the government has spent on the NHS; rather what it could be spending there if it wasn't too busy killing people in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Absolutely disgusting. Tony has basically had a major impact on Manchester - the music, the culture, and the way the city has evolved into a very 'trendy' (awful word, I know) place. Therefore bringing in a LOT of money from outside Manchester, into Manchester.
Yet they won't fund a drug which 'costs' £3500 a month (it doesn't ACTUALLY cost that much, it's just thats the price the pharmacy company CHARGES for it).
An insult to the great man - as he has had SO much influence into how Manchester has evolved. I wish him the best of health, and thank him for what he has done and how he has (perhaps indirectly) changed our lives.

I'm a bit dissapointed that despite numerous people in this thread saying they would like to contribute to the fund which has been set up that nobody from the site has got round to setting up a simple Paypal donate feature on the homepage.
It would be a far more worthy gesture than presenting Hooky with a CD of dodgy New Order cover versions.
