Hi. I am a massive New Order fan, but despite liking Love Will Tear Us Apart and Atmosphere, I've never heard much Joy Division stuff, and wasn't really blown away by Transmission as done by NO on the recent shows.
Which album would you recommend getting first, that showcases JD at their best? There seem to be a lot of compilations out there.

There are two albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer, both are very essential. Neither contain singles.
Substance is a singles collection. Very uneven but contains the great singles.
Still is very uneven collection but has a few excellent songs. Not a first buy.
No easy answer here. If you just like the pop stuff you may find the albums too dark
Heart and Soul is expensive but has everything, and is a great box set. If you buy one this is the one.
if you're just buying one, you might try Permanent. Otherwise, invest in Heart and Soul. you won't be disappointed.
Get CLOSER - you'll either get into it or not. It combines darker sides of Unknown Pleasures with newer sharper sonic lansdcape that is distantly similar to that of early New Order.
Permanent helped me get more into Joy Division, and helped buffer the difference between NO and JD....pathetic I know, but I personally really liked this album as a starter......don't suggest Substance first, as this album really put me off JD for many years....until permanent came out....
If you're a new fan not wanting to spend too much money then get Permanent 1995:
It's by no means a perfect compilation but is remastered and does contain all the singles plus choice tracks from the albums. It'll definitely give you a good enough idea of what JD were about so you can decide whether or not to splash out on the albums or Heart and soul.
A highlight of Permanent is the 'faster' Pennine version of LWTUA (track 1) with some fans - myself included - finding it superior to the 'slower' original 12".
If you don't find JD your cup of tea from Permanent then you haven't wasted more than $10. Personally, it did the trick getting my NO/JD obsession started over a decade ago.

Permanent is probably better than Substance for a good overview... I just dislike the random sampling of tracks from the albums. Closer and Unknown Pleasures are so good they deserve to heard as is.
Personally ,Still is my favorite because of the sounds of it and the fuckups and last concert on it..but I would get all the joy division cd's.even though you may have duplicates of alot of the songs in the end.
The main Joy Division albums are about to be released in remastered versions. These versions, it has been suggested by Hooky, have vastly improved sound quality and bonus material. If I was you I would hang onto to get these releases (September 2007 release date in the UK).
To be honest, even if you are only slightly interested in Joy Division, you really need both to get both Unknown Pleasures and Closer (2 of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion).
Buy all Joy Division CDs/LPs just for cover art's sake only. It's worth it, even if you won't like the music.
For the compilation albums, it's a toss coin between Substance 1977 - 1980 and Permanent. But maybe I'll give a point higher to Substance 1977 - 1980.

My favorite track of NYPC is Get Dancey from the Get Lucky Single. Its not in the Fantastic Playroom album.

Thanks a lot to everyone for the replies! Permanent will probably be the choice if I can find it reasonably priced. And will wait 'til autumn for the remastered studio LPs if I am to get those.

That's roughly how I done it I got Heart & Soul in 2001 and then gradually added the other studio albums and compilations in time. If you're more of a NO than JD fan - like I was before getting into more of the JD material, I'd say go for it and give it a chance as let's say the links between JD and NO aren't really that great and you won't be disappointed.
